Blue Rock Records artist: Dennis Jones - Soft Hard & Loud - New release review

 

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Soft Hard & Loud, from Dennis Jones and it's a cool blues rocker. Opening with Revolves Around You, with it's reggae/funky beat fueled by Cornelius Mims on bass, Raymond Johnson on drums and the vocal and guitar lead of Dennis Jones. His melodic, yet fiery lead work works nicely with this radio focused track. Cool opener. I Love The Blues is a solid blues ballad with Bennett Paysinger on B3 and along with Jones' warm vocals some real tasty guitar work. With a lot of fire, Front Door Man has a driving SRV like vamp. Layered lead guitar work by Jones really sets up this blues rocker nicely. Another track with a strong shot of radio appeal is funky blues rocker, Gonna be Alright. Fluid lead guitar soloing and a cool melody really sets this track apart. The anchor on this release and my favorite is slow blues, I'm Not, with it's T-Bone Walker structure and with Jason Freeman on B3. Jones really takes his guitar for a nice run on this one with heavy bending and strong blues phrasing. Clocking on at over 5 minutes, this track is hot. Wrapping the release is high energy rocker, Burn The Plantation Down. Jones has put together a nice release here with plenty of guitar to fill your ear.

Blue Rock Records artist: Dennis Jones Band - WE3 Live - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, WE3 Live from the Dennis Jones Band and it's a solid blues rocker. Opening with funky blues track, Blue Over You, Dennis Jones on lead vocal and guitar is backed by Sam Correa on bass and Raymond Johnson on drums. Tight and funky with some really tasty bass work and Jones' slashing guitar style, this is a solid opener. Hot stepper, Hot Sauce, has a really snappy drum line with a driving bass line giving Jones the opportunity to play some country styled blues riffs. One of my favorite tracks on the release is Don't Worry About Me with an aggressive bass line and flowing blues guitar soloing by Jones giving the track real bite. Boogie track, Super Deluxe has a real nice flow with components of Texas blues and jazz mixed equally giving it a foot stomping, guitar gripping edge. Very nice. Funky blues rocker, Enjoy The Ride, has a great bottom giving Jones a great platform for his assertive rhythm playing and compelling soloing. Very cool. Wild card track, Kill The Pain shows a lot of Jimi influence with vocal and guitar inflection over a droning bass line. Some of Jones' most choice guitar riffs come out on this track making it another of my favorites. You can feel the tension building as this live show goes on with Big Black Cat and it's powerful drive. Really digging into his bag of tricks over tom tom heavy drum work, Jones is lighting it up on Devil's Nightmare. Shuffle track, I'm Good has great flow with a tight rhythm, solid vocals and crisp guitar riffs. Wrapping the release is Albert King's Born Under A Bad Sign, with Jones pulling out the stops. His Hendrix influence is heavy but not dominant and he really shines. This is a super closer for a solid blues rocker.

Blue Rock Records artist: Dennis Jones - Both Sides Of The Track - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Both Sides Of The Track, by Dennis Jones and it really is heavy! Opening with upbeat rocker, Enjoy The Ride, Jones, on lead vocal and guitar is joined by Dale Black on bass and Raymond Johnson on drums. Jimmy Z Zavala cuts loose with a ripping hot sax solo on this track leading up to Jones' guitar solo, giving it extra bite. Very cool opener! It All Depends has a very warm guitar sound and a lumbering swagger with solid bass work from Black. Jones' on guitar work has a really nice kick and his tone is round and pure. Very nice! Cranked back a few notches, Better Than Him, has an easy, jazzy feel with arpegiated guitar riffs and plucky bass lines. Nobody's Slave features Michael Turner on drums and Samuel Correa on bass. Their aggressive style seem to drive Jones to a different depth of rock. Blues screamer, Mr. Right, really sits in the groove with wide open roads for Jones to thrown super riff and another. Very cool! The Machine has a real modern Hendrix feel with "the sound". Black and Johnson have the feel perfect and Jones' vocals and guitar work are clean and classic. This doesn't sound like someone playing Jimi Hendrix. It sounds like something The Experience would have played. Excellent! Shuffle track, Number Two, is light and springy with cool, jazz rock guitar riffs and solid vocals. Skin and Bones has an almost "Watchtower" feel with a powerful bottom and a Spanish style guitar bridge. Very cool! When You're Not Around is a bluesy ballad with nice vocals, rich guitar work and warm B3 work from Teddy Zigzag. Sweet! What has a light acoustic feel with a nice blend of vocal, acoustic guitar and harp. Shines On You has a real cool feel with a lazy swing and real nice guitar work over a nicely worked bass line. Very cool! I Can't Stop breaks loose with a serious rock feel. With a light funky infusion, this track has a radio style melody and Johnson plays some of his hottest drum riffs. Jones really lights it up on guitar laying down some serious smoke! Wrapping the release is Lonely Joint, an easy going acoustic track on acoustic guitar with vocal. A clever little track and a little fun as a closer.
