Tim Woods - For You - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, For You, by Tim Woods and its an earthy contemporary blues release. Opening with Can't Stop Rockin' with it's blend of the Doors and Ten Years After blues rock feel. Woods definitely has a Morrison vocal styling and Bobby Lee Rogers bass lines are driving. Cool opener. Another cool blues rocker, Are You Kind? has just a taste of metal but with Rogers on keys this track almost takes on a Deep Purple flavor. Mimic has a really cool, bounce to it with just the right amount of funk. Rogers' drum anchor gives Woods freedom to jam out on guitar and it's just the perfect combination of groove and lead guitar (think old Savoy Brown meets old ZZ Top). Very nice. Wrapping the release is ballad, Within, with Rogers highlighted on vocal with only the  minimal keyboard and brushed drums over his own guitar. With a solid melody and and flowing guitar lead, this is a cool closer.

Slide Records artist: Paul Boddy & The Sidewinder Blues Band - Nosy Neighbors - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Nosy Neighbors, from Paul Boddy & The Slidewinder Blues Band, and it's a cool, straightforward contemporary blues band. Opening with easy shuffle, Trouble Finds Me Everyday, Paul Boddy on lead vocal and guitar sets a solid platform, joined by Glenn Halo on keys, Chuck Hearne on bass and Dave Hollingsworth on drums. Another shuffle, Hanky Panky Blues has a real nice sway with a strong piano solo by Hale and excellent vocal by Boddy who adds some real nice slide. With it's cool Latin beat, title track, Nosy Neighbors, has strong radio appeal with a great melody, hot drum rhythm and real nice slide work by Boddy. Right Way Up is a real nice blues rocker with nice finger work by Boddy, a driving bass line by Hearne and strong backing vocals. Wrapping the release is Trash Can Head, a laid back bluesy rocker with super jammy piano by Hale, and a cool bass line by Hearne. Backing vocals aren't listed on the album, but I do think that they add nicely to Boody's smooth slide work. Solid closer.

Dustin Douglas & The Electric Gentlemen - Break It Down - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Break It Down, from Dustin Douglas & The Electric Gentlemen and it's quite cool. I've listened to this release a number of times and I keep hearing new stuff. Opening with A Little Bit, a really cool neo soul track blended strongly with raw guitar attack by Dustin Douglas, a meaty bass line by Matt Gabriel and tight drum rhythms by Tommy Smallcomb and you get something really cool. Think "D'Angelo light' jamming with David Gilmore in a modern rock band. Very cool! Destiny has an even more rocky feel almost into Living Color territory. Goodbye is another particularly interesting track with a Led Zep spin. It doesn't have the Bonzo bottom but the riffs are the children of Page and even the vocals are "Plant"ish, although Douglas' vocals are much more listenable than Plant's. Another track with a definitive Page riff and a JP Jones line is Out Of My Mind. This is a particularly interesting track with a soft underlying bass line and perfect drum timing setting up soulful vocals and guitar riffs that have Gilmore and Gibbons influences. Excellent! On Your Face Is Stunning, Douglas seems to take the band even farther into the mist with another guitar led track. Santana like riffs but Gilmore like phrasing over solid rock footings yields even yet another cool direction. Wrapping the release is No More Tears to Cry with a pure blues rocker. With a raggedy approach and fat slide guitar work, this is a solid closer for a really enjoyable release. Very nice!

Juicy Baby Records artist: Bobby Kyle - It's My Life - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, It's My Life, from Bobby Kyle and it's a cool, R&B style rocker. Opening with Johnny Copeland's Daily Bread, Bobby Kyle shows his unique styling in vocal and guitar, backed by Everett Boyd on bass, Joel Perry on guitar, Marc Copell on drums, and Dave Keyes on keys. Driftwood has an almost Allman feel is their early, era. Kyle's vocals are solid and Keyes' accordion work gives it a totally different sound. Soul ballad, Highway Man, is one of my favorite tracks on the release with smooth pace, tension and solid horn backing by Laron Land on tenor sax, Alex Harding on bari sax, and James Smith on trumpet. Radio strong track, Blood From A Stone, is another of my favorites with solid soul roots and super horn backing. Sax solos from Land and Harding as well as a nice trumpet line from Smith give this track a cool edge.  Eddie Kirkland's I've Got My Bloodshot Eye's On You is a simple acoustic blues number with Kyle and Perry on guitar, Joey Simon on harp and solid vocals by Kyle. Tripping Out is a real nice R&B track with a light Latin flavor. Copell's percussion work along with Keyes' tight key work really sets the stage for some of Kyle's best vocals on the release. Wrapping the release is Robert Jr. Lockwood's Little Boy Blue performed by Kyle solo on resonator guitar and vocal. This is a super closer for a real enjoyable release.

Jeff Fetterman - 9 Miles To Nowhere - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, 9 Miles To Nowhere, by Jeff Fetterman, and it's quite good! Opening with funky blues rocker, Somebody Get Me A Doctor, Fetterman on lead guitar and vocals sets a great stage. With a nice groove and solid vocals, backed by Eric Brewer on guitars, Ralph Reitnger III on bass, John McGuire on drums and Judy Kessler on vocal and percussion, this band is rocking. Nice round tone opens Something Just Ain't Right and the stomping woodblock snap is pure magic. Brand New Day has a tight, thumping bottom and a real good blues rock feel. Fetterman's sense for dynamics is nice with compressed neck pickup picking balanced with open bridge soloing. Goodbye John Brown has a snappy drum riff that really delivers for me and Fetterman's slide works nicely with his rugged vocals. The smoothest track on the release is Broken Hearted, T-Bone Walker progression, just set up for perfectly for lead guitar soloing. A real nice track. With the Sonny Boy Williamson or Booker T groove, Early Grave has a super base for strong vocals and kicking guitar riffs. Wrapping the release is blues ballad, These Arms Of Mine, with is warm melody, solid vocals and fluid and well placed guitar soloing. Very nice closer.

Charlie Wheeler Band - Blues Karma and the Kitchen Sink - New Release Review

I just received the newest release (October 7, 2016), Blues Karma and the Kitchen Sink, from Charlie Wheeler Band and it's an interesting mix of contemporary music. Opening with pop rocker, People Keep On Talkin', Charlie Wheeler who leads on vocal and guitar sets the pace and Dave Fink and Rad Akers hold down the bottom on bass and drums respectively. Tight. On Shiver, I really like the plucky bass lines of Fink on this spacey rocker. One Of These Days has a little bit of country flare with traces of the Doobies. Certain radio track with a good hook and snappy drums. One of my favorite tracks on the release, Flicker Away, has a heavy footed rock beat with it's feet in the blues. With solid vocals, a good hook and slick guitar work, this track is tops. Promise of Daylight is another track that catches my attention with hot guitar riffs and a real nice bass line. Wheeler's vocals are spot on giving this track multi station appeal. Another blues rocker, Love You The Same, has a real nice recurring guitar riff in the style of Jimi. Wrapping the release is Butterfly, a pop rocker with a slight funky back beat. Wheeler's guitar riffs are rowdy yet polished and with his certain lead vocals and tight bottom, this track is a super closer.

Jeff Fetterman - Bottle Full Of Blues - New release review

I just received the newest release, Bottle Full Of Blues, from Jeff Fetterman Band and it's quite good! Opening with Paradise, influences of Jimi Hendrix and Texas blues guitarists are readily apparent. Strong driving guitar riffs by Fetterman on the intro develop into a cool funky groove with John McGuire on drums, Ralph Reitinger III on bass and Anthony Brown on keys. This track has a lot of fluidity and Fetterman is definitely comfortable leading this groove. Very nice! On Out Of Time a Bo Diddley beat is twisted with a Texas blues funk. I particularly like the bass growl of Reitinger. Brown steps up with a blanketing keyboard solo and a nice opening for Fetterman to lay out his guitar chops and Judy Kessler, Amy Shallenberger and Bea Antonelli sing precise backing vocals. Southbound has a driving blues rock beat with riding harp work from Otis James. Strongly blended lead and backing vocals as well as a strong melody make this on the the prime radio style tracks on the release. Title track, Bottle Full Of Blues, has a smooth, sultry blues feel highlighting Fetterman's vocals. Nicely constructed and executed, Fetterman plays Gary Moore style, melodic guitar solo lines highlighting the tension of the track. Very nice! Funky Candy puts me in mind of old Isley Brothers with it's guitar intro. A nice blend of vocals with Fetterman, Shallenberger, Kessler and Antonelli, a Prestonesque organ solo from Brown and solid bass lines from Reitinger gives this track an extra spark. Devil's Shuffle is a slick and quick 12 bar number with just a pinch of country. Loosely based on Freddie King's Hideaway and with crisp harp work from James, a tight guitar solo from Fetterman, a rolling piano solo from Brown and a rumbling bass solo from Reitinger, this is a cool instrumental. Talk To Me is an easy rocker with a clever hook. With traces of the Doobie Brothers with it's devilish drumming and clean guitar solos paired with warm backing vocals this track has certain radio potential. The intro on Down & Out has a really cool sound with guitar drone notes and James on harp giving it a pure blues feel. Adding on a Skynyrd swagger, funky shoes and blues harp and the track has a whole different dimension. Fetterman plays one of his longer and more stinging guitar solo's on the release making it one of my favorites on the release. Wash My Blues Away is a warm friendly track with traces of Doobies with it's catchy hook. Brown and Fetterman blend nicely instrumentally and Fetterman's lead vocals, coupled with the smooth backing by Kessler, Shallenberger and Antonelli make for one of the strongest vocal tracks. Wrapping the release is T-Bone & The Ghost. This is a smokin' jam between Reitinger on bass and McGuire on drums...I love it!

Billy The Kid & The Regulators - I Can't Change - New release review

I just received the newest release, I Can't Change from Billy The Kid & The Regulators and it's quite good! Coming out of the gate with title track, I Can't Change, Billy and the Regulators hit the funky groove with Reggie Watkins on trombone, Rick Matt on sax and JD Chasin on trumpet. Billy Evanochko, Jon Vallecorsa and James Dougherty on guitar and vocals lead the way and Yolanda Barber's complimentary backing vocals are excellent! Arnold Stagger on bass and Brian Edwards on drums really anchor the bottom and stylized guitar soloing tops this super opener! On Ain't Gotta Prove Nothing, Billy leads the way vocally and with voracious guitar work. Another track with a serious funky feel driven by Stagger, this track moves! Radio styled, R&B ballad, What Are We Fighting For has a catchy melody and warm horn work, nicely complimented by Dougherty's singing slide work. R&B styling on Story of the Blues suits this band well. This is a tight track with a clean jazzy guitar solo and nice key work from Ublai Bey. Twelve bar number, Who, opens with a nice Freddie King style guitar intro and rumbles with a southern blues rock feel. Featuring Jason Ricci on harp and Evanochko on Elmore James style riffs over Bey's key work, this track is a nice blues rocker. That Darn Cat has a funky jazz feel and a cool slinky beat. Choice harp riffs from Ricci and warm vocal injections from Barber are a perfect compliment to the lead almost rap like lead vocal. Dougherty lays down some real nice Little Feat like slide work on Edwards' funky rhythm giving this track a cool vibe. Slow blues number, Slender Man Blues, features prime lead vocal work from Billy and clean piano work from Bey. Billy steps up with some of the hottest guitar riffs on the session pushed ever higher by Watkins, Matt and Chasin. Barber's warm backing on this track is effective in a totally different way showing her absolute versatility. Very cool! On Jimmy Reed's Can't Stand To See You Go, the band maintains the standard JR feel. Ricci nicely adds with his harp work and it's vocal harmonies with Billy's solid leads that sets this track apart. Saturday Night is a high energy rocker along the lines of Radar Love. Never venturing far from the blues format, it's the driving bass line of Stagger that kicks this track and the super harp work of Ricci, the organ work of Bey and the sweet vocal blending of Barber, Evanochko, Vallecorsa, Dougherty, Edwards and Bey that make it sing. A guitar guitar shootout featuring Damon Fowler and Sean Carney is a nice treat on this track as well. Wrapping the release is Robert Johnson's Me And The Devil Blues. With a much more stripped down approach of vocal, guitar and harp on this track, it makes for a very nice closer or a real nice release!

Minnie The Moocher - The Fabulous Booze Brothers Show Band and Revue

Ted (Bundy) and Andy (Shack) have been talking about doing a Blues Brothers tribute for the past 20 years or so. Finally, one night over a couple of beers they decided to move forward with the project. They called their old "bandmates" from previous projects: Brian Solomon, David Schroeder (Schro) and Kurt Fleckenstein (Jorge) who were instantly on board and excited. After two years of changes in the horn section due to folks moving for jobs or leaving for Afghanistan (and thankfully returning home safe and sound), the Booze Brothers are happy to present Brian Dahm, Jeremy Ketter, Marty Herchko, Greg Sloan and Dan Rusnak as the horn line up for this project. The band rounded it out and added Rich Risnear on keys in February of 2014. Our love of the music the Blues Brothers band has produced (or reproduced) has brought us together. We hope you share our love for this timeless music and enjoy our shows as much as we enjoy performing for you. EVERYBODY GET RIPPED!!!!!!

Dan Bubien - Empty Roads - New Release Review

I just received a new release, Empty Roads, from Dan Bubien. It's not often that I get to review an artist from my original hometown, Pittsburgh Pa. but it's a solid pleasure when I do...and the music is great! Bubien presents not only a pleasant rack of tunes but a strong voice and great instrumentation. This release is a bit more "popular" sounding than I typically listen to but it's always cool when musical strength, catchy tunes and vibrant grooves collide. Opening with the title track, Empty Roads, a funky, Little Featesque, track with strong vocals and cool guitar. Excellent start. The guitar work on this track is straight forward and interesting exhibiting solid chops. Fight Club pulls even more funk with Andy Taravella on drums, Gary Ripper on bass, Timmy Mabin on keys, Jonathan Vallecorsa on guitar, and especially Eric DeFade on sax. Crazy Days really has a strong Philly sound (the other side of the state) and I really like it. If you don't know the Philly sound, it's also called blue eyed soul. Excellent! Andre Marocco adds backing vocals to this track, a key component to the authentic sound. Exile Blues is a nice light 12 bar number and includes the addition of Chris Nacy on harp and a nice clean piano solo by Mabin. Slide work by Bubien adds a vocal warmth to the easy going track. To Youngstown has a distinctive Little Feat feel to it and a touch of Traveling Riverside Blues. Really cool track. Dizzy Eyes is an uptempo R&B style track with a load of horns by Steve McKnight (trumpet) and Eric De Fade and backing vocal by Jimmie Ross, Morgan Maybray and Marocco. Joe Monroe lays down a nice organ solo on this track and the push is all JB's. Irony is another strong R&B style track and a solid hit coming. Bubien has a definite knack for melody and DeFade and McKnight add warmth to the bottom. A super stinging guitar solo by Bubien is a terrific compliment to his excellent vocals. keep Love In Mind is another sweet Philly love song (straight out of Pittsburgh). Bubien is just waiting for the ear because the music is absolutely here. Do you even kind of like Daryl Hall? How about Smokey Robinson? You'll love this guy! Sniper is an easy going blues track with a country feel. Marocco adding vocal backing and Justin Stagg adding banjo along with Bubien's slide work make this a smart ending to a really cool release.

Get It From Me - Sarah Ayers Band

The Sarah Ayers Band began cooking up their unique blend of blues, funk, and rock on a cold Tuesday night in January ‘02 as the hosts of a brand new blues jam in Macungie, PA as Sarah’s Rhythm Recipe. Little did they know that less than a month later their little blues jam would be the hottest jam in the Valley. Since that time, the group has branched out to become one of the valley’s best blues bands. Their spicy recipe for funky, kick-ass, butt-shaking blues has rocketed them right through the usual rites of passage for a new blues band, peforming at the Lehigh Valley Blues and Jazz Festival, competing in the regional International Blues Challenge, and performing in the Best of the Lehigh Valley Festival. Sarah has been awarded Best Female Vocalist at the Lehigh Valley Music Awards every year since 2003. In each year she has also taken home additional awards in other categories, including: best original band, best blues vocalist, best all around performer, and best original song “Body Says Yes”. In January ‘07, the band released their second CD, 3 AM EPIPHANY.

Phyllis Hyman & Angela Bofill

Phyllis Linda Hyman (July 6, 1949 – June 30, 1995) was an American singer-songwriter and actress. Phyllis Hyman was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the St. Clair Village, the South Hills section of Pittsburgh. Born to an African American family, she was the eldest of seven children and a third cousin of actor Earle Hyman (best known for his recurring role on TV's The Cosby Show as Cliff's father, Russell Huxtable). After leaving Pittsburgh, her music training started at a music school. On graduation, she performed on a national tour with the group New Direction in 1971. After the group disbanded, she joined All the People and worked with another local group, The Hondo Beat. At this time, she appeared in the film Lenny (1974). She also did a two-year stint leading a band called Phyllis Hyman and the P/H Factor. Hyman was discovered in 1975 by internationally known pop artist and music industry veteran Sid Maurer, and former Epic Records promoter Fred Frank, and signed to their Roadshow Records/Desert Moon imprint. Hyman moved to New York City to work on her reputation. She did background vocals on Jon Lucien's Premonition and worked in clubs. In 1975 when Norman Connors was laying tracks for "You are My Starship" (1976) he could not get permission to use Jean Carne for the album and had heard about Phyllis Hyman, who was working at a club on the upper Westside of Manhattan. One night after a Jon Lucien concert at Carnegie Hall he went to see Phyllis perform and offered her a spot as the female vocalist on his fourth album for Buddah Records. Once the title song got airplay on Jazz radio, "Starship" went gold, catapulting Phyllis' career along with Norman Connors and Michael Henderson to new heights. R&B radio jumped on board and Norman and Phyllis scored on the R&B charts with a remake of The Stylistics' "Betcha by Golly Wow!". Hyman sang with Pharoah Sanders and the Fatback Band while working on her first solo album, Phyllis Hyman, released in 1977 on the Buddah Records label. When Arista Records bought Buddha, she was transferred to that label. Her first album for Arista, Somewhere in My Lifetime, was released in 1978; the title track was produced by then-labelmate Barry Manilow. Her follow-up album, You Know How to Love Me, made the R&B Top 20 and also performed well on the club–dance charts. In the late 1970s, Hyman married her manager Larry Alexander (who is the brother of Jamaican pianist and melodica player Monty Alexander), but both the personal and professional associations ended in divorce. Around this time, Hyman began using cocaine, which led to a lifelong dependency. Hyman's first solo Top Ten hit came in 1981 with "Can't We Fall In Love Again", a duet with Michael Henderson. The song was recorded while she was performing in the Broadway musical Sophisticated Ladies, a tribute to Duke Ellington. She performed in the role for almost two years, receiving a Tony Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical and winning a Theatre World Award for Best Newcomer. Problems between Hyman and her label, Arista, caused a pause in her recording career. She used the time to appear on movie soundtracks, television commercials and guest vocals, working with Chuck Mangione, The Whispers and The Four Tops. Hyman provided vocals for three tracks on jazz pianist McCoy Tyner's Looking Out (1982). She toured often and did a college lecture tour. In 1983, Hyman recorded the song "Never Say Never Again" as the title song for the James Bond movie of the same name, written by Stephen Forsyth and Jim Ryan. However, Warner Brothers informed Forsyth that Michel Legrand, who wrote the score for the film, had threatened to sue them, claiming he contractually had the rights to the title song. An alternate title song composed by Legrand was eventually used for the film and performed by singer Lani Hall, formerly of Sérgio Mendes and Brasil '66. Free from Arista in 1985, she released the album, Living All Alone on Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International label the following year, capitalizing on the torch songs, "Old Friend" and the melancholy title track, as well as "You Just Don't Know" and "Screaming at the Moon". In 1987, Phyllis Hyman recorded "Black and Blue" as a duet with Barry Manilow on his 1987 Swing Street Arista album. Manilow was a long time admirer of Phyllis and her work. Shortly afterwards, she appeared in the films School Daze and The Kill Reflex. She would also continue to lend her voice to albums for other artists and musicians like Grover Washington, Jr. and Lonnie Liston Smith, while at the same time doing international tours. Her next album, again on Philadelphia International, called Prime of My Life, released in 1991, was the biggest of her career. It included her first number one R&B hit as well as her first Billboard Top 100 hit, "Don't Wanna Change the World". The album provided two more top 10 R&B singles in "Living in Confusion" and "When You Get Right Down to It", and the less successful "I Found Love". Just over a year later, she appeared one last time on a Norman Connors album, singing the title song, "Remember Who You Are", which became a minor R&B hit. Prime of My Life has sold 454,000 copies to date. The album and debut single were both RIAA certified Gold in 1992. Hyman's last album, I Refuse to Be Lonely, was a journey into her personal life. Both the title track and the single "I'm Truly Yours" became minor R&B hits. On the afternoon of June 30, 1995, Hyman committed suicide by overdosing on pentobarbital and secobarbital in the bedroom of her New York City apartment at 211 West 56th Street. She was found unconscious at 2pm, hours before she was scheduled to perform at the Apollo Theater and died three hours later at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital. Her suicide note read in part: "I'm tired. I'm tired. Those of you that I love know who you are. May God bless you." She was 45 years old. A memorial service was held at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Manhattan. The following week would have been her 46th birthday

Seven Thunders - Rob Carlton Band

Have you heard of this guitar wiz from East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania that goes by the name of Rob Carlton? If not, get ready for the blazing hot sound of RC as he excites the world with his phenomenal playing skills. Originally from Long Island, NY, this guitarist is no stranger to the music game as he has played in many bands over the years. One band in particular, Empyre, helped Rob gain more notoriety and exposure early on his career. This band had the pleasure of opening up for and touring with such acts as: Cinderella, Zebra, Blue Oyster Cult among others. Fun times for Carlton & company during those Empyre years, but the journey was far from over. Three albums later after leaving Empyre, Rob decided to start a new band titled Sevenfold. He would go on to tour big Christian festivals such as SuperFest traveling all over the United States. From there, it was time for Rob to make some music of his own as a recording solo artist. The first solo album recorded would be called A Time Such As This followed by Unshackled and finally Beautiful Collision. His most recent record, Beautiful Collision, was released in 2009 and offers up some of Rob Carltonfs finest work yet. On this cut, Carlton plays his guitar with such ease and precision. You can really sense that Rob was meant to pick up a guitar at the age of 12 and play on. He has a natural ability and an incredible talent that can be appreciated by millions everywhere. Standing in the shadows of his own personal guitar idol, Jimi Hendrix, Rob has thrived at perfecting his music throughout the years. Living up to the reputation and greatness of Jimi Hendrix may not be an easy task but I would say Rob Carlton is doing a pretty damn good job in his own right. I honestly think Jimi would be proud of Robfs accomplishments as a guitar player and I feel RC would receive a Jimi Hendrix seal of approval. Rob is representing the instrument very well and for all you inspiring guitarists out there; you might want to take notes because this man is the real deal. Dedication is a major factor in the life and times of Rob Carlton. When he was younger, he would play his red Stella guitar until his fingers bled for crying out loud! If thatfs not dedication & commitment, then I donft know what is! This incredible will and strife to want to do nothing else but hit those strings continues on today for Rob. This musician has such tenacity and drive when it comes to picking up his guitar and playing the hell out of it. To RC, the guitar is more than just a stringed instrument; it is a crucial part of who he is. Rob is so consumed with his trusty sidekick that in a sense he becomes one with the almighty guitar. The guitar completes him and he completes the guitar as they live happily ever after. Rob Carlton himself said it best when he stated during our interview for Skopemag.com that: "I can see myself someday like 95 sitting with a lot of guitars playing my Taylor guitar just enjoying the peace guitar can bring to you in this sometimes crazy world". This guy truly loves playing and I donft think there is anything that can stop this intense passion. There is no holding back Carlton as he rolls forward and unleashes his insane skills for the whole wide world to hear. Over time, RC has accomplished a lot as a music artist and also picked up some well-deserved achievements along the way. Rob has been a member of ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) in which he has won many awards for. Carlton has endorsement deals with: GHS Strings, Morley Pedals, Halo Guitars, Specraflex Cables and Rocktron Amps & Effects. Rob has also been featured in such magazines as: Guitar World, Guitar Player, Burn, Kerrang!, Circus & Good Times. Rob has a 2010 tour kicking off in April in NYC at Uncle Mikefs and UC Lounge. He will also be playing at the big NAMM show in California and he "hopes to see everyone there!" A lot of excitement surrounds this artist as the Rob Carlton buzzzz is about to blow up big time. It seems that Robfs "futurefs so bright hefs just gotta wear shades!" Robfs very first album was titled Going All The Way and the latest release titled Beautiful Collision makes perfect sense now. Carlton knew all along that he, his music and his guitar were going all the way to the top by way of a beautiful collision of sound, heart, devotion & determination. This all adds up to the present status of Rob Carlton blending together his rock, classic rock grooves, blues and acoustic jams. Don Henley once sang "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" and now I say All He Wants To Do Is PlaycPlay. If youfre not a fan already, then you surely will be after hearing the amazing solos and sensational guitar presence.

VizzTone Label Group artist: Gina Sicilia - It Wasn't Real - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, It Wasn't Real, from Gina Sicilia. Sicilia has a rich voice and a smooth delivery. Opening with the title track, It Wasn't Real, Sicilia delivers a sultry pop jazz track with nice sax work backing by Jay Davidson. Next up is a track that I became familiar with through my love for James Brown. This has a totally different feel with a more laid back swing type groove. Davidson again steps up with a sweet solo. Walkin Along The Avenue has a distinct 40's sound and possibly the coolest track on the release. Dennis Gruenling plays some really complimentary harp on this track and Joel Bryant adds a nice B3 line. City By The Water is a strong radio play track with a real bluesy feel. Davidson again gets the chance to shine with a real solid sax solo. The release is wrapped with country influenced Walkin' Shoes. Overall this release will appeal to a more adult audience with strong pop melodic tendencies. It is very well done.

Messin with the Kid--Riley Road

What started as an experiment has developed into the area's most dynamic blues rock trio. By skillfully weaving point and counter-point into “off measure” time signatures, Nick Cianci, Brandon Walker and Isaiah Weatherspoon make up the band known as RILEY ROAD. From three different school districts, RILEY ROAD’s members were brought together through the efforts of Erin Riley, founder of Phoenixville’s Rock and Roll After School (RRAS) program. Drummer Isaiah Weatherspoon and bassist Brandon Walker joined with Nick Cianci, a long time student of the Downingtown School of Rock, in Fall 2010 to form a blues rock based trio. The diversity of these three students is their greatest strength, with each one bringing a different skill and perspective to the band. On lead guitar and vocals, Nick Cianci channels the spirit of many of the great blues artists of the past. Close your eyes and you will hear Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, B.B. King and Buddy Guy. From a blistering fury of guitar riffs to the controlled patience of a single sustained note, Nick combines his many influences into his own unique sound. Building the foundation to support this energy is the rock solid rhythm section held together by bassist Brandon Walker and Isaiah Weatherspoon on the drums. Isaiah’s proficiently executed, syncopated fills reminiscent of the likes of Simon Phillips or Steve Gadd, are complimented by the thunderous bass line of Brandon Walker, ala the great Jack Bruce. RILEY ROAD has successfully broken into the suburban Philadelphia music circuit with their masterful combination of original music and carefully selected cover material. Be prepared to be “blown away” by this energetic trio. Look for RILEY ROAD coming to a venue near you.

Who Owns The Joint - Johnny Sparrow

After playing with Louis Armstrong and Lionel Hampton's bands in the mid-'40s, sax player Johnny Sparrow formed his own band, Johnny Sparrow and His Bows and Arrows. The group was based in Philly in the early 1950s, and signed to Gotham Records in 1952.
