Blind Pig Records artist:Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers - Emergency Situation - New Release review
I just received the newest release, Emergency Situation, from Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers and I think it may be their best yet! Opening with James Wee Willie Wayne's Neighbor, Neighbor, Piazza instantly has the joint rockin'! A great harp tune, Piazza steps up and blows the blues. Joined by Miss Honey on piano, Henry Carvajal on guitar, David Kida on drums, Norm Gonzoles on bass, Ron Dziubla on sax, and Jim Jedeikin on sax this track is genuinely exciting! Excellent! Title track, Emergency Situation, is a laid back swing track with cool solos on sax, guitar and harp. Amos Milburn's Milk And Water is an easy going R&B style track with smooth vocals setting the pat for things to come. Frankenbop is an off the hook harp and piano jam. Piazza and Miss Honey really cut loose on this track making it one of the most memorable jams on track this year! James Wee Willie Wayne's Bad Weather Blues is a down and dirty blues with a lot of horn polish. Carvajal really steps up on this track with jarring guitar riffs. A really throaty sax solo on this track is also hot! Big Walter Price's Gambling Woman is a cool shuffle track with Miss Honey coming more forward with nice piano work. Piazza and Dziubla trade riffs taking this one home. Sam Myers' Sleeping In The Ground is a definite trademark track with a strong lope and Piazza grinds out a a serious thick harp solo throughout. Very nice! James Lane's Tricky Woman has a cool Chicago swing sound and Piazza's harp tone is the best on the release. Miss Honey really gets the 88's rumbling on this one with a featured solo and Piazza brings it home with a sweet solo of his own. The Clock, a classic R&B track shows restraint with light instrumental highlights. Lee Dorsey's Ya Ya is led by Carvajal on vocal. With a 60's rock styling, this track has some interesting guitar and horn work. Colored Salt is a perfect track to wrap the release coming out of the gates with Piazza flaming on his harp. A cool boogie with a lot of harp, smoking sax solos and Honey cooking the keys all pushed by the bass and drums... what a way to end!
Excellent!

Rod's more recent releases have all been good. But this one has no weaknesses top to bottom... not an easy task across an 11 track release! Highly Recommended!!
