Earlier this summer Chris Johnson (owner of Bayport BBQ in the Twin Cities' suburb of Bayport, MN) resurrected his popular Deep Blues Festival for three glorious (sold-out) days of great music, Southern-style BBQ and camaraderie between musicians, fans and friends alike. Far from the corporate sterility of many larger modern music fests, Johnson's Deep Blues Fest instead successfully revived the communal spirit of late '60s and early '70s music gatherings, evoking the vibe of a large summer picnic with family, friends, good food and great music.

The 2012 Deep Blues Fest featured 26 bands from four countries & 16 states. Out of these acts there were seven phenomenal performances from the current Alive roster. Alive At The Deep Blues Fest is the document of these incendiary and unforgettable performances. All 13 tracks were mixed by famed Detroit producer/musician Jim Diamond, who managed to capture the loose and spontaneous feel of live albums produced in the Golden Age of rock'n'roll. Buffalo Killers and Radio Moscow turned in super heavy sets soaked in psychedelia and reverb, while Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires fiercely ripped through their show with a blistering set of songs steeped in Southern rock, R&B, soul, gospel and punk from their critically acclaimed debut LP There Is A Bomb In Gilead - an album that has been helping to define the sounds of The New South. Brian Olive and his backing band melded soulful R&B with technicolor garage-pop for their early daytime set, while the Welsh duo Henry's Funeral Shoe, Left Lane Cruiser and newcomers John The Conqueror perhaps kept closest to the Deep Blues curriculum with their respectively raunchy and heavily amplified modern interpretations of rural gutbucket Delta Blues.

Alive at the Deep Blues Fest will be released November 27th through Alive Naturalsound Records in the following formats: CD, Digital and Black Vinyl with mp3 download card & poster, as well as Limited Edition "BBQ SAUCE RED" Colored Vinyl exclusive to the Bomp mail-order.

Alive Natural sound label New Release :Where Is Parker Griggs - Compilation Showcase - Review

I have had the opportunity to review the new cd from thee Alive Naturalsound label entitled " Where Is Parker Griggs". This is a compilation of recordings by Alive Naturalsound recording artist, most of which are available only on this set. Included in the lineup is Radio Moscow,
Hacienda, Buffalo Killers, Henrys Funeral Shoe, Black Diamond Heavies, Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires, Brian Olive, Gardens, White Noise Sound, Left Land Cruiser and The Bloody Hollies. Now you can imagine in any compilation of songs by diverse artists that there will be songs that you like more than others just due to the song types/styles and your own personal taste. This entire compilation is very well composed and flows very nicely. Radio Moscow who has two songs on this compilation come on strong with mind expanding overtones and eerie swamp sounds, Hacienda who also have two songs, both which are exclusive to this release are more directed to the general listening audience and airplay. Buffalo Killers, also featured 2 exclusive to this release tracks which I found enjoyable and in the nature of early Joe Walsh. Henrys Funeral Shoe has one song which is exclusive to this release and has a soul side laid down over a nice slide groove and harmonica. Lee Bains III a debut song that is exclusive to this release and Brian Olive seem well suited to airplay. Gardens drum up a sound that was primitive and endearing like the Ramones or the Donnas... only their sound. White Noise Sound was actually one of my favorite tracks on the release with a song called There Is No Tomorrow. It shows originality and interest to go where few others venture...but then I like different stuff! Left Lane Cruiser with one track was pretty straight forward rock music with a lot of slide. The Bloody Hollies delivered the bluesiest tune on the recording with Dirty S'x. Overall a very interesting listen!

This compilation showcases the many facets of this respected L.A. based indie imprint, founded by Patrick Boissel 17 years ago. From garage rock, psych, punk, deep blues and Tejas garage-soul, Where Is Parker Griggs? is an impressive overview of some of the new blood currently pumping through Alive - the first label to have the taste and insight to sign not only The Black Keys and Two Gallants, but all of the remarkable acts on this collection (not to mention many others). This album also features an early preview from Alive's latest signing, the rootsy psyouthern soul of Birmingham, AL rock quartet LEE BAINS III & THE GLORY FIRES, whose full-length debut lands April 2012. 
Where Is Parker Griggs? will be released January 10th as a 180 GRAM VINYL Ltd. Edition and Digital download, the latter which also features two additional bonus tracks from LEFT LANE CRUISER and THE BLOODY HOLLIES.

So where exactly is Radio Moscow's singer, guitarist and creative fountainhead, Parker Griggs? Actually, we don't have a clue. But we do know that in January he'll be out on the road fronting Radio Moscow for a handful of explosive Midwest shows in support of their latest Alive album, THE GREAT ESCAPE OF LESLIE MAGNAFUZZ. The northern California (by way of central Iowa) trio will then be teaming up with Swedish hard-rockers GRAVEYARD for a coast-to-coast winter tour. You can pin Parker down in one of the cities below as part of this super-heavy, mind-bending double bill!
