RICHARD THOMPSON announces new album

RICHARD THOMPSON ELECTRIC TRIO – UK tour in Aug & Sept
2015
“Richard Thompson is the kind of guitar
player other guitar players revere. It’s not just his technique, nor the fact
that he’s equally at home with an electric or an acoustic guitar. He’s also a
songwriter of uncommon skill.” — NPR
"Richard's
been one of my favorite guitar players for a very long time. When I think about
it, he's also one of my favorite songwriters and favorite singers. He's the
Ultimate Triple Threat. Getting to work closely with him on this record was a
truly rewarding experience, not to mention a great thrill. And he keeps alive my
streak of working exclusively with artists who make me look good as a producer."
- Jeff Tweedy
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 28th,
2015 – The renowned guitarist and songwriter Richard Thompson will
release Still, an album of new music produced by Jeff Tweedy, on June 29, 2015
via Proper Records.
Still will be available in several configurations
including a twelve-track CD, a twelve-track double 180-gram vinyl album and a
deluxe CD package that includes a five-song EP from a previously un-released
session.
Still was recorded in a two-story rehearsal loft in Chicago
over the course of just nine days with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy at the helm, backed
by several longtime players from both Thompson’s and Tweedy’s bands. Thompson
enlisted Tweedy’s production skills in an effort to shake up his own creative
approach to making records. “It turned out be really good idea,” says
Thompson. “Jeff is musically very sympathetic. Although some of his
contributions are probably rather subtle to the listener’s ear, they were really
interesting and his suggestions were always very pertinent.”
“I
really tried to not have any preconceived ideas,” Thompson says of working
with Tweedy, “but of course you do. I tried to shove those to the back of my
mind. You don’t really know until you turn up — what the studio is like, what
the gear is like. It ended up being a nice unfolding of
surprises.”
The key to Still’s emotional resonance is a set of
gripping new Thompson compositions rich with his signature mix of trenchant
insight, gallows humor, and keen empathy for characters at the brink of being
overcome by their emotions, their pasts, or themselves.
A recipient of
BBC’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Mojo’s Les Paul Award, Richard Thompson was
appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2011 New Year
Honours List. The Americana Music Association also recently honored him with a
Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. Robert Plant, REM, Elvis Costello,
Bonnie Raitt and many others have recorded Thompson’s songs.
Taken as a
whole, Still is a powerful dispatch from an acknowledged master who remains
unafraid to put himself into demanding new environments – its title reflecting
that resilience and seemingly endless resourcefulness. “Or,” Thompson
adds slyly, “it could be read as ‘Is he still performing? I thought he died
years ago.”

Whiskeytown, the Bottle Rockets were setting off musical M-80s as perhaps the
most underappreciated roots-rock/Americana band of the mid-‘90s.”

The
Bottle Rockets (https://www.bloodshotrecords.com/artist/bottle-rockets) are reissuing their long out-of-print, first two
albums Bottle Rockets and The Brooklyn Side on November 19 via
Bloodshot Records (pre-order is available here). This is
the 20th anniversary of the 1993 release of the band’s debut,
self-titled album.
SPIN.com announced the deluxe package’s release date and
are currently premiering an exclusive track from the album, a bonus cut of
“Indianapolis”, recorded in 1991 with Brian Henneman on guitar and vocals,
backed by Uncle Tupelo’s Jeff Tweedy (now of Wilco) and Jay Farrar (Son Volt).
The song is one of four such demo takes on the reissues package, and was part of
the recording that originally got The Bottle Rockets signed to their first
record label (ESD) in the early 1990s.

When The Bottle Rockets hit the scene in the mid ‘90s,
the world wasn't quite sure what to do with them. With their punk-rock pedigrees
and arena-rock energy, their tougher-than-Springsteen storytelling and their
romantic hearts sewn bare on their denim sleeves, the pride of Festus, MO
confounded musical generalities as they laid waste to clubs across the Midwest
and then, soon enough, the nation. Their
signature sound paved the way for bands melding classic-rock muscle and roots
aestheticism like My Morning Jacket, Avett Brothers, Drive-By Truckers, and many
others.
Bottle Rockets
and The Brooklyn Side are collected here as a remastered two-CD deluxe
reissue set of the long out-of-print albums, with an additional 19 previously
unreleased tracks. The package consists of an extensive 40-page booklet
detailing the band in full context of the ‘90s alt- scene, with editorial
contributions from respected peers and fellow musicians such as Steve Earle,
Patterson Hood, Lucinda Williams, and many others. Both reissued albums and
bonus material have been meticulously remastered under the supervision of famed
producer and musician Eric "Roscoe" Ambel.
The
Bottle Rockets’ first and second albums, Bottle Rockets and The
Brooklyn Side, are widely revered as not only two of the band’s finest
releases, but also two formative, flagship recordings in the early era of a
now-broadly recognized genre. The band was unceremoniously birthed in 1992 and
they very quickly became a forebearer for the new style alongside Uncle Tupelo,
Old 97’s, and Whiskeytown.
The
Bottle Rockets have just recently announced several tour dates
surrounding the reissue release date:

You Are Not Alone - Mavis Staples + Jeff Tweedy
Mavis Staples (born July 10, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American rhythm and blues and gospel singer and civil rights activist who recorded with The Staple Singers, her family's band.
On February 13, 2011, Mavis Staples won her first Grammy award in the category for Best Americana Album for You Are Not Alone. In her acceptance speech, a shocked and crying Staples said "This has been a long time coming."
On May 7th, 2011, Mavis was awarded an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
Jeffrey Scot "Jeff" Tweedy (born August 25, 1967 in Belleville, Illinois, United States) is an American songwriter, musician and leader of the band Wilco. Tweedy joined rockabilly band The Plebes with high school friend Jay Farrar in the early 1980s, but Tweedy's musical interests caused one of Farrar's brothers to quit. The Plebes changed their name to The Primitives in 1984, and subsequently to Uncle Tupelo. Uncle Tupelo garnered enough support to earn a record deal and to tour nationally. After releasing four albums, the band broke up in 1994 because of conflicts between Tweedy and Farrar.
In 1994, Tweedy formed Wilco with John Stirratt, Max Johnston, and Ken Coomer. Wilco has released eight albums and found commercial success with their albums Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, A Ghost Is Born, Sky Blue Sky and Wilco (The Album). The band also released two collaboration albums with Billy Bragg and one with The Minus 5. Jeff Tweedy has been the recipient of two Grammy Awards, including Best Alternative Album for A Ghost Is Born. Tweedy has also participated in a number of side groups including Golden Smog and Loose Fur, published a book of poems, and released a DVD of solo performances. He was originally influenced by punk and country music, but has later reflected more experimental themes in his music.
