Soulful Femme - Attitude - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Attitude, from Soulful Femme and it's a tight rocker with a blues overtone. Opening with title track, Attitude, Soulful Femme principals Stevee Wellons and Cheryl Rinovato get down to business. Wellons is upfront on vocal, with Rinovato playing a great blues rhythm, backed by Albert Castiglia on guitar, Michael Bram on drums, Matt Raymond on bass and Dave Gross on Hammond. Kevin Burt adds some really soulful lead vocal on Insane Asylum. Rich, warm vocal blending with Wellons and nicely placed guitar lead by Rinovato make this one of my favorites on the release. With an R&B feel, Loser's Game has a strong melody, and with Wellons' vocal lead and a solid guitar solo, just the right feel for a top radio track. Reggae fused, Dysfunctional Funk is another track with strong radio appeal with a strong melody, solid lead vocals and nice addition of Doug Wooverton on trumpet and Mark Earley on sax. Wrapping the release is Time To Walk, an easy cruiser with smooth vocals by Wellons and a cool guitar solo by Rinovato and super bass lines by Raymond. Solid closer.

Gulf Coast Records artist: Kevin Burt - Stone Crazy - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Stone Crazy, by Kevin Burt and it's a cool contemporary blues rocker with a pop edge. Opening with I Ain't Got No Problem With It, a free and easy rocker, Burt on lead vocal, guitar and harmonica is joined by Mike Zito on guitar, Doug Byrkit on bass, Matthew Johnson on drums, Lewis Stephens on keys and Jimmy Carpenter on sax. Purdy Lil Thing has a cool, swampy feel and Burt's deep, smooth vocals are excellent! Johnson's drum touch is terrific and guitar accents by Zito have just the right touch. R&B based, title track, Stone Crazy, has a laid back feel and Burt's vocals float nicely on a lush melody. You Get What You See is a smooth fusion between a blues shuffle and a Booker T jam. With it's driving guitar vamp and Carpenter's sax work, this is a cool track. With it's funky groove, Better Off Dead is one to be reckoned with. Burt lays in the pocket with the confidence of Bill Withers on the most likely radio track on the release. Wrapping the release is Got To Make A Change, an interesting ballad with wailing electric slide under Burt's soulful vocals.

Little Village Foundation artist: Kevin Burt - Heartland & Soul - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Heartland & Soul from Kevin Burt and it's quite entertaining. Opening with Day Day, a funky R&B track with really nice vocals by Kevin Burt . backed by Jerry Jemmott on bass, Derrick DMar Martin on drums, Kid Andersen on guitar, Jon Otis on percussion, Jim Pugh on keys and with Lisa Leuschner on backing vocals, this is a great opener. Thank You is a solid soul track with a great set up. Rhythmic rim shots and a warm bass line set the pace on this one that does a sideward salute to Sly's Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin). Working this track over and over, Burt really milks the soul out of it. Very nice. I really like the soulful movement of Real Love and it's traditional R&B vocal phrasing with solid harp work by Burt. A slower, almost folksy take on Lennon & McCartney's Eleanor Rigby reminds me of Richey Havens and that's good. Unsung vocal hero. Never is a super bluesy soul track with some of Burt's best vocals on the release. With a great bass lead by Jemmott and nice guitar lead by Kid Andersen, this is one of my favorites on the release. Wrapping the release is blues shuffle, Wake Up, Baby with Burt on acoustic guitar, vocal and harp. Burt is an entertaining musician, solid singer songwriter and makes a cool album. Check it out.
