The
Kirby Sewell Band is a high energy, soul slinging R&B band, with a
modern twist. Known for their passionate live performances, of what they call
Alternative Blues, the monster five-piece posse is a force to be wreckened with.
They create melodic heart pulling stories from the depths of an old soul, while
breathing new musical life into the genre. Their arrangements are amped up,
invigorating, thought provoking, and playing against the grain.
2012 marked the
release of their 2nd CD, Bought Myself A Hammer. Instead of going for a
sound, the band describes it as an 'iPod of the Blues'. The album is diverse and
pays homage to traditional
Blues and its influence on North American popular music.
The band is
fronted by award winning vocalist Kirby Sewell. Praised as "one of the
finest Male Blues vocalists in Canada" by Real Blues Magazine, Kirby's presence
on stage is unforgettable. His ability to connect with the nuances of his own
life and share them in unforgettable vocal performances, leaves audiences with
no doubt that the Blues has spent time with him.
“The physically
imposing, honey-voiced frontman, delivers effortless authenticity and
sincerity,” says FFWD weekly’s Gerry Krochak about the big Blues shouter’s
performances.
Mike Bell of the
Calgary Herald writes “Sewell’s powerful vocals and unflinching frontman
presence are magic.”
This magic all
started in at the bands first performance in May of 2009 at the Calgary Lilac
Festival. Since then, the boys have been sharing their take on Blues with
audiences across North America. Their energy has spread through countless sold
out performances at top regional venues like The Ironwood, Cantos/National Music
Centre of Canada, the Skookum Barndance series, and Edmonton’s Festival
Place.
While on their
first Pacific Northwest tour in 2011, the band was invited to perform at the
San Jose Jazz Festival, and at San Francisco’s Biscuit &
Blues. The year also included an impressive list of regional festivals &
concerts where they opened for the likes of Eric Lindell, Trombone Shorty, Edgar
Winter, Bedouin Soundclash, Coco Montoya, Monkey Junk and Savoy
Brown.
In 2012, the
boys opened for Blue Rodeo to celebrate the 100th Annual Calgary
Stampede, then headed off to Salmon Arm Roots
& Blues Festival where they headlined the CBC Blues stage. The
rest of the summer was jam packed with sold out club gigs and performances at
the Kaslo Jazz Festival and MT Baker R&B Festival.
