I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Easy Eye Sound artist: Jimmy "Duck" Holmes - Cypress Grove - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Cypress Grove, from Jimmy "Duck" Holmes and it's a excellent slice or real delta blues. Opening with Skip James' Hard Times, Holmes is right there, front and center playing guitar and singing the blues just like God planned it. I mean it doesn't come much fresher than this. Get it while you can! Title track, another Skip James composition, Cypress Grove, has great feel and pace with Holmes joined by Eric Deaton on bass and Sam Bacco on drums and percussion. Don't be expecting a trap set... were talking basic...  Very nice! Muddy Waters' Rock Me has a super grinding bass line and with the addition of Marcus King on guitar and Dan Auerbach on lush slide, has strong texture. Another James track, Devil Got My Woman, is a super showcase for Holmes vocal styling and guitar work. I mean this track hurts it's so good. Excellent! All Night Long is really a short jam track which features so haunting slide work by Auerbach. Very cool. Jessie Mae Brooks' Train Train is a great track with a hill country sound. Pure vocal over just the basic of rhythm guitar and percussion, and then the addition of ghostly guitar work by Auerbach that really sets the track off. This is a track that shows a master working nicely with a master, not changing his style or "jazzing it up" like was so poorly completed with Hooker. It may have gotten him popularity, but it wasn't good. Wrapping the release is original track, Two Women, with it's simple, soulful wailing. Holmes is a treasure and fortunately, Auerbach has captured him in nature and put this perfect cd out. Super job!

I Got Mine

The blues are alive...and well... Live at Abbey Road

The Black Keys are an American blues-rock music duo consisting of vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer/producer Patrick Carney. The band was formed in Akron, Ohio, in 2001. As of October 2010, the band has sold over 1.7 million records.

The Black Keys are from Akron, Ohio. The band's two members are Dan Auerbach (guitar and lead vocals) and Patrick Carney (drummer). According to an interview on NPR's Fresh Air the name came from a schizophrenic artist, Alfred McMoore, the pair knew who would leave incoherent messages on their answering machines referring to their fathers as "black keys" such as "D flat" when he was upset with them.

The band released their debut album, The Big Come Up, in early 2002. The album was very successful for a new independent rock band. Along with their second album, it was recorded entirely in drummer Patrick Carney's basement on an 8-track tape recorder from the early 1980s. The album spawned two singles released as an extended play, "Leavin' Trunk" and "She Said, She Said". Both are cover songs; "Leavin' Trunk" is a traditional blues standard and "She Said, She Said" is originally by The Beatles. "I'll Be Your Man" would later be used as the theme for the HBO series Hung. "Breaks" was featured in the 2008 film RocknRolla'

Thickfreakness

It's almost impossible to improve on a 2 piece blues band. Raw , gritty and heartfelt... obviously the tv people think so...this band is on commercials and tv shows now. I hope they can maintain their raw energy.
