Born With The Blues John D’Amato was born with the blues. That’s right! John was born blue due to a congenital heart defect that reduced the amount of oxygen in his blood stream. He returned to his natural color and was released to from the hospital several days later. At that point in time there was no way to correct the defect and the doctors advised his parents that his life span would be limited. This led John down a different path than most children. A path of endless doctor visits, medical tests, lonely hospital stays and painful medical procedures. All of them necessary to determine if they could save John’s life. Fortunately through the Grace of God and a doctor at Yale University a surgical procedure was developed that saved John’s life. Building His Blues Style An excerpt from Mark S. Tucker’s (F.A.M.E. Magazine) review of John’s debut CD “Ain’t No Big Deal” sums up John’s style best. “Inventive and original yet true to the genre. His instrumental voice is completely original. I mean, the speed is Alvin Lee (crowned the fastest guitarist in blues history), the bent is Stevie Ray Vaughn, the Chicago dirty white boy voicing is Kim Simmonds but the notes are all his. Tell me the last time you heard that.” With the myriad of guitarists in today’s blues genre imitating artists like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and many others, John is a fresh new voice on the scene. John’s style draws its influence from some of the greatest guitarists of our time. Artists like B.B. King, Roy Buchanan, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Dickey Betts, Chet Atkins. All these guitarists have had a tremendous influence on John’s playing. John started playing guitar at age 10. At 15 was the first contemporary blues guitarist accepted into The Educational Center for The Arts. There John honed his blues craft as well as developing into a well seasoned guitarist capable of expertly performing any genre of music. John quickly became one of the most in demand guitarists on the local music scene in his hometown of New Haven, Connecticut. John frequently performed on the same bill as the not yet famous Michael Bolton, Christine Ohlman and G.E. Smith (Saturday Night Live’s Band Director and Hall and Oates’ guitar- ist). In 2001 John relocated to Nashville to pursue his production, songwriting and performing goals. John performed on many Nashville recording sessions but it wasn’t until he began regularly performing at the world famous “Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge” in Nashville, TN and received such a positive response to his blues music that he realized that was what he needed to be doing. What The People Say Here are some quotes that capture the essence of John’s live performances: “He just keeps spewing out wilder and wilder phrases until you succumb to giddy delight or vertigo.” Guitar Player Magazine;” John D’Amato and Eric Gales, amazing blues playing .” Guitar Jam Daily; “John D'Amato can sing the Blues up a storm.” C.M. Jazz and Blues; “John D'Amato and his band knocked it out of the park. Rocking Greenwich Village with a blast of super- charged blues.” Jon Sobel Promoter, Soul of The Blues Festival. Latest News Since John D’Amato entered the blue scene in 2010 with the release of his debut CD “Ain’t No Big Deal” his guitar prowess and soulful vocals have landed him on stage with many notable musicians. Such as :B.B. King; Billy Cox; Eric Gales and Joe Louis Walker. Joe Louis Walker was so impressed with John’s abilities he asked John to perform with him on his new Alligator Records Release “HellFire” (released in January 2012), produced by Tom Hambridge (who has won Grammys for his work with Buddy Guy and B.B. King ) and is already being talked about as “The Best Blues CD Of 2012” . “Ain’t No Big Deal” John’s Debut CD “Ain’t No Big Deal” was released to radio on October 15th, 2010 and within three weeks has climbed onto the Roots Music Report National Blues Charts at #41. It also reached #9 on the Top 50 Blues Albums on Air Play Direct for September 2011. John is still receiving extensive national and international airplay.
