Thirty Tigers artist: Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band - Dance Songs For Hard Times - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Dance Songs For Hard Times (April 9, 2021), from Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band and it's gritty and solid. Opening with Ways and Means, with it's raw, Hill Country like sound. Peyton on lead vocal and guitar and backed by Breezy Peyton on washboard, percussion and vocal and Sad Max Senteney on drums, percussion and vocal, this track has real stones. It's primitive rhythm and sparse instrumentation, it's what blues is all about. Excellent opener. Rocker, Rattle Can is propelled by slide guitar and driving percussion. Peyton really winds it out on this one and his call response with Breezy is terrific.  No Tellin' When, a real blues, with authentic style vocals and guitar percussion is the real deal. This is the kind of track that reflects the real power in the Son House and Lightning Hopkins recordings. Very nice. Sad Song not only has the grit of original blues but also the undercut funk of Little Feat but way underplayed. With vocal work by the Peytons and Senteney and the Rev's slide work against the stiff percussion, another solid track. Cool boogie track, Nothing's Easy But You and Me has a great tempo and driving slide. Super track. Wrapping the release is Come Down Angels, a high energy, spiritual sparked track with shared vocal lead with Breezy and lively slide work. This is a hot release that should appeal to most lovers of hard line blues and folk style music.

Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band releases new video for "One More Thing"

REVEREND PEYTON’S BIG DAMN BAND RELEASES NEW VIDEO FOR “ONE MORE THING” New CD Front Porch Sessions debuts at #1 on the iTunes Blues charts and at #2 on the Billboard Blues charts, just behind the Rolling Stones. BROWN COUNTY, Ind. — “One More Thing” is the latest video from Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band’s new Thirty Tigers release Front Porch Sessions. The Reverend speaks for the working class in this haunting, politically aware song about living paycheck to paycheck. He shows a new depth in his songwriting and a social consciousness in the tradition of Guthrie, Springsteen and Mellencamp. The Reverend recently explained, “The song isn't a response to any one thing. It’s just words I’ve had to live from time to time in my life. Words a lot of my neighbors are living right now. A lot of Americans are suffering." The video was shot on the front porch at Reverend Peyton’s home in Brown County, Indiana and the videography production and editing was done by Tyler Zoller.   Front Porch Sessions was released March 10 and debuted at #1 on the iTunes Blues chart displacing the Rolling Stones from top spot. The following week it debuted at #2 on the Billboard Blues charts (the Rolling Stones charted #1.) The band is currently on a world tour that lasts this whole year. REVEREND PEYTON’S BIG DAMN BAND RELEASES NEW VIDEO  FOR “WE DESERVE A HAPPY ENDING” Fresh off of viral shotgun guitar video that reached 20 million plus, Rev. Peyton literally sets his best friend on fire in new music video.

BROWN COUNTY, Ind. — Rev. Peyton, known for his viral shotgun guitar video and virtuosic slide guitar, is back! This time Rev literally sets his best friend on fire, and all hell breaks loose behind Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band as they perform “We Deserve a Happy Ending” on their own front porch in the new video from the upcoming March 10, 2017 album release Front Porch Sessions.  "We researched these dangerous Hollywood-style stunts and my best friend, Jim Connor, volunteered to let me set him on fire inside my house,” says Rev. Peyton. All of these people, animals, and machinery were all packed inside of Rev. and Breezy’s tiny cabin in the Brown County Hills. “These folks are just our friends and family,” Rev. Peyton says. “We are lucky to be surrounded by hillbillies, performers, artists, daredevils, and adventurers.” With almost no budget, this video is one continuous camera shot and was captured by Rev’s good pal and photographer Tyler Zoller in one take. It’s all DIY, but all the proper precautions were taken. Rev. urges people not to try this at home, especially if you live in a wood house.  Washboard Breezy, Rev. Peyton’s wife and band member, says, “The song is stripped down, Maxwell Senteney plays a suitcase just like on the record, but it sounds huge.” “It’s all about the vocals,” Rev. BROWN COUNTY, Ind. — Southern Indiana-bred singer-guitarist Reverend Peyton is the bigger-than-life frontman of Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band. He has earned a reputation as both a singularly compelling performer and a persuasive evangelist for the rootsy country blues styles that captured his imagination early in life and inspired him and his band to make pilgrimages to Clarksdale, Mississippi to study under such blues masters as T-Model Ford, Robert Belfour and David “Honeyboy” Edwards. That passionate inspiration has made Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band America’s foremost country blues outfit and fuels the Rev’s new release, The Front Porch Sessions. Shanachie/Yazoo Records artist: The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band - So Delicious - New Release Review

I just received the newest release (February 17, 2015), So Delicious, from the Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band and is quirky and cool. Opening with stripped down rocker, Let's Jump A Train it has the makings of classic rocker Born To Be Wild. With a driving rimshot by Birddog Bussell and rocking guitar riffs by Rev Peyton, this track rocks. Pot Roast and Kisses has a twist of country rock and a lighter touch but still a bright vibrancy with a rolling finger style guitar riff by the Rev. Dirt has a gritty, swampy feel ... a modern blues style. I really like Peyton's vocals on this track which he also nicely compliments with his slide work. This is one of my favorites on the release. Raise A Little Hell is a foot stompin' raw, sliding track with military like cadence drumming by Bussell and washboard by Breezy Peyton. Very cool! Scream At The Night is a rambling country blues style track with really nicely articulated acoustic guitar, harp and percussion. Peyton harmonizes nicely with Breezy and Bussell. A strong track with a catchy melody with strong cross air potential. Hell Naw has strong blues roots and nice acoustic slide work. Peyton shows strong vocal control and accompanying himself on harp and slide this is a cool track. Front Porch Trained is another track with a really stripped down feel. With thin slide guitar work and minimal percussion accompaniment, this track really captures the feel of hill country blues. Sweet. Picking Paw Paws is a really simplified blues track with finger picked guitar, washboard and minimal drums. Primitive blues in modern times. We Live Dangerous is a hot slide number with a lot of oomph. Peyton drives this train with his relentless slide style and Bussell just sits on the beat pushing him the entire way. Excellent! You're Not Rich has some of the nicest resonator work on the release with a lonesome sound and nice melody. Wrapping the release is Music and Friends with a nod to Libba Cotten. A nice rolling finger picking riff and snappy drum work complimented by Peyton and friends on vocal makes for a consistent conclusion to a pretty cool release.
