Marshall Lawrence - Feeling Fine - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Feeling Fine, by Marshall Lawrence and it's a solid rocker. Opening with title track, Feeling Fine, Lawrence on lead vocal and guitar is joined by Zach Daniel Robertson on bass, Alan Beveridge on drums and Andrew Glover on keys, the band has nice vocal harmonies somewhat similar to Good Rats. Country/blues flavored rocker, Ida Mae, has a cool shuffle spine and aggressive guitar lead and tight drums reminding me a bit of Molly Hatchet. Blues number, Blues Still Got Me has a great 12 bar feel. Grinding guitar lead gives this track a definite edge making it one of my favorites on the release. Bluesy ballad, Help Me Find My Way Home, has strong radio appeal with a nice melody, modest but interesting guitar lead and well balanced backing. Latin flavored, Keep On Walking, features Lawrence on slide guitar and he sets a nice groove. With tight drum riffs and a solid bass line, this is a great lead into the release closer, Dirty Dishes. Blues rocker with a cool backbeat, not only gives up a good foot stomper but also has nice guitar lead and some of Lawrence's best vocals.

While Woodbury’s guitar is impressive, Chris Kliemann’s tickling of the ivories warrants special attention.  His solos are tasteful, his comping excellent.  The band has yet another outstanding soloist in Mike Marinig, whose saxophone technique and vocabulary is impressive, and his musicianship excellent.  Marinig also doubles on lead vocals.  Marinig is a strong lead singer, with a gutsy voice and just the right amount of grime for a band paying homage to the roots of the blues. The album is well worth a listen.  Not only is the playing and production quite good, but the style is unique.  Of course, the band draws heavily on more traditional blues influences, but their sound is not old-fashioned.  Quite the contrary, they are a new and unique addition to the blues tradition." House Call - Marshall Lawrence - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, House Call by Marshall Lawrence, a nod to Lawrence's Ph.D in Physhology and how the blues will cure your ills. . Opening with Mean Momma Blues, Lawrence wastes no time showing his acoustic guitar shops teamed up with Dave "Hurricane" Hoerl on harp. I Got To Ramble has a cool resonator slide footing and simple percussive rhythm with harp. Factory Closing Blues has a real rich vocal backing by the Holmes Brothers. Please Help Me Find My Way Home boasts an interesting melody in call and response with Hurricane on harp. Ballad Of Molly Brown is one of my favorite tracks on the release maintaining more of a rural country sound with rhythmic guitar work and percussion. Rich Man Can't Get The Blues follows the basic 12 bar format with a bit slower tempo. This is another of the standout tracks with sweet harp work from Hurricane. Lawrence does a real nice job on Tommy Johnson's Canned Heat Blues. This track is not only well executed but also possibly the best track for Lawrence on vocal. Another feature track is I Wanna Love You with basic melody and guitar work but again featuring nice harp work from Hurricane. Lawrence takes a real nice mandolin solo on this track as well. Another Saturday Night is a quiet boogie with driving guitar rhythm and super slide resonator work. Hey Girl is a real barn burner of an acoustic boogie. Topped off with Hurricane on harp, Lawrence keeps it simple and straightforward. Traditional song, Death's Black Train is a good closer for this release broken down to the simplest components but with accentuation on Dwayne Hrynkiw on drums and Barry Allen singing harmony to Lawrence on vocal.

As the Years Go Passing By - Marshall Lawrence

Marshall Lawrence (born 1956) is a Canadian acid blues musician. Lawrence is often referred to as the "Doctor of the Blues.
Lawrence became interested in rock and roll at age 10 and asked his father for a guitar. Lawrence enjoyed his Echo semi-acoustic guitar and was determined to learn how to play it, inspired by Jimi Hendrix.

Lawrence played his first gig in 1969 at Windsor, Ontario, under a band named The Peanut Gallery, playing a 1969 Gibson SG through a Fender Dual Showman blew an amp on "Johnny B. Goode." As a teen, he spent most of 1970s and 1980s exploring guitar rock styles, while he was employed at a car factory in Windsor. Later on in his life, Lawrence moved east to Kingston to pursue a Ph.D in psychology.
Lawrence mixes many styles of blues to his music. Henceforth, he is given the nickname "The Doctor of Blues." His music can be described as a fierce, energetic blend of blues, rock, soul, and funk. Together he calls it "acid blues." Another way to describe his technique is a tribute to traditional blues, but mixed with an energetic style.
