Shuttle Music artist: Jay Gordon's Blues Venom - Slide Rules - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the newest release, Slide Rules, from Jay Gordon's Blues Venom and it is really hot. Opening with Dripping Blues, a smoky, 12 bar number, Gordon is right there on the end of the limb with his flame thrower on full. This guy plays guitar like we all love to drive, foot on the gas...wide open. His vocals are really in the style of Steve Marriott (a great thing) and his slide touch is firm and full. Backed by Sharon Butcher on bass and Tom Parham on drums this is a solid opener. Another super slide number, Pain, is a solid showcase for Gordon and his slide guitar. Think Rod Price (Foghat) or Kim Simmonds (Savoy Brown) for tone and sound. This guy definitely has it. Kicking it into gear, Lost In Time is a great rocker with more super slide work by Gordon. I don't want to make this seem like a one man band because the rhythm section is really solid but Gordon really does light it up. Very cool. Flipping over to an electric boogie, Lucky 13 is another super hot track. Gordon has a great voice for this kind of electric blues rock and with his power trio going and his slide firing, this band is on fire. Another great blues rocker is VooDoo Boogie with it's rocking boogie beat. Butcher's driving bass line really drives this tank and Gordon's searing slide work just mows them down. Robert Johnson's Travelin Riverside Blues gives a look at Gordon on acoustic guitar and his finger work is quite strong, intermixed with acoustic slide. This is great! A more traditional slow blues, Pure Grain Alcohol, shows Gordon on another detour from full on slide work and features Gordon playing traditional electric lead in response to his own vocals. Very cool. Wrapping the release is Shorty Medlock's Train Train and Gordon does a great job of keeping that southern power blues feel of Blackfoot's release. Gordon has put together a great set here and if you love that fat screaming slide guitar sound, (and who doesn't)… check this out!

WHAT THE MEDIA IS SAYING ABOUT BLUES VENOM - NO CURE  & JAY GORDON

"What really caught my ear with this Blues CD is how each studio-recorded song has the heart and soul of the live show...I can visualize the the cigarette smoke rhythmically gyrating seductively in the spotlight; I can feel the stretch of every note squeezed out of the guitar strings until they snap from red hot finger picking. It's great to hear a contemporary blues artist who's been at this for a while and knows how to write and perform good music."                                     ALL ACCESS MAGAZINE

"I believe that it is a mild understatement for me to say that California-based blues rocker guitarist Jay Gordon is an "envelope pusher"...if you have been shipwrecked for the past several years and not heard any of his work, Gordon is another of those phenomenally gifted guitarists/singer/songwriters who for some reason flies just below the collective radars of many mainstream music fans. Gordon plays with the intensity of Walter Trout, Frank Zappa or Alvin Lee, the raw passion of Johnny Winter or Houndog Taylor, and does it all with the precision of the world's finest Swiss watch. Unpredictable, impossible to categorize, and chaotic. It is also brilliant."                                                                                                                             BLUESROCKERS

"BLUES VENOM - NO CURE is a solid album of thirteen songs that show how Gordon can appeal to fans of both traditional blues as well as fans of rock-infused with a healthy does of blues....if you fall into either category, this is an album worth adding to your collection."    OC MUSIC EXAMINER

Brief Synopsis of the Bands Performing at Real Blues Festival of Orange County 3

White Boy James & The Blues Express: Having just completed their second album, Whiteboy James and the Blues Express is a detonative force to be reckoned with. Since re-forming in 2006 after a five-year absence, the band has re-established themselves as the legendary band they once were during the Southern California Blues explosion of the 80's and 90's. Whiteboy James has a mesmerizing, driving and sonic stage presence. Signed to OC indie label Rip Cat Records in 2010, WBJ&TBE consists of Whiteboy James (vocals/harmonica); Scott Abeyta (guitar); Blake Watson (bass); and Max Bangwell (drums). www.whiteboyjames.com.

Tricia Freeman Band: One of the hardest-working ladies on the SoCal music scene gigs on average five-six times a week with the Tricia Freeman Band. Freeman has toured Europe from Finland to Germany several times, with different line ups, performing songs from her own CDs and a blend of cover tunes that she makes completely her own with her bold original sound, that can only come from living the songs she sings. Besides Walter Trout, Tricia has also shared the stage with the likes of Spencer Davis, The Little River Band, Olivia Newton John, Missing Persons, Eric Burdon and The Animals. Her latest album that has been released to great reviews is Everyone Can See.
www.triciafreemanband.com.
K.K. Martin: Orange County-based, fourth-generation Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist born in West Monroe, Louisiana. Exposed in the womb to the music of Jimmie Rodgers, Robert Johnson and Hank Williams, Martin began touring with his parent's band at age ten, was transplanted to California in 1969, and cut his teeth on the local L.A. rock scene at sixteen, landing a brief stint with the Albert Collins Backup Band. K.K. Martin is a musician's musician who "delivers polished material via its basic components - a man, a guitar, and a microphone." His latest CD is Naked Blues Volume II (Rip Cat Records). www.kkmartin.com.

Jay Gordon & Blues Venom: Electric blues guitarist Jay Gordon recorded a series of albums for Blue Ace that has inspired comparisons to such legendary guitarists as Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Beginning with BLUES INFESTED (1994), Gordon won much praise from the blues community. Each successive album became increasingly successful - BROADCASTING THE BLUES LIVE (1996), ELECTRIC REDEMPTION (1998), and so on - and the guitarist soon found himself being compared to some of the most legendary guitarists to ever play electric blues. In 2000, Gordon collaborated with Phillip Walker on the JAYWALKIN album for Blue Ace, yet another accomplishment for the celebrated guitarist. His latest record is Blues Venom, No Cure (Shuttle music). www.jaygordonandthepenetrators.com.

Jumpin Jack Benny Blues Band: Entertainer extraordinaire Jumpin Jack Benny is one of the most entertaining acts on today's music scene. Audiences have been thrilled by their frenetic performances since 2003. Front man Benny Cortez brings high energy Blues to the stage reminiscent of the great 1950's rock & roll performers with smoking hot guitar work from Tony "Fingers" Naranjo. They have toured and/or recorded with B.B. Chung King, Little Milton, John Mayall, WAR, Bo Diddley, and James Cotton, among others. www.jumpinjackbennyblues.com.

Papa J And Friends: When it comes to the Blues in Orange County, California, there's no bigger or more passionate proponent than Papa J (Jeffrey Hudson). For the better part of two decades, the affable harpist/vocalist has entertained in venues ranging from House of Blues to the Doheny Blues Festival with a spirited brand of Chicago-style Jump/Blues that earned him "Entertainer of the Year" from the 2010 Los Angeles Music Awards. Papa J is founder of both the Real Blues Festival Of Orange County and Orange County Blues Society. Last Fall Papa J and Friends released The Big Show (Houndog Records). www.papajandfriends.com.

Bman's Exclusive Interview - Jay Gordon

Bman: Hi Jay. I appreciate you taking time out from your schedule to talk with me. First I want to congratulate you on your new release "No Cure". I hits like a freight train! I'm guessing that you're getting pretty good reviews all around.

Jay: Thank you for digging the CD, I like your comment Blues Venom - No Cure "It hits like a freight train"!
Yes, I'm getting great reviews from all over the world, also a lot of air play. (radio) As we speak the list is getting bigger.

Bman: I've never really heard anything quite like what you're doing. Some of the components sound familiar but not at all in this context. How long has your band been together and how do the other members influence your sound?

Jay: My music is original, I have my own distinct sound on guitar and vocally. I don't want to sound like all the clones out there trying to interpret their favorite guitar/band heroes. It's all about finding your own voice and standing as an artist on your own terms.

The musicians I put together for this cd Blues Venom - no cure have worked with me many times over the years and we have a certain chemistry that makes this project work. All my cd's are guitar driven, but Sharon and I wanted to do something completely different so I brought in the Keyboards and the harmonica to give the songs a nice back wash and still give the guys room to solo. As far as the overall sound of the band, they are all pro players and we just have a tight groove together.

JAY GORDON - LEAD GUITAR, SLIDE GUITAR AND VOCALS, SHARON BUTCHER - BASS GUITAR AND VOCALS, RICH GORDON LAMBERT - DRUMS
HARLEN SPECTOR - HAMMOND B3 AND PIANO
SPECIAL GUEST
MARIO RAMIREZ (younger brother of Richie Valens) - MISSISSIPPI SAXAPHONE, RICH WENZEL - HAMMOND B3 & PIANO
Produced By - Jay Gordon
Mixed By - Rich Wenzel
Musical Arrangements By - Jay Gordon And Sharon Butcher
Bonus Tracks Mixed and Produced By - Jay Gordon
Recorded At - Ardent Audio Productions
Engineer - Rich Wenzel
Pro Tools Engineer - Rich Wenzel

Bman: Do you write the music alone or is it a collaborative effort?

Jay: 99% of the time I write the music and the lyrics, lately the only other person I write with is Sharon Butcher.
On this cd, we wrote World Blues together.

Bman: I have pretty broad listening tastes and I hear different things that a lot of other people don't hear...or so I've been told. I hear early British blues like TYA in your basis yet the guitar style is really more predominantly Rod Price on slide but with a bit of distortion in the amp I think and Frank Marino and EVH on the articulated lead with musically minor overtones. Your vocal and harmonies could be heard over a contemporary euro metal band but the harmonica sound is genuine Chicago. Makes for an interesting mix.

Jay: By your comment I guess you have read some of the reviews, which are interesting because everyone has a different set of ears.

Since it is a guitar driven cd critics and reviewers all have a different opinion of the influences that they hear in ones playing.

So they always compare that artist to other players in that genre of music. I have been compared to guys like Johnny Winter,Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Alvin Lee, and Frank Marino, Warren Haynes even shades of Yngwie Malmsteen etc.

Which is nice because all these guys are great players, which is all right because it puts me in the right company.

Here is a quote from Andy Grigg - Real Blues Magazine:
Jay doesn’t sound like any of his predecessors and has long had his own distinctive voice. Never interested in merely recreating the past, Jay has moved the blues forward to the 21st century, infusing the music with the fire and power of rock while carving out his own place in the music world.
Gordon has recorded 14 CDs, headlined his own European tours and gained a worldwide reputation.

He was one of 50 guitarists picked by Eric Clapton (who was very impressed after hearing one of Jay's CDs) to perform at the 2004 Crossroads Guitar Festival.
Jay has played and opened up for many famous artist, such as, Johnny Winter, Eric Clapton, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Paul Rogers, and Bad Co., 38 Special, BB King, Def Leopard, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Montgomery Gentry and many more. Jay also played to 250,000 screaming fans at Sturgis, S.D. several times.
The whole concept behind my music is to promote the blues, keep it alive, show it's true art form, take it to a higher level and still be able to play rock and roll while showing the marriage between blues and rock in my own style.

Bman: Yeah. I know what you're saying. You're just playing what's in your head. I really haven't heard anything like what you are doing. I understand that you're working on a number of other projects right now. Can you tell me about them and how they differ from "No Cure"?

Jay: I have a few projects in the works right now, an all slide guitar record ... also the "Best of the Blues" a complication of all original songs off previous albums. The next studio album will be in the same mode as blues Venom with a few new surprises.

I'm in the process of putting a European tour together for next spring/summer and also working on getting some songs on TV and in motion pictures.

Bman: What's the timing on the next release?

Jay: Possibly next year. I'm always writing, so when it hits me that will be the right time.

Bman: With all of this time on the studio, are you getting any time for the road? Do you have a favorite venue?

Jay: As far as the road is concerned, we are looking forward to hitting the road, as long as the tours are put together in the proper manner.

My favorite venue is anything with a large stage, great sound system and a full audience. From Clubs to Concerts to Festivals.

This way my publicist, Doug "The Bull Dog" Deutsch can work his magic.

Bman: Well, good luck with "No Cure". I appreciate your time and hope to hear the next of your projects really soon!

Thank you for the interview Bman.

Jay Gordon

No Cure - Jay Gordon's Blues Venom

I just recieved a copy of Jay Gordon's Blues Venom - No Cure. WOW!

If you like guitar blues this ride is the equivalent of being dropped from the top of the Sears Tower. It comes on hard and fast and doesn't let up! It is a fusion of a lot of different sounds but with a sound of it's own. I can draw influences like Alvin Lee's TYA, Leslie West, Frank Marion's Mahogany Rush, Foghat... I mean this is no recording for sissy's. It has a definite rock flavor but is right on the blues and the instrumentals are over the top. If you like hard driving blues rock ...you'll absolutely love this recording!!

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Gordon grew up in Chicago, the center of the blues world. Throughout his career, Jay Gordon has become famous for his slashing guitar solos, his passionate vocals, and his dedication to the blues. While his inspirations have included Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, he does not sound like any of his predecessors and has long had his own distinctive voice. Never interested in merely recreating the past, Jay has moved the blues forward to the 21st century, infusing the music with the fire and power of rock while carving out his own place in the music world.
Gordon was one of 50 guitarists picked by Eric Clapton himself to perform at the 2004 Crossroads Guitar Festival. He has played and opened up for many famous artists, such as, Johnny Winter, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, BB King, Def Leopard, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, and many more.
