Digging through the stacks: Precious Bryant
When we first started working for Music Maker, Aaron would play the CD "My Name is Precious" by Precious Bryant non-stop. One of his favorite tracks is Don't Jump My Pony - he sings it all the time. The tune is indicative of the Chitlin' Circuit, a string of performance venues throughout the eastern and southern United States that were safe and acceptable for African-American performers during segregation. The song is originally written by famous Chitlin' Circuit performer Denise LaSalle.
Don't Jump My Pony was recorded at Precious' trailer in Waverly Hall, G.A., and her son Tony can be heard playing bass. That trailer has unfortunately become dilapidated and unsafe, and as we listen to her music in the office we are reminded of our efforts to obtain a second-hand trailer for Precious to continue living in comfort. Music Maker assists artists like Precious with emergency needs, so they can continue to focus on the creation of music like Don't Jump My Pony.
Enjoy!

Support the music, Feed An Artist
Feed An Artist today! When an artist is forced to choose between food and needed medications, they are unable to concentrate on sharing their talents with the world. American musical traditions will only survive if artists can continue to make music and share it with future generations. Artists like J.C. McCool, who inspired the Feed An Artist program 17 years ago, need our support to focus on their music.
Before meeting Tim in 1981 in Black Mountain, N.C., J.C. McCool wrote the ubiquitous popular fiddle tune Black Mountain Rag, and performed for many years with the Blueridge Mountain Entertainers. After a long fiddle career, J.C. hasn't been able to play in several years due to his advanced arthritis. One of the first artists to receive Feed An Artist grants, J.C. still lives in relative comfort because of supporters like you.
Please consider supporting the Feed An Artist program - your $25 monthly or $300 one-time donation will ensure Music Maker's partner artists can continue to focus on their art in the new year. Donate today! |
