Pure, haunting, meditative, somber, simple and classic: The Everly
Brothers’ 1958 Songs Our Daddy Taught Us made a seminal artistic statement
without pretension. A concept album before there was such thing; a return to
basics before rock music had even matured. It all came naturally to Don and Phil
Everly, the chart-topping brothers, recording stars aged just 21 and 19
respectively.
Every extant session tape from the August 1958 sessions
for Songs Our Daddy Taught Us was reviewed for this reissue. Alternate takes of
four of the songs – “Roving Gambler,” “Down In The Willow Garden,”
“Barbara Allen,” and “Put My Little Shoes Away” – were selected as bonus tracks
and are all, heretofore, unissued. Of particular note are rough early takes of
“Down In The Willow Garden,” the first of which shows producer Archie
Bleyer experimenting with incorporating electric instrumentation into the
sessions. Bleyer ultimately thought the better of it and stayed true to the
original concept of presenting the songs and performances in their purest
form.
