Eclecto Groove Records artist: My Own Holiday - Reason To Bleed - New Release Review

I just received the newest release (February 17, 2015), Reason To Bleed, from My Own Holiday and it's raggedly cool! This two piece band featuring Joey Chrisman on guitar and vocal and Nick Bartolo on drums opens with Hold On Me, a stripped country blues rocker. With a blues overtone and that just ready to break up to on guitar tone this track is a great start. Up next is Razorblades, another simple rocker with definite roots to the old blues via Ted Nugent, Ozzie, Jack White and the Keys. I especially like the simple full tube distortion guitar solo. Very cool. Two Coins has a really nice feel with all melody on Crisman's vocals, with guitar riffs and drums punching. Excellent! Memphis has a more folksy feel with straight chord strumming (mildly distorted) and drums. Devil In Me actually sounds like what I would think a band would sound like if Jack Bruce and Josh Homme put it together. Very cool! Reason To Bleed has a traditional blues drone note and straight simple rhythm. With rough and tumble drums, this is one of the most radio worthy with a particularly memorable melody and cool guitar solo. Whiskey In The Well is a quiet acoustic ballad which is very nicely written and soft compared to the wide open nature of most of the rest of the release. Nice contrast! On The Floor Blues is one of my favorite tracks with strong tie to early American blues rock like Mountain but with a much more simplified and less amplified sound. Excellent! Smile is a boogie track with distorted vocals and a simple boogie guitar rhythm. Again bringing on the obtuse loose guitar work sets the track apart. Stone Free has a much fuller rock sound sounding less like a 2 piece band and more polished. Single note guitar soloing has more a punk effect. Very cool! Stranded is a sensitive ballad with a straightforward melody. This is another track that could easily garner widespread radio play due to it's universal feel. Don't Shine On Me has a really cool R&B feel with a great groove. The simplicity of the instrumentation compared to the dynamics of the execution, and another loosely grinding full bodied guitar solo makes it another of my favorites on the release. Wrapping the release is Right Back Where I Started has a simple country ballad feel. Clean vocals and acoustic guitar accompaniment makes this a nice closer for the set. I think that this is an excellent release with guts and teeth. I saw one of the bands that they have been compared to on tv this weekend. This other band, who I really liked has added additional instruments and it took away nearly every drop of edge that they had and the polish was way to apparent. My Own Holiday is a new deal and if you like stripped down rock with a blues edge... this is it!

From Cream and Johnny Winter to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Gov't Mule these blues rock recipes are often boiled down to a simple trio. Such is the melting pot of influences and presentation of the Alastair Greene Band. Greene formed his first blues rock trio with former members of the legendary Southern California band The Pontiax in 1997. The Alastair Greene Band (AGB) has gone through several incarnations and line-ups over the years and had included alumni of the Steve Miller Band, Paul Butterfield Band, and Junior Wells Band. The AGB has also backed many blues artists in the studio and on stage, including Delta Groove recording artists Mitch Kashmar, Frank Goldwasser, as well as the incomparable James Harman. Currently, the line-up has solidified with Alastair Greene on guitar and vocals, Jim Rankin on bass and vocals, and Austin Beede on drums. Not only is Greene a blues rock guitar slinging and singing front man, but he has also served many years as a side man to some legendary musicians. Currently, Greene is the touring guitarist with Alan Parsons and has been touring internationally with the English pop/progressive rock veteran since 2010. After Greene played on Parsons' 2004 release A Valid Path, Alan was quoted as saying, "Alastair should be out playing guitar with the biggest bands in the world. I belive it's just a matter of time." Heady praise indeed coming from the man who engineered Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, served as second engineer on the last two albums by the Beatles, and has also sold millions of albums with his own Alan Parsons Project. When the guitar slot for Parsons' band opened in 2010, Greene got the call. Alastair has also appeared on albums by high profile artists such as drum legend Aynsely Dunbar as well as Toad the Wet Sprocket front man Glen Phillips. Alastair Greene has released four studio albums and one live record since 2002. His fifth studio recording will be the Eclecto Groove Records offering Trouble at Your Door. This is sure to be his most explosive recording thus far. The Alastair Greene Band combines a deep respect for traditional forms and themes, but adds a modern approach as an innate ability to shuffle with the best of them, while Jim Rankin's rock solid rhythm & blues and classic rock influences on both bass and vocals have been a welcomed addition to the band. "This is the happiest I've been musically in a long time," Greene said recently. "These guys are so much fun to play music with. I just received the newest release (June 17, 2014), Trouble At Your Door, from Alastair Greene Band and it ripps! Greene, well know as a session player and with a number of releases under his belt has really hit the screws on this one. Opening with People, a modern track with essential roots in the blues with drone noting sets a high bar for the rest of the release with hot slide work and a solid beat. On the title track, Trouble At Your Door, a Funk 49 like track, Greene gets things moving right. A funky blues rocker, Green had band mates Jim Rankin (bass), Austin Beede (drums) and Erik Norlander (organ) with him all the way as he lays down some really hot blues rock grooves. This is a great track and gives Greene a good basis to demonstrate his hot guitar skills. Boogie track, Back Where I Belong maintains an essential primitive blues root with a modern polish. Greene is vicious with his slide work and literally puts on a clinic on this release with crisp riffs and fresh phrasing. Red Wine Woman finds Greene on a steel bodied resonator playing delta style. His fluid riffs and clear sense of direction makes for a really cool track. First Born Son is back to full bore electric with a heavy bottom a southern kick. Using both slide and straight lead work on this track, Greene shows why he deserves to be mentioned in the list of top blues rock guitarists today. Love You So Bad is a quick paced blues rocker with just a hint of country. With twin guitar/vocal leads, this track is hot and Greene takes a nice opportunity to blow the doors off with every riff in his armament. Last Train Around The Sun has a cool Texas feel (Jesus Just Left Chicago) with a number of different twists and turns. Using full amp distortion guitar tones are creamy and full with lots of grind. Hot blues riffs blended with modern picking techniques really sets this track off. Excellent! Calling For You is a quiet, nicely constructed ballad backed primarily by Norlander on keys. With more of a David Gilmore like attack on guitar this is a really nice contrast to the balance of the release. Make The Devil's Day keeps in the blues vein but has more of the drive or Robin Trower or Chris Duarte. A cool blues rocker, this track should have a lot of commercial appeal. Greene never lets you down, always playing his guitar to the max without overcrowding. Very nice. Strange Feeling is a rocker with an easy attack. Building a lot of sting with guitar, bass and drums; and blending shredding techniques with blues overtones, Greene really controls the sound nicely. Pretty Price To Pay has a funky rock sound and Greene works his vocals nicely into the groove created by his trio of fine musicians. His fingers dancing lightly across the fretboard in a jazz like manner but with stinging results this is a really nice sound. Wrapping the track is The Sweetest Honey, a pure blues rocker with a solid rhythmic hook. Using a Chuck Berry rhythm as the base with Cream like guitar solos this is a hot track and a great way to conclude possibly Greene's effort yet!

Eclecto Groove Records artist: Shane Dwight - This House - New release Review

I just received the newest release (April 15, 2014), This House, from Shane Dwight and it really has it's own character and a bunch of charisma. Opening with the title track, This House, a R&B structured track done totally laid back and acoustic style... it's quite smooth featuring Bekka Bramlett on backing vocals and nice key work from Kevin McKendree. Next up is funky track, We Can Do This, which has more movement than anything I've heard of this style since Sneakin Sally Through the Alley (Robert Palmer and Little Feat).... super guitar work and I dare you to sit still! Fool drops into a ballad slot but thankfully missing the John Mayer hook and going straight toward Fiona Apple. This is a cool track with again nice vocal backing by Bramlett and featuring a nice guitar solo from Dwight and clean drumming from Kenneth Blevins. Sing For Me (Search For Sierra) is a swampy ballad with nice guitar effects and a really strong melody and backing vocals. One of my favorites on the release. Bramlett takes the lead on It's Gonna Be Beautiful, a pure pop track with country flair. This track has a strong hook and could easily find airplay. Devil's Noose, a shuffle track, has the blusiest sound so far with a loose guitar solo with a lot of swing. Steve Mackey brings up the bass on this track giving it a full feel. Stepping Stone is a cool boogie track with strong rhythm guitar work from Doug Lancio giving Dwight room to play some cool over the top riffs along with his vocals. This track definitely has some of the hotter guitar riffs on the release. Never Before has a cool R&B style rhythm with uncharacteristic drum patterns transforming it to more of a rocker and then guitar riffs adding just a twist of country blues. Cool! I'm A Bad Man is a slick blues track right out of Chicago. This track gives Dwight a really nice opportunity to dig into more characteristic blues riffs. Excellent! Losing Ground is soft country pop style ballad with a lot of airplay potential and a tight hook. With a R&B root, it gives Dwight a clear opportunity to throw down a slick guitar solo to wrap the track. Bad For You incorporates heavy bass riffs like you would expect from a much heavier genre of rock but with the softness and clever vocals of soul music. A frenzied guitar solo on this track along with spoken vocals give this a totally different flavor. Wrapping the release is Crazy Today with a country/gospel sound. Dwight takes the opportunity on this track to do some real country acoustic chicken pickin. A real foot stomper complimented nicely by McKendree's key work, it's a perfect ending to a pretty tasty release.

She started performing in the late '90s as lead vocalist and guitarist with the successful Sydney-based blues outfit, Papa Lips. Eclecto Groove Records artist: Kara Grainger - Shiver and Sigh - New Release Review

I just received the newest release (July 16, 2013), Shiver and Sigh from Kara Grainger and its a slick mix of blues grooves, R&B moves and pop country sounds. Opening with Little Pack Of Lies, Grainger shows her ability to craft a fine pop track with a steady beat, inviting vocals and subtle slide work. Title track, Shiver and Sigh sports rich vocal harmonies and definite pop hooks. Lost In You shows Kara's continued ability to create rich radio tracks with the contemporary soul/jazz sound. Bringing to mind contemporaries such as Bonnie Raitt, Cheryl Crow and Susan Tedeschi, Grainger demonstrates a solid feel for the music and a soothing voice. Relaxed slide guitar soloing on Shut Down continue to reinforce the ease at which Grainger maintains control of her sound. No Way That You Can Hurt Me now leans more toward pop country/rock and the sound of Hank Williams Jr. It's a fun little track with polished slide riffs behind the lead vocals. Keyboard ace Mike Finnigan adds sparkle to the track with his driving piano work. R&B style track Holding Out For Love gives Grainger the opportunity to really our on the steam with her lush vocals. C'Mon In My Kitchen (R Johnson) gets a solid R&B make over and it's actually one of my favorites on the album. With rich vocals, reinforcing slide work and a nice swaying groove, the track is just really nice. A real groove track is You're The One, a modern funky R&B style track maintaining a jazzy funk groove and smoking hot vocals on a really nice instrumental track. A throaty guitar solo on this track opens the door for Paulie Cerra and a cool sax riff. Delivering Breaking Up Somebody's Home like a disciple of Al Green and his famous strut, Grainger makes this often covered track her own and may even set a bar for future entries. The final track on the release, Wayne Perkins Overdue For The Blues is a quiet vocal ballad with acoustic guitar chords and lines. Very elegant. I'm really not much of a pop guy and really am not much of a basic female vocals guy, preferring a lot more edge, but this CD is a standout. It really warrants listening.
