I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Everything Now, by JW-Jones and it's a solid mix of blues, R&B, rock, and pop. Opening with title track, Everything Now, JW-Jones on lead vocal and guitar has penned a cool, pop rocker with a strong melody, featuring Stanton Moore on drums, Gordie Johnson on harmony, rhythm, bass and keys making this a super opener. Blues rocker, Papa's In The Pen has a cool rhythm and Jones' vocals are strong with a tight guitar solo pushing the track nicely. With Eric Eggleston on harmony vocal, rhythm guitar and percussion, Aaron Sterling on drums and Jeff Rogers on keys another solid entry. Shuffle track, Take Your Time features Jimmie Vaughan on guitar with his signature style, and includes Jason Corbiere on drums. My favorite track on the release is To Tell You The Truth (I Lied) with Jones' best vocal on the release and it's supple bluesy feel. Cutting loose on guitar Jones really gives this track an extra boost, joined by Jacob Clarke on bass, Eggleston on rhythm guitar and percussion, and Jesse O'Brien on keys. Very nice. Another favorite is R&B influenced, When You Left, with a real nice melody and with Kaz Kazanoff, John Mills and Al Gomez on horns working in support of Jones on vocal and guitar. Wrapping the release is rocker, Good To Be True, with a contagious melody and driving beat. JW has a solid rocker here with plenty of diversity and soul.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Everybody Let's Roll, from The Texas Horns, and I really like it! Opening with title track, Everybody Let's Roll, The Texas Horns (Kaz Kazanoff on tenor sax, Al Gomez on trumpet, and John Mills on bari sax) come out steaming with Carolyn Wonderland on lead vocal, Mike Keller on rhythm guitar, Sean Giddings on keys, Chris Marsh on bass, and Tom Brechtlein on drums and featuring Anson Funderburgh with some real nice guitar lead. Solid opener. Piano boogie, I Ain't Mad With You, led by Matt Hubbard really rocks with excellent solos from Kaz and Johnny Moeller and a fat fat bottom by Mills. Excellent! A really interesting (bluesy) rework of The Beatles, I Want You (She's So Heavy), has great horn blending with Gomez taking the lead on trumpet. With it's jazzy drum hitch by Brannen Temple, a cool organ solo by Sean Geddings and a blast of blues by Moeller on guitar, this is a punchy track. Soulful, Prisoner In Paradise, features Guy Forsyth on lead vocal and is the certain radio track with brassy backing and a real nice trumpet solo by Gomez and a warm sax solo by Kaz. Wrapping the release is JB Lenoir's J.B.s Rock with hot drumming by Jason Corbiere and sassy sax work by Kaz. Flanigin rolls in some warm organ tones and Jimmie Vaughan lays down some trademark guitar riffs making this a great closer.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release (October 22, 2021), Pinky's Blues, from Sue Foley and I think it's her best yet! Opening with title track, Pinky's Blues, Foley digs in on guitar, establishing that this is a going to be a blues guitar release right up front. Her riffs are stinging and relentless. Angela Strehli's blues strut, Two Bit Texas Town has a great aggressive, Willie Dixon feel featuring Foley on vocal and with vicious SRV like riffs, Jon Penner on bass, and Chris Layton on drums. One of my favorite tracks on the release is Southern Men and it's story telling format. Foley not only does a great job on vocal but with bends and a lot of vibrato, really whammy's this track. Excellent! Another Strehli penned track, Say It's Not So really works nicely with rich vocals and double stopped rhythm work by Foley. Here soloing throughout is really nicely phrased and emotional. Excellent! Clarence Gatemouth Brown's Okie Dokie Stomp is killer with all of the zest in Gate's original. Folley is really rocking the house here and you better bet I'm rocking! Robert Nighthawk's Someday is another terrific cover of a Chicago style blues. Foley's vocals are really solid but her guitar stretching is fresh and gripping. Tell me you aren't stomping your heel. Wrapping the release is Willie Dixon's When The Cat's Gone The Mice Play. Foley sells this one to the max with sweet vocals and fleet fingered riffs. One of the best traditional style electric blues releases that I have heard this year end to end. Excellent!

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The Pleasure's All Mine, from Jimmie Vaughn and it's a super blues cd. Opening disc one with title track, The Pleasure's All Mine, Jimmie Vaughan lays right in the slot with this low slung blues track. His guitar work is stylistic and tasty, his vocals are solid and fat sax by Kas Kasenoff work really caps it nicely with George Rains on drums, Ronnie James on bass, Billy Pitman on rhythm guitar and Greg Picollo on tenor sax. Terrific instrumental, Comin' & Goin' really hits the spot with tight drums rhythms by Rains and a melodic guitar lead. Excellent! Up beat shuffle, How Can You Be So Mean, will get you bopping in your seat. Vaughan has one of those voices that works really nicely with swing beat music and his guitar style has just the right sting. Really nice. Cool boogie track, Roll, Roll, Roll has a strong bottom and Vaughan's vocal paired with his loose, but slick style makes for an unbeatable pair. Another great jump track, (She's Got the) Blues For Sale, pairs the hot sax work of Picollo and Kasenoff with carefree vocals and really tasty guitar work by Vaughan.
Opening disc 2 with two stepper, I Ain't Never, Vaughan sets a simple guitar palate but teamed with his smooth vocals and Doug James on sax makes for a great opener. Slower blues, Teardrop Blues, gives Vaughan a super opportunity to dig in on guitar and he takes the opportunity to work it nicely. Paired with a sax underwork by Picollo and James, this is a really nice track. R&B track, What Makes You So Tough really works nicely into Vaughn's repertoire with more emphasis on vocal but still turning to some stinging riffs to accent the way. Jazzy instrumental, Greenbacks, is a really nice departure from the blues with a great swing and fluid guitar runs. Super bari sax soloing by Doug James and a tight bottom by Rains makes this one of my favorites on the release. Cried Like A Baby has particularly soulful vocals by Vaughn and excellent guitar punctuation which really is Vaughn's trademark. Very cool! Wrapping the set is Shake A Hand, featuring Lou Ann Barton on lead vocal over solid horn backing by James and Picollo and a final fat sax solo by James makes this a strong closer to a great set.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Please Come Home, from Jimmie Vaughan and it's solid. Opening with Lloyd Price's R&B track, Baby, Please Come Home Vaughan has the mic and joined by George Rains on drums, Ronnie James on bass, Billy Pitman on rhythm guitar, Doug James on bari sax, Greg Piccolo on tenor sax, this band is rockin. On Lefty Frizzell's shuffle No One To Talk To (But The Blues), Vaughan's vocals are stellar and his guitar playing low slung and meaningful. Chuck Willis' What's Your Name? has a real great tempo and the steady drumming by Rains sets the tempo and James' sax work is fat and meaty. Very nice. Low slung, It's Love Baby (24 Hours A Day) has a real nice off beat pace and Vaughan's guitar lead answers the response nicely and his soloing with James' bari work is really nice. Fats Domino's So Glad has a great feel with hot sax work by James and Piccolo and I really like Vaughans unusual soloing techniques here setting the track off nicely. Wrapping the release is Jimmy Reed's Baby, What's Wrong with classic Reed tempo and sound. T. Jarrod Bonta joins on piano and randy Zimmerman is on trombone with Kaz Kazanoff on tenor sax, Al Gomez on trumpet, Jimmy Shortell on trumpet. Vaughan rocks this release and is pure to his style.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The Ice Queen, from Sue Foley and I think it may be her best yet. Opening with Come To Me with Charlie Sexton joining on vocal and slide guitar, Foley adds a little funk to her already bluesy deal with Chris Maresh on bass, Chris Layton on drums and Kyle Thompson on maracas. Run has a country 2 step feel and Foley really drives this one with her ambitious guitar rhythm. Slow blues and title track, The Ice Queen, shows Foley at her purest with George rains on drums and Billy Horton on bass. Her riffs are right off a Hooker release and her vocals are simple and direct. Very nice. Shuffle track, The Lucky Ones features Jimmie Vaughan trading lead vocal and guitar riffs. With the addition of Mike Flanigin or organ, the track has an additional dimension and Foley's guitar riffs play nicely against Vaughan's. Billy Gibbons joins on Fool's Golds and his vocals really work great with Foley's. his solo work is always distinctive and effortless giving this track a nice sparkle. Blues ballad, If I Have Forsaken You is the strongest melodic track on the release giving it solid radio potential and Vaughan's distinctive playing style and tone shine. An updated cover of Bessie Smith's Send Me To the 'Lectric Chair is cool and fun. With Spanish and classical influences, The Dance highlight's Foley's acoustic guitar proficiency and also adds nicely to the overall texture of the release. Wrapping the release is Carter family's Cannonball Blues, again only Foley on acoustic guitar and vocal. This is a real nice closer for a totally enjoyable release.

Release Her Label Debut CD, The Ice Queen, March 2, 2018

EDMONTON, AB – Stony Plain Records announces the signing of
acclaimed Canadian roots guitarist/singer Sue Foley, and will release her label
debut CD, The Ice Queen, on March 2, 2018.
Produced by Mike Flanigin, who also plays organ on the new
disc, The Ice Queen was recorded at Firestation Studios in San
Marcos, Texas. Joining Sue Foley as special guests is a trio of legendary Texas
guitarslingers – Jimmie Vaughan, Z.Z.Top’s Billy F Gibbons and Charlie Sexton -
as well as a host of other Lone Star State all-stars, including Chris “Whipper”
Layton (formerly of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble) and George Rains
(drums), Derek O’Brien (guitar), Chris Maresh and Billy Horton (bass) and The
Texas Horns: John Mills, Al Gomez, Jimmy Shortell, Randy Zimmerman and Mark “Kaz”
Kazanoff.
“I’m extremely excited to be working with Holger
Petersen and Stony Plain Records,” Sue Foley says about the new CD. “Holger is
one of the most knowledgeable ‘real music’ people in the business. Stony Plain
is known to put out great music and I know The Ice Queen has
found her home.”
Sue Foley is the only female member of the famed “Jungle Show,”
featuring Billy Gibbons, Jimmie Vaughan, Mike Flanigin and Chris Layton, which
became one of the hottest tickets in Austin in 2016. Soon after playing two
sold out shows at Austin City Limits Live 3TEN Club in December, Foley entered
the studio with her Texan pals and began laying down tracks for the new album. She will return to Austin for more of “The Jungle Shows” on
December 26 and 27 at Antone's.
Recorded
throughout 2017, The Ice Queen represents Foley’s full
circle journey – her return to the roots of her career in Austin with
producer Mike Flanigin. The album was recorded with her long-time friends and
collaborators Vaughan, Gibbons, Layton, Sexton and others, as well as members
of the Tedeschi Trucks and Gary Clark Jr. bands.
“When I was a
teenager I idolized Jimmie Vaughan and Billy F Gibbons,” Foley says. “They're
both legends now so this feels like an historical event (at least it does for
me). And I grew up sitting at the feet of players like George ‘Big Beat’ Rains,
Derek O'Brien and The Texas Horns. I spent many nights watching Charlie Sexton
and the Arc Angels with Chris Layton. I learned and grew more musically in my
years in Austin than at any point in my life. The fact that all these mega
talented musicians have graced my album is beyond anything I hoped for. I am
still pinching myself.”
A
flood of inspiration and themes can be found on each of the tracks – ranging
from lost love, anguish, and struggle to
release, forgiveness and rebirth. Mostly recorded live in the studio,
Foley’s emotional vocal delivery, conviction, accessible yet inspired lyrics
and intrepid guitar playing are all laid out, bare and raw for the songs to
reveal.
Opening with the radio friendly, funky, swamp-meets Bo
Diddley beat of “Come to Me,” The Ice Queen also features the
upbeat and rollicking tracks “Run,”
“The Lucky Ones” (a duet with Jimmie Vaughan) and “Gaslight.” There are several
bluesy and soulful tracks, including “81,” “The Ice Queen,” (with its menacing
John Lee Hooker vibe in tone and substance), “Fool's Gold” (featuring Billy F
Gibbons on vocals and harmonica), “If I Have Forsaken You” (with the horns
sounding echoes of the great Bobby “Blue” Bland), and a cheeky, guitar-heavy
cover of Bessie Smith’s “Send Me To The ‘Lectric Chair.” Foley also provides
some more mellow and unexpected songs on The Ice Queen with the
jazzy “Death of a Dream,” the flamenco-blues hybrid “The Dance” (which
showcases her acoustic guitar work) and a beautiful cover of the Carter
Family’s “Cannonball Blues.”
Sue
Foley is a multi-award-winning musician and one of the finest blues and roots
artists working today. She is a veritable triple-threat of musical talent as a
guitarist, songwriter and vocalist. As with many blues women of the past, Foley
has a long history of defying convention, and being a positive role model for
aspiring, young female musicians.
She
has been working professionally since the age of 16, and by the age of 21,
Foley had relocated to Austin, Texas, and began recording for Antone’s, the
esteemed blues label and historic nightclub that helped launch the career of
Stevie Ray Vaughan and many others. In the two decades that have followed, Sue
Foley has been busy touring and recording steadily, all while toting her
signature pink paisley Fender Telecaster. In 2001, she won the prestigious
Juno Award (Canadian equivalent of the Grammy) and also holds the record for
the most Maple Blues Awards in Canada and has earned three Trophees de Blues de
France. She has also garnered several nominations at the Blues Music Awards
from The Blues Foundation.
The Ice Queen represents Sue Foley’s
indefatigable commitment to her craft, and her transparency with the journey
that birthed her, further proving that you can’t keep a good blueswoman down, particularly when she is The
Ice Queen.

New York, NY --- Open ears and an open mind are the essence
of singer, guitarist and songwriter Robert Cray, whose career spans from the
roots of the blues to the pinnacles of rock, from the 80s to this moment. He
grew up listening to the gospel of the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, Bobby
Bland's soul, Jimi Hendrix's rock guitar and the Beatles pop sounds. Those
influences and the signature sound Cray has imprinted on modern popular music
are brought together in the Robert Cray Band's double CD and video package 4
Nights of 40 Years Live.
The set will be available in a variety of formats - 2
LPs with digital download card, 2 CDs + DVD, Blu-Ray + 2 CDs and digitally. 4
Nights of 40 Years Live will be released August 28 on the Netherlands-based
Mascot Label Group.
The first CD is fresh, live recordings from four nights
recently recorded at four venues in the LA area. With his current band
--longtime bassist, collaborator and friend Richard Cousins, keyboardist Dover
Weinberg (who was in Cray's first band) and drummer Les Falconer (O'Jays, Keb
'Mo) – Cray fronts a group that is solid, seasoned and vital. The playing is in
the moment, and the sound is singular.
The thirteen cuts are selected from the Cray Band's
recording library of 20 releases. Among them are rock radio favorites
“Bad Influence” and “Right Next Door (Because of Me),” the soul searing “Love
Gone to Waste,” and “These Things,” a bluesy ballad that features one of Cray's
string-bending and mind-blowing guitar solos. The live CD is the fourth
Cray Band release produced by Steve Jordan, who plays drums on several cuts.
Also guesting are vocalist Kim Wilson and harmonica player Lee Oskar, tenor
saxophonist Trevor Lawrence, trumpeter Steve Madaio and saxophonist Tom Scott.
The bonus CD is a revealing glimpse of Cray's early career
and the promise of a future that would reward fans for decades. Selected
from the band's set at the 1982 San Francisco Blues Festival and a 1987
appearance on the Dutch TV Show “Countdown,” the music captures the band's
youthful presence and its ability to revive the blues without abandoning it.
Included are favorites from the Cray's Band 80s set lists; “Smoking Gun”
and “Too Many Cooks.”
The 94 minute video in 4 Nights of 40 Years Live is a Cray
Band convergence. Coming together are a mesmerizing blend of clips from the San
Francisco Blues Festival, the Dutch TV show and the four concerts featured on
the first CD. Between clips Cray comments on the band's history and his
personal philosophy of music. There is also behind the scenes footage of
the band collaborating with producer Jordan. And putting the Cray Band in
perspective are interviews with Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Bonnie Raitt,
Jimmie Vaughan and Buddy Guy each giving their personal response to the music
and the man.
It is extraordinary for musicians to thrive over four
decades, and the Robert Cray Band is just that, extraordinary. The group has
won five Grammy Awards, put 15 studio albums on the Billboard Charts, sold

An extra full house was the scene recently at the Rhythm
Room, Phoenix, AZ USA when blues legends and veteran road pros Nick Moss and Jimmie Vaughan delivered killer sets of tasty Blues. Chicago based
Nick Moss and Michael Ledbetter
(guitar and vocals), were joined by Bob
Corritore (harmonica and vocals) and drummer Patrick Seals for a full hour of house rocking ‘Chicago style’ tunes.
Just two weeks into a seven week Western USA tour this group was jumping.
According to road tour manager, Javik
Smith (son of Willie “Big-Eyes” Smith)
the core band will work the West for five additional weeks, take a short rest
and then head out to the Eastern leg of the USA as the summer progresses. Moss
showed his decades of experience through the fret board runs, fills, comps and
seamless blending with guest harmonica player Bob Corritore and members of his
regular band. Great support came from Michael Ledbetter on rhythm guitar and
vocals who has been with Moss for the past two years. Classically trained in
Opera, Ledbetter calls Elgin, Illinois home. Once again, opportunity comes to
those who prepare themselves. Sounding like a page out of Mike Bloomfield’s
biography, Nick Moss initially discovered Ledbetter through a recommendation
from one of his friends. Gradual collaboration between the men evolved over
time. A one-off gig turned into occasional fill-ins which in turn eventually
lead to a regular spot on the Moss stage. Kudos to Illinois resident and
experienced pro drummer Patrick Seals who set the beats and drove the tempo.
Seals’ background includes Jazz Studies and Instrumental Performance at
Columbia College, Chicago.
This year, Nick Moss received his 16th nomination
from the Blues Music Association for "Best Blues Rock Album" for Here I Am, which debuted at number 2 on
the Relix/Jambands Radio Chart, and at number 6 on the Living Blues Radio
Chart! This latest CD is Nick’s ninth release on his own Blue Bella Records
label.
The place was primed and pumping by the time that Jimmie
Vaughn and his Tilt-a-Whirl band took the stage. Scorching through a 21 song
set, of songs mostly from his 2010 release, Plays, Blues, Ballads and Favorites, Vaughan and his band barely
stopped to take a breath. The crowd began with respectful
reserve leaving breathing room on the dance floor and was on their feet and
shoulder to shoulder by the end of the last song. Everyone knows about Vaughan
but we should be reminded of what a great group of players make up the
Tilt-A-Whirl team. Horn section really stood out as a huge asset. Professional
to a tee was the drummer, bassist and rhythm guitarists who performed
flawlessly and barely took a bow for their efforts. Good music, like
photography, looks easy and natural when done well. These folks blended like
prize-winning Barbeque. Founding member of Double Trouble, Lou Ann Barton
joined the group for a flurry of songs including Shake A Hand, Scratch, signature duet Wheel of Fortune and Middle
of the Night. Jimmie stayed on stage for 6 String Down while the band took a quick break. Motorhead Baby, Middle of the Night (with
Barton), White Boots and D/FW closed out the performance. It was striking
at how nice, personable and frankly politely approachable Vaughan was as he

performance. Strong encouragement to watch for and attend performances by both
Moss and/or Vaughan. I for one got more than my dollars’ worth at this show.

Angela Strehli (born November 22, 1945, Lubbock, Texas, United States) is an American electric blues singer and songwriter. She is also a Texas blues historian and impresario. Despite a sporadic recording career, Strehli spends time each year performing in Europe, the US and Canada
In the early 1960s, Strehli learned the harmonica and bass guitar before becoming a vocalist. In 1966 she visited Chicago, and attended concerts given by Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy. In her final university year, Strehli and Lewis Cowdrey formed the Fabulous Rockets. Strehli then sang as a backing vocalist for James Polk and the Brothers and assisted with Storm, which had been formed by Cowdrey and Jimmie Vaughan.
In 1972, she was a founding member of Southern Feeling, along with W. C. Clark and Denny Freeman. Three years later Strehli became the stage manager and sound technician at Antone's, a nightclub in Austin, Texas. By 1986, Strehli had recorded Stranger Blues (EP) which help launch Antone's own record label. Her debut album was Soul Shake (1987, Antone's Records), and she appeared on Dreams Come True, with Lou Ann Barton and Marcia Ball (1990). Her own effort Blonde and Blue (1993, Rounder Records) assisted in building the Austin, Texas blues scene, alongside nightclub owner Clifford Antone, Kim Wilson, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimmie Vaughan. In 1998, Strehli released Deja Blue, and Blue Highway followed in 2005.
Strehli has either recorded, toured or performed with Andy Santana, Elvin Bishop and Pinetop Perkins, and appeared at festivals including Notodden Blues Festival, Long Beach Blues Festival, Edmonton's Labatt Blues Festival and the San Francisco Blues Festival. In 2003, she recorded music for the tribute album, Shout, Sister, Shout: A Tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
