I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Short Stack Records artist: Johnny Sansone - Into Your Blues - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Into Your Blues, from Johnny Sansone and it's got great style. Opening with title track, Into Your Blues, Johnny Sansone on harmonica, resonator guitar and lead vocal sets a cool, slinky pace. With Mike Morgan and Johnny Burgin on electric guitar, Jeffrey Bridges on bass, John Milham on drums, Tom Worrell on piano, Chris Spies on B3, Brad Walker on sax, Steve Lands on trumpet and Michael Sinkus on congos, bongos and tambourine, this is a solid opener. On Chicago style blues, Pay For This Song, Sansone gets in the slot with a super low slung lope and guitar riff by Burgin. Sansone blows some of his classic harmonica riffs giving the track a real Chicago feel. Jason Ricci guests on Blowin' Fire, an up tempo blues rocker. With solid vocals by Ricci and his flaming harmonica style, this is a great addition. Little Freddie King is featured on vocal and guitar on Willie's Juke Joint, a simple John Lee Hooker style, primitive boogie. Driving, The Getaway, is one of my favorite tracks on the release with Sansone back on lead vocal and harmonica. With it's stripped down feel and harmonica vamp, this is a cool track. Sansone lays into the slide Resonator on New Crossroads, another boogie track with a simple bottom by Milham and Bridges under Sansone on vocal. Single Room has a cool, swampy feel with Sansone on vocal and shimmery guitar work by Burgin and Morgan and great percussion work by Milham and Sinkus. Wrapping the release Southern Dream, is a solid acoustic instrumental with Sansone layered over himself on Resonator, slide resonator and guitar. This is a cool closer for a cool release.

Orleans Records artist: Little Freddie King - Fried Rice & Chicken - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Fried Rice & Chicken, from Little Freddie King and its a lot of fun. Opening with Willie Woods' super groove, Cleos Back, Freddie Martin aka Little Freddie King lays down his primitive, real deal blues. King has a loose but smart guitar style on this instrumental, backed by Earl Stanley on bass, Kerry Brown on drums and Crazy Rick Allen on organ. Very cool. Slow blues number, Mean Little Woman features King on vocal and this is where the rubber meets the road. Not only does King have meaty raw chops, but his vocals are authentic and unpolished. Excellent. The Great Chinese is drums laden with cool guitar rhythms. Ray Charles' What'd I Say is spirited with vibrant key work by Allen and  tight guitar and vocal by King. Very nice. Sing Sang Sung is a great rumble with Wacko Wade Wright on drums, Anthony Anderson on bass Bobby Lewis DiTullio on harp and of course Kings own spontaneous riffs on guitar. Very nice. Freddie King's Hide Away is up next and LF King shows his fluid riffs in King style. Not smooth like Freddie...not supposed to be. Excellent! Wrapping the release is Bad Chicken with it's Bo Diddley beat, harp by DiTullio, tom tom by Wright, bass by Anderson and lead chikin pickin  (and chicken call) by King. This is a really cool release and a lot of fun for everyone.

Ironing Board Sam's New Look at Jazzfest!
Ironing Board Sam at Jazzfest 2015

Ironing Board Sam, Major Handy, Ernie Vincent and Little Freddie King played at the New Orleans Jazzfest last week.

Jazzfest is always an amazing opportunity for our artists
; new fans experience their shows live and they are immersed in the musical camaraderie of the festival atmosphere. Ironing Board Sam, in particular, feels a strong connection to the festival, as it is where he debuted some of his most incredible stage shows (check out photos of the "underwater blues show" on our blog here!) This year, Sam's dazzling performance included a reflective outfit and drumming with flaming sticks!

Check out this video of Sam's drummer, Kerry Brown's, finale, and more photos from Jazzfest are on the blog here!
