Bloodshot Records artist: Lydia Loveless - Somewhere Else - New Release Review

I just received the newest release (February 18, 2014), Somewhere Else, from Lydia Loveless. This new release is quite pleasing with a pop country style but more meat than you would expect from the genre. Opening with Really Wanna See You, an uptempo rocker, Loveless has a sweet "Stevie Nicks" like voice and the band is quite tight. Wine Lips, a slower but mid tempo track has strong radio potential waith just a pinch of country in the guitar riffs setting it apart. Chris Isaak is a real nice track and showcases Loveless' vocal style quite well. With just a tinge of retro styling this is one of the best tracks on the release. To Love Somebody has light airy feel sound and a clear hook. Another track that could easily garner strong airplay. Hurts So Bad has a Philly soul with pop country style but with distinctive Loveless touches making it one of the most memorable tracks on the release. Head has a British sound but style keeping with contemporary pop country feeling another very cool track. Verlaine Shot Rimbaud is a quiet acoustic ballad with edge. Picking up texture and emotion as it grows, this is another track which could easily hit the charts. Somewhere Else opens with a soft pedal steel part just dabbing at country styling but remaining in the pop arena. Loveless really has an attractive voice and is likely to attract many regular listeners with this kind of outing. Everything's Gone takes one more step into the country with a more introspective ballad. Not masking it's intentions, I think this is one of the stronger compositions on the release. They Don't Know, a track made popular in the US by Tracey Ullman keeps it's basic pop outline but with just a twist of country and Loveless' seductive vocal timbre. This release really doesn't venture far into the blues arena but it is an enjoyable release.
