Celso Salim Band - Mama's Hometown - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Mama's Hometown, by Celso Salim Band and it's cool, soulful blues. Opening with Mad Dog, a super track with a cool New Orleans style rhythm and nice "Allmanesque" slide work by Salim to support Rafael Cury on lead vocal. Great opener. Chicago styling plays up on Locked Out In Misery featuring Darryl Carriere on harp and backed by Mike Hoghtower on bass and Lynn Coulter on drums has nice articulate guitar riffs throughout by Salim. Up tempo boogie rocker, Let It Burn, has a really nice feel, with Dave Fraiser on keys and solid slide playing by Salim and cool vocals by Salim, Cury, Fraiser, Hightower and Coulter. Blues ballad, No Need To Be Alone has a strong melody and vocal making it a strong radio contender and fine guitar work giving it real strength with the blues crowd. Very nice. Title track, Mama's Hometown, has a slinky feel and nicely blended vocal melodies, floating on an easy bottom with the soft feel of dobro slide. Very nice. Salim closes the release with traditional blues, In My Time of Dying, featuring his dobro and vocal. This is a really nice release with a lot of texture.

Brazilian Blues Guitarist Celso Salim to Release New CD Sept 28th

BRAZILIAN BLUES ARTIST CELSO SALIM

TO RELEASE NEW CD ON SEPTEMBER 28TH

Mama’s Hometown is a magical, musical place where everyone is welcome! Blues Music

The Celso Salim Band presents a new sound rooted in the blues past, crossing genre boundaries while creating something that is original and compelling. Their music takes on many styles mixing deep blues with hints of soul, country, jazz and rock.

Brazilian guitarist Celso Salim had his first contact with the guitar when he was six years old. At the age of 12 the talented young musician started to listen to his first Blues records, which changed his life forever. Since then Celso knew what he wanted to be, a Blues guitarist. For years he studied guitar hours each day, learning from old records by artists such as Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Freddie King, BB King, and Johnny Winter. A little later he began listening to 60’s & 70’s artists like the Allman Brothers Band, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. At age 17, Celso moved to the US for the first time, spending 3 years studying music and performing live shows. During this period he was exposed to other genres like Soul, Jazz, Folk and Country. This time would later have great influence on Celso’s music.

In Brazil, Celso has built a solid fan base, releasing 5 solo albums since 2001 and is considered to be one of the best guitarists in the country. He has also toured and recorded with prominent artists in the Brazilian Blues/Rock scene. Frequently featured among top Brazilian acts, Celso has performed at it's biggest festivals and venues. He has toured Europe and opened for legendary artist B. B. King as well as Deep Purple and John Hammond. He has also toured with bluesman Larry McCray and performed with blues legends Magic Slim and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith (Muddy Waters drummer).

Celso re-located to Los Angeles in 2014 becoming one of the busiest and most respected guitarists in Southern California. The Celso Salim Band has won the Southern California Blues Society Battle of the Bands twice (2015 & 2017) and were semi-finalists at the International Blues Challenge 2018 in Memphis, TN.They have also opened for renowned artists Canned Heat, Kim Wilson and Larry McCray, performing at large venues all over Southern California.

The Celso Salim Band has won five Independent Music Awards in these categories: Blues Song (2008), Blues Album (2015), Jazz with vocals Song (2015), Funk/Fusion/Jam Song (2017) and R&B/Soul song (2018). Their last album, To The End Of Time (2014), received great reviews from major publications in the U.S. and around the world such as Blues Matters! (UK), Blues Blast Magazine (USA), Blues Time (Italy) and Jefferson Blues Magazine (Sweeden).

The band features Brazilian singer Rafael Cury on lead vocals. Mike Hightower: bass/harmony vocals, Lynn Coulter: drums/harmony vocals, Max Butler: keyboards and Celso Salim: guitars/dobro/lead vocals.

Mama’s Hometown will be released on Wide Tracks Records on Sept 28,2018

Artur Menezes - Keep Pushing - New release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Keep Pushing, from Artur Menezes and it's quite good. Opening with radio track, Now's The Time, Artur Menezes delivers a smooth R&B track with warm horn saturation, highlighted by melodic BB King like guitar riffs. Nice opener. Title track, Keep Pushing, has a real nice feel with fluid guitar runs by Menezes, a solid bottom by Daniel Aged on bass, Gary Novak on drums, Carey Frank on keys and solid horn work by Jamelle Adisa on trumpet and Dan Bosley on sax. Come With Me is a lumbering blues rocker that really gives Menezes a great floor for his vocals and with a thick underbelly, his vibrant guitar riffs are smoking hot. Excellent track. Slow blues number, Any Day, Anytime has strong blues bones along the lines of a Freddie King number. Menezes keeps coming on stronger and stronger with his soulful vocals and crisp guitar work. his phrasing is intuitive and inspired. Excellent! Funky, Should Have Never Left has a strong balance of bass, drums and horns, underlaid by organ by Frank and Menezes' guitar playing is nothing short of super. Jump blues number, Love 'n' Roll gives Menezes a great opportunity to show his best "Gatemouth" Brown styling and again, he is tops. With trumpet punctuation by Adisa, this track rocks. Shuffle track, Give My Money Back has great pace and flow. Menezes gets in a really nice groove on this one and just rides. Very nice. Slowing way down for a soulful jazz ballad, Can't Get You Out Of My Mind, Menezes conjures up the sound of 50's jazz club with smooth vocals, muted trumpet of Adisa and his own lush guitar chords, breaking into George Benson like runs. Very nice. Wrapping the release is 'Til The Day I Die, shifting gears one more time to a contemporary rocker. Moving midsong to a heavy bottomed rocker, reinforced by Aged and Novak, Menezes shows that he understands how far blues roots extends and really kicks it with flashy heavy riffs. Excellent closer!

Shining Stone Records: Nuno Mindelis Featuring the Duke Robillard Band - Angels & Clowns - New Release Review

I just received a copy of the newest release from Nuno Mindelis, Angels & Clowns featuring the Duke Robillard Band and Sunny Crownover. Opening with It's All About Love, a blues laced pop track, Mindelis is nicely complimented vocally by Sunny Crownover. With simple blues riffs and a nice hook and melody, this is a track that could easily hit the airwaves hard. It's Only A Dream is a straight up rocker along the lines of a Glenn Frey track with a twist of Dire Straits. The title track, Angels & Clowns actually has the melodic sound of a Jimi Hendrix composition but as executed by Steve Winwood. Very interesting. Miss Louise has an easy going bluesy sound with a clever key solo and a well executed guitar solo as well. Hellhound has a funky jazz rhythm and some pretty strong guitar riffs laid down on a cleanly executed bed of drums (Mark Teixeira), keys (Bruce Bears) and bass(Brad Hallen). 27th Day is one of my favorite tracks having an unusual melody and instrumentation compliment. Mindelis plays clean melodic guitar runs to compliment  a really nice song. Perfect Blues has a familiar sound with riffs almost like Stevie Ray Vaughn turned inside out. Bears and Hallen really come on this track driving Mindelis into some really nice space. Instrumental Tom Plaisir features a really cool guitar lead melody. With only the simplistic of carrier notes from the band, Mindelis plays a really sweet track. On Blues In My Cabin, a standard 12 bar number, Mindelis sounds quite a bit like Clapton with smooth vocals and ringing guitar riffs. Happy Guy has a full on R&B style with a laid back JJ Cale feel. Country style picking is featured on this track showing the versatility of Mindelis' playing. Wrapping the release is instrumental jam Jazz Breakfast at Lakewest. it's a short break but demonstrates how tight thise guys can be when they want. Very cool.

Luiz Rocha

Hoochie Coochie Man - Blue Jeans & Vasco Faé

Vasco Fae bought his first harmonica in 1987, when he was 16, all by sudden. He started to dedicate himself to the instrument and with the diatonic harmonica and a velvet voice, has been achieving respect and attention from a great audience and harmonica players all over the country. On Brazilian television, Vasco has already showed up in some programs such as: Musikaos (Cultura), Bem Brasil (Cultura), Altas Horas (Globo), Fábio Jr. (Record) and Video Show (Globo). In 2007 he releases his second CD “Manoblues” preceded by “Saudacoes (2003)”. From 1992 until 2009 he has made over 1.550 shows in Brazilian Blues circuit.

Formed in 1993, “Irmandade do Blues” is his “home-band” and released the first CD of a Brazilian Blues quartet (Veneno) in 1996 by Eldorado Records, witch released the second CD (Good Feelings) in 2007 by Eldorado Records as well, and the DVD and CD “Ao Vivo (Live)” in 2009 by Universal Music. Irmandade do Blues has the same members since 1995 so that is the oldest formation in Brazil. From 2003 to 2005 he joined the band Blues Etilicos as one of the singers, harmonica players and composers where he recorded the CD “Cor do Universo”. Played with Kleber Albuquerque during 2001. In 2002 he joined the band Andreas Kisser and Brazil Rock Stars, where he still plays, sings and recorded the CDs “AKBRS – 50 years of rock” and “Hubris”, he also could share stage with Caetano Veloso, Herbert Viana, Lobao, Simone, Samuel Rosa, Dinho Ouro Preto, Frejat, Bocato, Pitty, Nando Reis, and others.

In Brazil Vasco Fae is considered as a great brazilian harmonica player and singer. “The Band man” as he was nicked by Jazz’n Blues magazine, is known as well by his notorious motor coordination technique of playing harmonica and guitar at the same time, and sometimes even with a bumbo – he’s the first one to seriously dedicate its self on developing this technique in Brazil – besides, Vasco Fae composes, sings, produces, plays almost every instrument he gets in his hands. He also plays with the band Triangulista that plays brazilian music, idealized in 1997 “Blueseiros do Brasil”, that already counts on two CDs released containing the best of Brazilian Blues musicians in jam sessions recorded in studio.

He also recorded many CDs with different artists, gave harmonica workshops at SESC net and showed up in the International Harmonica Meeting in Sao Paulo in 2003

Jiving - Cristiano Ferreira

Irmandade do Blues has the same members since 1995 so that is the oldest formation in Brazil.

Can´t Hold Out - Danny Vincent & Robson Fernandes

It´s impossible to separate Robson Fernandes from the contemporary Brazilian Blues scene. A man who possesses extraordinary tone and energy demonstrating a fantastic technical prowess. His style is at the same level of many of the great harp players outside of Brazil, and that is why many of these same great players bow to young Robson´s creative sound.

Robson Fernandes was born in 1976 in the city Sao Paulo - Brazil, he started playing Diatonic Harmonic at the age of 16, his passion aligned with the study of early 20th century North American Blues. He studied Harmony and Improvisation with the Jazz guitar player Lupa Santiago and the famous Trombonist - Bocato.

In 2002 he released the first Instrumental Blues Harp CD "Sampa Blues" Robson was surrounded by some of the best Blues and Jazz artist on his first outing.

On his second CD 2005 the "Gumbo Blues" marked a new cycle of intense emotions and daring beside his impeccable playing technique, he ventures out not only playing his harp but also doing all of the vocal workouts. This album stands, as an historic landmark for Brazilian harp players the first distributed in Europe and in the United States by Pacific Blues run by the record producer Jerry Hall. Robson Fernandes has participated in the principle Jazz and Blues Festival in Brazil.

After woodshedding with his band Victor Busquets drums, Renato Limao Bass and Danilo Simi on Guitar, Robson entered the studio in June/July 2008. A few month later the “COOL” CD is released. This album was recorded old school style on 24 tracks studer analog tape machines with everyone in the studio playing together thus giving it that distinct sound not found on many modern recordings. This outing by Robson F. was engineered and produced by co-writer Carlos sander from the U.S.

On this Cd Robson explores different styles and rhythms not just your usual 12 bar blues. While maintaining the spirit of Chicago, California and New Orleans. The Recording of “COOL” also had invited guests such as Californian saxophonist Troy Jennings, the incredible guitar work of Marcos Ottaviano and the subtle piano of Ari Borger. Once again Robson innovates by recording a string octet on the track “ I love You So” making in the first Brazilian Blues Record with strings.

Robson strikes again notoriety with his latest CD “COOL” not just here but globally. In November 2009 , RF played at the Blues Festival in the city of Ezquel in Argentina playing along side bluesman Danny Vincent. Next on the Festival circuit RF was invited to perform at the Blues Festival of Torun. After a (SRO) standing room only performance Robson and company played in the city of Warsaw both cities located in Poland. All of these shows were written up in great detail by the canadian publishers of “Real Blues Magazine” which awarded the “COOL” CD the number eight slot in it´s Top 100.
