Summer 2012, Music Maker had four great interns helping with the daily operations in the office.

Jeremy Johnston, a rising Junior at Hampshire College, is a Film and Video major and worked primarily on the audio archive at the Music Maker office.

Mike Capodiferro, also a rising Junior at Hampshire College, is studying Dramatic Writing, and worked on writing projects such as press releases and a short story on the life of a Music Maker artist.

Maggie Morrissey, a recent graduate of UNC in Public Policy, will be attending NC State in the Fall for a Master's in Public Administration. She helped coordinate Music Maker artists' involvement in the JFA's Jazz in the Schools and designed the new Henry Byrd CD.

Matt Dailey, a second year Masters student at UNC Chapel Hill in Library Science and returning MMRF intern worked on the audio archive, while using Music Maker's archive as a case study for his Master's thesis.

Thanks for all your help and good luck to you all!

L.C. Ulmer joins MM Lineup for Southern Mississippi Roots Festival

LC Ulmer

L.C. Ulmer is a blues player who hails from Jones County, Mississippi. He was born in 1928 in Stringer, and has played guitar since he was nine years old. This isn't surprising when you consider how much music was happening in his household. Nearly everyone in his family played some sort of instrument, and considering that L.C. had six brothers and seven sisters, that's a lot of musicians under one roof!

Throughout the 1950s and 60s, L.C. traveled, performed, and ended up playing with legendary musicians such as Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, and Louis Armstrong. In 2001 LC returned to Mississippi, and will join the Music Maker Stage at the Southern Mississippi Roots Festival on October 13th in Hattiesburg, MS. Tickets for that event are free - stay tuned at musicmaker.org for more information on that festival!

Diggin': "Hold On to Your Hiney"

Albert White

It is Wednesday morning, and I've just brewed a pot of coffee for the office. I put on Albert White's solo album,
The Soul of the Blues. Albert has played with the greats: Ray Charles, Ben E. King, Joe Tex. He's good. He's really good.

The first track, "Hold On to Your Hiney" throws me: I've been misplaced. The song's opening snare screams, "Hello!" and the ensuing groove of bass swings me out and up into an amusement park of funk.

Recorded in 2006 with Ardie Dean and with an incredible backup band including Steve Cropper, Elvin Bishop, Dave Keyes, Bill Rich, and Kester Smith, this song bounces. I picture a roller-coaster in free fall, or my dad dancing around in his underwear (maybe just Tom Cruise.) When the song ends, I am rushed back into the office, feeling as though I've been visited by a blues phantom.

Check it out and see what you think!
