I just received the newest release, She Put The Voodoo On Me, from Khalif Wailin' Walter and it's a funky blues blast! Opening with Let 'em in... Walter opens the flood gates for a funk infused blues party. With his unusual vocal style and horns blazing, Walter plucks out super guitar riffs and Alex Showtime Lex sets up a great drum beat. Mo "Mr Mo" Fuhrhop is right in the groove with the B3 and Boney Fields punctuates the top with trumpet. Super track! Ghost Train sets up a bit like Golden Earring with a driving rhythm and a cool boogie jam ensues. Mr Mo and Walter trade lead riffs and Erkan Ozdemir keeps the drive alive on bass. I'm Your Love Doctor is a raw, 12 bar blues with a lot of sting. Walter gets a good grip ion his ax and doesn't let go. Real nice! Next up is Big-bootyed Woman, a fun party blues with traditional bones and cookin guitar riffs. This track has a hard driving bass line by Ozdemir but it's the lyrics here that make this song fun. Title track, She Put The Voodoo On Me, is really funky and has that New Orleans feel. I really like the bass riffs on this track and Walter digs in for some hot guitar runs on this track as well. I Got My Own Kinda Groove has a much looser jazz feel but still with blues roots. Walter makes you sweat with stinging guitar riffs on this track, bass is handled by Daniel The Funk Machine Hopf and drums by Lukas Kochbeck. Mr Mo rides the organ for a cool B3 outro. On slow blues, My Guitar and These Blues, Walter really digs in deep pulling out some great greasy licks. The singing on this track really remind me of Mike Bloomfield on some of his earlier work. Taking jazz chord progressions over the blues bass and really just screaming his lead work, this is a really special track! Funky track, I Need A New Job, is a high stepper with cowbell... yeah! Hopf sets up nicely on his bass and Mr Mo keeps it together on B3 but Tommy Schneller stands out with an exceptional sax solo. Still You Stand has a R&B feel leading back to a bit of a War feel with the horns. Cool radio style track. Turning to a more subtle guitar soloing style Walter shows control and stays within himself. Supercalifunkin' Groovy has a bit of a funky jazz style again one that could easily fit the airwaves. A hard wired building guitar solo caps this track off and gives Walter a chance to spread his wings a bit in a different style. Du heiBt Cowlahn ... (Prayer for Michael Jackson) is a cool fusion style track and Hopf lays down a really nice bass line for riff trades between Walter and Mr Mo. This track is a great track to finish up the release, with a little jazz, a bit of funk and a lot of guitar.
This is a cd that you should check out.

I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!
