ShrapnelRecords artists: HBC - Self Titled - New Release review

I just received the newest release from super group HBC and it's really "super". Guitarist Scott Henderson, bassist Jeff Berlin and Drummer Dennis Chambers have put together 9 great tracks, 2 originals and 7 by fusion legends, creating a really notable release. Opening with Herbie Hancock's Actual Proof, the band wastes no time demonstrating both individual talent and the cohesiveness of the band. This 10 plus minute excursion gives each band member the opportunity to shine but the mix is so clean that each player is distinctively apparent even when not soloing. Wayne Shorter's Mysterious Traveller develops a really cool funk groove featuring Henderson's slick soloing efforts. Chambers and Berlin both add substantially to the construction without a wasted note. I particularly like Chambers time change on his own solo with Berlin holding down the original rhythm of the track. Excellent! Joe Zawinul's D Flat Waltz is a perfect choice for this trio providing a cool platform for Berlin to play lead bass in contrast with Henderson on guitar. Henderson plays some beautifully outrageous runs on this track and Chambers never get lost in the mix. Zawinul's Orphan again gives Berlin a nice platform for some solo lead bass over an ethereal synthesized guitar. HBC original Wayward Son Of Devil Boy is straight up blues with Henderson just ripping a hole in the ozone. Threedom, written by Berlin, is a masterful classical bass solo. Very nice. The recording concludes with Billy Cobham's Stratus. I still remember when this song was first released and have always thought that it was an extremely strong composition. It has recently been covered by numerous players and done well. HBC keeps the bass and drum rhythm but the guitar melody is substantially altered from any that I have heard. Again, Henderson shows his fretboard fluidity and musical creativity in molding this track into something unique. Lesser artists would rename this track and claim it their for their own.
If you like fusion, or are looking for a new taste of something different...this is a good place to look!

Tracer was voted third place in Planet Rock’s “Best New Band” listeners’ poll. Over the past year Planet Rock has played the singles Too Much, Devil Ride, and Spaces In Between – all taken from Tracer’s critically acclaimed debut album Spaces in Between.
Tracer has captured the excitement and adrenalin rush of rock’n’roll. Their sound embodies the same raw dynamics and edge to that of Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age and Black Sabbath.  The band recently recruited new bass guitarist, Pat Saracino, who replaced original member Leigh Brown.
With the release of Spaces in Between, Tracer has attracted rave reviews and interviews in Classic Rock (New Band of the Month), Total Guitar, Metal Hammer, Rock Sound, Guitarist, Fireworks and Powerplay. Their video for Too Much has attracted over 100,000 YouTube views.
In the tradition of 3-piece rock bands like Rush and Muse, Tracer’s sound is the audio equivalent to Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now set inside the eye of an unstoppable hurricane.
Hailing from Adelaide, South Australia, Tracer embrace a sonic sledgehammer sound steeped in epic guitars, thunderous riffs and raw, uncompromising vocals. Their Australian blend of 90’s stoner and 70’s classic rock continues to win them new fans and turn heads.
When Tracer supported Royal Republic on their 2011 European tour, it soon became evident that Tracer was the band to watch. When the UK’s premiere classic rock radio station, Planet Rock, started playing the band’s rock anthem Too Much, listeners responded, and posted messages on the Too Much YouTube video wall by saying, “Planet Rock brought me here.”

Rising from the ashes of blues prodigy band The Brown Brothers in 2004, Michael (vocals, guitar) and Leigh Brown (vocals, bass) teamed up with drummer Andre Wise to form Tracer.
The following years have seen the trio find success with two independent releases; two international tours, including support slots for Little Red, Children Collide, The John Steel Singers and Cassette Kids.
Following a debut European tour in late 2009, Tracer returned overseas in September 2010 to take a coveted showcase slot at Germany’s PopKomm Music Conference in Berlin. The band embarked on a string of dates throughout Germany, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK, taking time off only to sign a record deal with Cool Green Recordings, a sub label of the Mascot Label Group.

Upon returning to Adelaide, the band headed straight into the studio, and recorded what was to be their debut album, Spaces in Between, released October 2011.
TRACER - OFFICIAL BIOGRAPHY
With a sound reminiscent of 90′s grunge/stoner rock mixed with the everlasting bravado of 70s classic rock, Tracer is a driving, sonic sledgehammer of massive guitars, clever hooks and raw uncompromising vocals.
Forming out of the ashes of blues prodigy band The Brown Brothers in 2004, Michael (Vocals and guitar) and Leigh Brown (Vocals and Bass) teamed up with drummer Andre Wise to make Tracer.
With two independent releases, two international tours and now a record contract under their belt, Tracer is a band that takes every little chance, every crazy idea, and commits everything they have to it.
During 2008 and 2009 Tracer took on an extensive touring schedule with multiple trips to Melbourne, a string of successful Adelaide shows including a capacity crowd at the Australian album launch for their second critically acclaimed mini-album “L.A.?”

2009 also saw the band share the stage with Little Red, Children Collide, The John Steel Singers and Cassette Kids among others. In late 2009 Tracer set off and toured Europe for three and a half months taking in Germany, the Netherlands, U.K., Denmark, Switzerland and Czech. Tracer also toured as part of The Great Australian Wave (as a showcase at PopKomm in Germany).
Upon returning from Europe the band got busy writing new songs and developing their live show. Demand from overseas led the band to recording 3 new songs to compliment the release of ‘L.A.?’ in Europe. ‘L.A.?’ was met with countless praising reviews in German magazines and an expression of interest from Mascot Records in the Netherlands.
Due to the success of the 2009 European tour and an increasing demand from overseas, Tracer played Europe once more with a showcase performance at Germany’s new format PopKomm Music Conference in Berlin. From this performance the band set off on a string of dates throughout Germany, Czech, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK.
The band released their debut LP via Mascot’s Cool Green Recordings on October 3rd 2011. Following the release of the album, they toured the UK and Europe as support to Royal Republic.
In 2011, their single “Too Much” was A-listed on Planet Rock Radio in the UK for three months.  The band generated over 50,000 views for their Too Much video on YouTube.  In December 2011, Planet Rock A-listed Tracer’s critically acclaimed second single “Devil Ride”. By March, Planet Rock A-listed the title track “Spaces In Between”.
Due to popular demand, Tracer returned to the UK and Europe for their first headline tour in April 2012. On this tour, Leigh Brown was replaced by new bassist Pat Saracino.
To coincide with the April UK tour, Tracer released their debut mini album “LA?” in the UK for the very first time (the record was originally released in Australia in 2009 to critical acclaim).
In April 2013, the band will release their follow-up album to Spaces In Between.  The album will be produced by Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Silverchair, Cold Chisel).

Telephone Blues - R.L. Burnside & Johnny Woods

Johnny Woods (November 1, 1917 – February 1, 1990) was an American blues singer and harmonica player in the North Mississippi hill country blues style. Woods was born in a small Mississippi town called Looxahoma, just west of Mississippi Highway 35. His harmonica playing first gained notoriety in the 1960s as a duet partner with fellow blues revival discovery guitarist/singer Mississippi Fred McDowell. They recorded together first for George Mitchell in 1967, for Chris Strachwitz's Arhoolie Records (King of the Country Blues V2), Swingmaster (Blues of Johnny Woods) and in 1972 for Tom Pomposello and Fred Seibert on Oblivion Records (Mississippi Harmonica). Stylistically, Woods' music sprang from the same North Mississippi Fife and drum blues band tradition as McDowell's. However, personal problems kept him rooted in the Delta, primarily working as a farm hand and sharecropper. After McDowell's death in July 1973, Woods faded away until George Mitchell paired him again with another late Mitchell Mississippi Delta discovery, R. L. Burnside, himself a McDowell disciple. Together they recorded the Swingmaster album and video, Going Down South. Johnny Woods died in Olive Branch, Mississippi in 1990. Bad Mother - ANDRE WILLIAMS w/ MORNING 40 FEDERATION

Andre Williams (born Zephire Andre Williams on November 1, 1936) is an American R&B and punk blues musician who started his career in the 1950s at Fortune Records in Detroit. Born in Bessemer, Alabama, United States, Williams lived in a housing project with his mother until she died when he was six years of age. A sly and smart young boy, his "aunties" raised him until he was around 16. He then set out on his own and moved to Detroit, Michigan. There, he became friends with Jack and Devora Brown, owners of Fortune Records which was located at the back of a barber shop. Williams would become labels mates with fellow Fortune Records stars Nolan Strong and Nathaniel Mayer. He then became lead singer for The 5 Dollars in 1955, which already had a contract with Fortune Records. Though most of the songs were billed as 'Andre Williams and the Don Juans' (on Epic in 1956 billed as 'Andre Mr Rhythm Williams and his New Group'), "Bacon Fat" and "Jail Bait" were solo efforts. "Bacon Fat" hit #9 on the Billboard R&B Charts in 1957. "Bacon Fat" (written by Williams) was such a success that Fortune Records sold the song to Epic Records, a much larger distributor (released as Epic 5-9196 "Bacon Fat/Just because of a Kiss"). Since "Bacon Fat" and "Jail Bait" were such successes, Williams figured that "talking instead of singing" was a better idea for him, for he did not have as good a voice as some other singers from the 1950s. In 1960 Fortune released a complete LP, of all of his singles with the Don Juans, which was titled Jail Bait (rereleased in 1986). This was just the start of Williams' nationwide fame. In 1960 he appeared on Motown's Miracle Record label releasing "Rosa Lee". In the early 1960s, Williams co-wrote Stevie Wonder's first song, "Thank You for Loving Me." Williams' "Shake a Tail Feather" was also a hit in 1963 for the Five Du-Tones and then for Ike & Tina Turner. Alvin Cash & the Crawlers also made a hit out of the Williams song "Twine Time". As well as making these hits, Williams also supervised the making of two or more albums by The Contours. Additionally, in the '60s, Williams was the manager and roadie for soul singer Edwin Starr. In 1966 Williams released two records on the Avin Record Label, then two records were released on Detroit's Wingate label: "Loose Juice" and "Do it". Then on the Ric-Tic label in 1967 he released "You Got It and I Want It". In 1968, Williams was signed to Chess Records on Checker, Chicago's major blues label. He was back... wearing velvet lavender suits and playing "bucket-of-blood" styled joints. Chess released many hits for Williams — "Humpin' Bumpin' and Thumpin'" and "Cadillac Jack" in particular. Then, he began to work with many unknown black labels and release songs like "Sweet Little Pussy Cat" and "Rib Tips, Pts. 1 & 2." In 1968, Williams collaborated with the Natural Bridge Bunch to release "Pig Snoots," a novelty song about a man named Ricky who would "come all way cross town to get me some snoots". In the 1970s, Williams wrote some songs for Parliament (band) and Funkadelic, two popular funk groups. (Comedian Redd Foxx then dubbed Andre Williams his most famous nickname, Mr. Rhythm). Once again, Williams began to produce cuts for Ike Turner. Throughout the 1980s, Andre Williams was in poverty because of his drug addictions. He lived in Chicago, Illinois; at one point, he was homeless and begging for money on a Chicago bridge. In 1996, Andre Williams released Mr. Rhythm, which featured new renditions of his old tunes from the "Jail Bait" era. Some included "The Greasy Chicken," "Mean Jean," and "Pass the Biscuits Please." It was a definite comeback for Williams, but most of the crowd had already forgotten about him, and wanted newer-styled music. He changed his style with 1998's Silky. Considered the "world's sleaziest album ever", Silky revolutionized the punky style, dubbed sleaze rock. Mark Deming speaks about Silky: It's "noise-spattered, stripped-down, roots-punk assault, and the results are flat-out nuts." Though sleaze rockers idolized Williams, most critics preferred his original style. In 1999, he began his relationship with Bloodshot Records by recording a country album with The Sadies, entitled Red Dirt. In 2000, Andre Williams released The Black Godfather. The noisy, electric, fuzzy sound was back, with two songs backed by The Dirtbombs. By this time, Andre was already back on stage, performing at the "bucket-of-blood" clubs again. 'The Black Godfather' became his new nickname, along with the outdated 'Mr. Rhythm'. In 2001 he discussed his recent conversion to Judaism and circumcision. In 2002–2003 he toured with the Dutch sleaze rock band Green Hornet. A return to soul-style music came with Aphrodisiac in 2006. "The result is a more laid-back and funky groove that's soulful but potent at the same time, fusing '70s blaxploitation sounds, Jimmy Smith-style jazz figures, and Booker T.-influenced R&B workouts into one solid package" is the way Mark Deming described the album. Williams still plays shows in the USA, and toured Europe in 2001 (with Dutch band Green Hornet as backing band), 2005 and 2006 (with the Marshall Brothers). From August to November 2006, he had a short European tour, ending in Switzerland. Then in early 2008 a European tour with The Flash Express. In 2007, Andre finished recording his latest album with the New Orleans based band, Morning 40 Federation. The album, titled Can You Deal With It, was released by Bloodshot Records in 2008 and is credited to Andre Williams & the New Orleans Hellhounds (the pseudonymous Morning 40 Federation). In 2010 Williams contributed a cover version of "The Way You Dog Me Around" for the compilation LP Daddy Rockin Strong: A Tribute to Nolan Strong & The Diablos. The album is a tribute to the late Nolan Strong, a Fortune Records sensation during the 1950s and early 1960s. Williams has also been known to go by the alias "Rudibaker" or "Rutabaga", with which he puts on a different personality and speaks in a gravely voice. The 2007 documentary "Agile Mobile Hostile: A Year with Andre Williams" tells of Williams' early career at Fortune Records, his hard life on the streets of Chicago in the 1980s, drug and alcohol abuse, his return to the stage and recording studio in 1995, and his current life and musical career - and the struggles that come with it. Sippie Wallace, John Mayall and the Blues Breakers

Sippie Wallace (born as Beulah Thomas, November 1, 1898 – November 1, 1986) was an American singer-songwriter. Her early career in local tent shows gained her the billing "The Texas Nightingale". Between 1923 and 1927, she recorded over 40 songs for Okeh Records, many written by herself or her brothers, George and Hersal Thomas. Her accompanists included Louis Armstrong, Johnny Dodds, Sidney Bechet, King Oliver, and Clarence Williams. Among the top female blues vocalists of her era, Wallace ranked with Ma Rainey, Ida Cox, Alberta Hunter, and Bessie Smith. In the 1930s, she left show business to become a church organist, singer, and choir director in Detroit, and performed secular music only sporadically until the 1960s, when she resumed her career. Wallace was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1982, and was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in 1993. Wallace was born in Houston, Texas, one of 13 children. In her youth Wallace sang and played the piano in Shiloh Baptist Church, where her father was a deacon, but in the evenings the children took to sneaking out to tent shows. By her mid-teens, they were playing in those tent shows. By performing in the various Texas shows, she built a solid following as a spirited blues singer. Wallace came from a musical family: her brother George W. Thomas became a notable pianist, bandleader, composer, and music publisher; her other brother Hersal Thomas was a pianist and composer; and her niece (George's daughter) Hociel Thomas was a pianist and composer After following her brothers to Chicago in 1923, Wallace worked her way into the city's bustling jazz scene. Her reputation led to a recording contract with Okeh Records in 1923. Wallace's first recorded songs, "Shorty George" and "Up the Country Blues", the former written with her brother George, sold well enough to make Wallace a blues star in the early 1920s. Other successful recordings followed, including "Special Delivery Blues" (with Louis Armstrong), "Bedroom Blues" (written by George and Hersal Thomas), and "I'm a Mighty Tight Woman". Her younger brother Hersal died of food poisoning in 1926 at age 16. Wallace moved to Detroit in 1929. Her husband Matt and brother George both died in 1936. Wallace for some 40 years was a singer and organ player at the Leland Baptist Church in Detroit. Mercury Records reissued "Bedroom Blues" in 1945. Aside from an occasional performance or recording date, Wallace did little in the blues until she launched a comeback in 1966 after her longtime friend Victoria Spivey coaxed her out of retirement and on the folk and blues festival circuit. In 1966 Wallace recorded an album on Halloween night, Copenhagen, Denmark, Women Be Wise, with Roosevelt Sykes and Little Brother Montgomery sharing the piano stool. Another 1966 album Sings the Blues, on the latter song, Wallace accompanied herself on piano; otherwise she is backed by either Roosevelt Sykes or Little Brother Montgomery on piano. Includes Wallace's signature song, "Women Be Wise", "Don't Advertise Your Man". The album helped inspire blues-pop singer Bonnie Raitt to take up the blues in the late 1960. In 1971 Raitt recorded a rendition of Sippie Wallace's "Women Be Wise" on her self-titled album Bonnie Raitt. Wallace toured and recorded with Raitt in the 1970s and 1980s, while continuing to perform on her own. The bond between Wallace and Raitt helped bridge the gap between two generations of blues queens. Wallace recorded on Louis Armstrong album, Louis Armstrong and the Blues Singers (1966), singing "A Jealous Woman Like Me", "Special Delivery Blues", "Jack O'Diamond Blues", "The Mail Train Blues" and "I Feel Good". Wallace also recorded an album of old blues standards with her friend Victoria Spivey, called Sippie Wallace and Victoria Spivey, which came out in 1970 on Spivey's own self-named label. In 1981, Wallace recorded an album Sippie for Atlantic Records, which earned a her a 1983 Grammy nomination, and also won the 1982 W. C. Handy Award for Best Blues Album of the Year. Wallace's backup group on were pianist Jim Dapogny's Chicago Jazz Band, consisting of cornetist Paul Klinger, trombonist Bob Smith and Russ Whitman and Peter Ferran on reeds. In 1966 and 1967 she appeared at the Newport Folk Festival, toured Europe with the American Folk Blues Festival, e.g. Copenhagen, Denmark in 1966, the Chicago Blues Festival, 1967, the Ann Arbor Blues Festival, 1972, and appeared at Lincoln Center in New York, 1977. She played herself in the documentary Jammin' with the Blues Greats (1982). On July 22, 1982 at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Sippie shared the stage with the King of the Blues, B.B. King, which was filmed and later broadcast. Then in Ann Arbor, Michigan she got together with German boogie woogie pianist Axel Zwingenberger, with whom she recorded a studio album in 1983. Wallace included many of her own groundbreaking compositions as well as other classic blues songs, on his album, And the Friends of Boogie, Vol. 1: Sippie Wallace, released in 1984. In 1984 she traveled to Germany to tour with Zwingenberger, where they also recorded the only complete live album she ever did: An Evening With Sippie Wallace for Vagabond Records. In March 1986, following a concert in Germany at Burghausen Jazz Festival, she suffered a severe stroke, was hospitalized, returned to the US, and died on her 88th birthday at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. She is buried at Trinity Cemetery, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Hoy Hoy - Little Johnny Jones

Little Johnny Jones (November 1, 1924 – November 19, 1964) was an American Chicago blues pianist and singer, best known for his work with Tampa Red, Muddy Waters and Elmore James. Jones was born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1924. He arrived in Chicago, Illinois in 1945 in the company of Little Walter and "Baby Face" Leroy Foster, and soon replaced pianist Big Maceo Merriweather in Tampa Red's band after Merriweather suffered a stroke which paralysed his right hand. He later backed Muddy Waters on harmonica, and recorded (on piano and vocals) with Waters for the Aristocrat label in 1949. From 1952 to 1956 he played and recorded with Elmore James, and in later years he worked with Howling Wolf, Billy Boy Arnold and Magic Sam, among others. Like several other Chicago pianists of his era, his style was heavily influenced by Big Maceo Merriweather, from whom he had learned,[6] and for whom he played piano after Merriweather's stroke. Jones's 1949 side "Big Town Playboy" is regarded as a classic of the genre, and was covered by guitarist Eddie Taylor in 1955. Popular with audiences, Jones was a heavy drinker and had a reputation as a wild character. According to Homesick James, who worked and toured with them in the 1950s, "Elmore and Johnnie used to just have a fight every night". Jones married his wife Letha in 1952. He died of bronchopneumonia in Cook County Hospital, and was interred at Restvale Cemetery in November 1964. On May 14, 2011 the fourth annual White Lake Blues Festival took place at the Howmet Playhouse Theater in Whitehall, Michigan. The event was organized by executive producer, Steve Salter, of the nonprofit organization Killer Blues to raise monies to honor Jones unmarked grave with a headstone. The concert was a success, and a headstone was placed in June, 2011. Whiskey Drinking Woman - Lou Donaldson, Dr. Lonnie Smith

Lou Donaldson (born November 1, 1926) is a jazz alto saxophonist. He was born in Badin, North Carolina. He is best known for his soulful, bluesy approach to playing the alto saxophone, although in his formative years he was, as many were of the bebop era, heavily influenced by Charlie Parker. His first recordings were with the Charlie Singleton Orchestra in 1950 and then with bop emissaries Milt Jackson and Thelonious Monk in 1952, and he participated in several small groups with other jazz luminaries such as trumpeter Blue Mitchell, pianist Horace Silver, and drummer Art Blakey. In 1953, he also recorded sessions with the trumpet virtuoso Clifford Brown, and Philly Joe Jones. He was a member of Art Blakey's Quintet and appeared on some of their best regarded albums, including the two albums recorded at Birdland in February 1954 Night at Birdland. Donaldson has recorded in the bop, hard bop, and soul jazz genres. For many years his pianist was Herman Foster. He will be inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame on October 11, 2012 If you support live Blues acts, up and coming Blues talents and want to learn more about Blues news and Fathers of the Blues, Like ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! Diggin: "Mojo Hand"
John Dee Holeman
Note: Our thoughts this week are with everyone in the Northeast experiencing the devastation of the storm. We hope you are all safe and sound!

Blues history is fraught with tales of the supernatural, from Robert Johnson's midnight pact with the devil to hoodoo magic winning gambling games in drink houses.
I've listened to John Dee Holeman perform his take on classic blues tune "Mojo Hand" several times over the last few weeks and I can't get over how perfect his voice is for it - it injects just the right amount of matter-of-factness with the muted blues wail that John Dee is so good at pulling off.

A mojo hand was a bit of hoodoo magic - usually "little red flannel bags that smelled of oils and perfumes; some were pierced by a needle or two" (in the words of Robert Palmer.) This recorded version of "Mojo Hand" is a bit more rollicking than usual, but still a good jam: "I'm goin' down down down / And buy me a mojo hand / I'm gonna show all these womens how you ought to treat your man," John Dee sings; it's just the right amount of eerie for a chilly Halloween week.

I Can't Let Go - The Suntones

Formed in 2009 in Fremantle Western Australia the Suntones are a four piece country/blues roots based band currently playing in and around Perth WA. The line-up is Chris Harwood -Acoustic upright bass/vocals, Steve Smith acoustic guitar/mandolin/vocals, Jeff Barham - Acoustic/Electric guitar, mandolin, Dobro and vocals, Andrew Smith - drums. The Sun Tones play a wide range of songs including country influenced originals and roots based covers that appeal to a diverse audience. The general approach is low volume and we specialise in unplugged or totally acoustic performances but are also comfortable in the electrified format. Our influences include The Dingoes, Steve Earle, Paul Kelly, Carl Perkins, JJ Cale, Lucinda Williams and Little Feat. The Suntones recently returned from a successful tour of the 2012 Tamworth Country Music Festival where they impressed audiences with their catchy originals and quirky covers. The Suntones first Album titled "In the Valley" contains songs penned by band members Steve Smith and Jeff Barham and was recorded at Witzend Studio in O'Connor Western Australia in 2011. The songs on this album have a very roots based approach with only acoustic instruments used. The album includes songs about Rodeo Riders, doomed relationships and even a murder ballad which is the title track. Live The Suntones give a tongue in cheek but well-honed performance with the emphasis on fun. You can purchase the album at gigs or on online at most online music stores. As the Years Go Passin' By - The Healers

Samantha Fish - guitar Danielle Schnebelen - bass Kate Moss - guitar Jimmy Hall - sax/vocals Reese Wynans - keyboard Kris Schnebelen - drums The Blue Star Connection is a charity working to get musical instruments to children fighting illnesses. The charity event raised over $9,000 just on that Sunday alone. In front of the stage were a bunch of newly purchased instruments that were going directly to Oklahoma City Children's Hospital the next morning. Two people gave guitars and there was even a nice piano donated. Lazy Dave won the guitar raffle winning a Stratocaster signed by all kinds of blues artists and put it BACK up for auction to raise more money! Kudos to Lazy Dave! This charity is really on the move! Samantha Fish performed with her band and was really on fire that evening just returning from Germany working with her new label RUF Records. Trampled Under Foot did a set along with special guest Jimmy Hall from the Wet Willie Band. The show was great and we played all night long playing TUF songs, and backing up Jimmy Hall. Great fun, but little did we know, Jon Catt had six harmonicas and was passing them out during the last song. He gave one to Frank, and some other folks. Down to his last one, he gave it to Madalyn, my daughter, and she opened the case, pulled out the harp and ran on stage! She jammed with us all the way until the end of the show. Sam, Nick, Kris,Danielle, Jimmy, and Madalyn were getting down! She was performing well with Jimmy Hall and the two of them really put on a show! We'll never forget this one! What a great way to end a benefit for children, having a child really steal the show! Keep your eye out for the next Blue Star event at www.grandblues.org . Academy Events and the DHP in association with The Agency Group are pleased to announce Europe’sBag of Bones UK Tour 2012”
Hot off  the heels of last year’s Balls N’ Banners UK Tour and sold out concert at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Sweden’s biggest hard rock band undertakes a nationwide November 2012 UK Tour.  Very special guest on all UK dates is the US rock band StoneRider.
Tickets can bee booked online from www.eventim.co.uk and www.ticketweb.co.uk. All tickets are priced £18.50, except London Shepherd’s Bush Empire (£20.00).

The highly anticipated UK tour follows hot on the heels of Europe’s ninth studio album, Bag Of Bones, and the Planet Rock radio playlisted singles Not Supposed To Sing The Blues and Firebox.
Classic Rock Magazine recently rated Europe’s previous album, Last Look At Eden, as one of the best hard rock albums of 2009, citing them as "One of the few bands around still making consistently thrilling rock records.”
Metal Hammer praised Europe for their outstanding concerts; “Europe’s live show pulls together all ages, and tastes for a feel-good finale that smells like total victory.”
Joey Tempest - Vocals
John Norum - Guitars
John Leven – Bass Guitar
Mic Michaeli - Keyboards
Ian Haugland – Drums
Best known for their 1986 global classic rock anthem, The Final Countdown, the Swedish rockers received unanimous praise a heavier bluesy, hip-shaking metal sound.  The new album, Bag of Bones, is produced by Kevin Shirley (Black Stone Cherry, Aerosmith, Black Country Communion, Joe Bonamassa, Led Zeppelin).  Celebrated blues rock guitarist, Joe Bonamassa, makes a guest appearance on the title track, Bag of Bones.
Europe vocalist Joey Tempest believes that 2009’s Last Look At Eden album was a significant turning point for the band. That album proved to be Europe’s most important record since The Final Countdown.  Now, with the highly anticipated release of Bag of Bones, Tempest says Europe is “ready to do some serious damage.”

Very special guests on Europe’s ‘Bag of Bones’

UK November 2012 Tour
StoneRider are a young, classic rock-influenced rock and roll band from Atlanta, Georgia. Since the 2008 release of their critically-acclaimed debut Three Legs of Trouble, they have toured the US twice and opened for the likes of Uriah Heep, Robin Trower, Graveyard and Radio Moscow.
For the 2012 follow-up album, Fountains Left To Wake, the band flexed their studio muscles and crafted a double LP reminiscent of Exile on Main Street with doses of Physical Graffiti - not as a sound-alike, but as a celebration of all StoneRider love about rock and roll. The new album blends a wiser, more robust rock sound with psychedelic rock’n’roll jook-joint boogie.

Vocalist and guitarist Matt Tanner evokes a bit of Humble Pie's Steve Marriott this time around, while maintaining the previous record's guitar nods to Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix. Jason Krutzky's drumming is tight and deep in the groove, ebbing and flowing with the bass lines of producer-turned-bandmate Adam McIntyre, whose style blends Ronnie Lane and Duck Dunn with John Paul Jones.

Conclave Records artist: Altered Five - Gotta Earn It - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Gotta Earn It, from Altered Five. This is one of the more entertaining new recordings that I've heard in the past few months. The opening track, Ain't That Peculiar, a song made popular by Marvin Gaye has a definite R&B feel revved up with Albert King like guitar riffs by Jeff Schroedl. What's not to like! Three Wishes, having more of a soul ballad style really showcases leader Jeff Taylor's vocal abilities and gives Jeff Schroedl a nice opening to again showcase his chops on lead guitar. The title track, You've Got To Earn It, has a definite southern soul sound but holding tight to the blues with blistering guitar riffs from Jeff Schroedl and fine rhythm backing from drummer Scott Schroedl, bassist Mark Solveson and key man Ray Tevich. Keep The Best takes a modern uptempo blues shuffle stance with the ever constant great vocals from JT but unexpected ripping guitar soloing from Jeff Schroedl who not only exhibits great chops but really cool tone when subdued. Older, Wiser, Richer is a driving blues track lead off again with Jeff S. on guitar and he sets a pretty nice table for JT to sing from. Tevich gets a chance to stretch a bit on the 88's and Jeff Schroedl again comes in with beautiful guitar riffs that make you sweat. Mona Lisa is a bit more straightforward R&B ballad with the funky back down low. Jeff Schroedl, a name you'll want to remember plays some neck wrenching riffs on this track as well .... bringing to mind Junior Wells' Snatch It Back (oh baby) And Hold It! Tight Spot is constructed along the lines of a more contemporary blues of Robert Cray but with Albert King influenced screaming riffs by Jeff Schroedl (translation, think SRV arranged by Robert Cray and played by the sons of Albert King and Otis Rush). Dynamite has a much more funky base and it's really cool. The vocal treatment on this track is more Eric Gales but the arrangement and instrumentation sticks to it's truth and the band sounds like Altered Five. Hard to do anything but draw comparisons but the sound is really different and enjoyable. Buddy Guy's Watch Yourself has a really straight up rock attach sounding more like a Little Richard arrangement showing even another dimension of this tight band. Tevich plays a nice long piano stretch and sets JT up to keep the crowd jumping with his crisp vocals. This track has a lot of the energy of an early rock n' roll track hanging onto it's blues roots. Oh yeah...and Jeff Schroedl rips this track a new one with some flashy r n r guitar riffs! Bounce Back, the last track on the release has a laid back feeling and seems like the natural airplay track. JT's vocals are more subdued and the band in general more slick. This is a really strong release from a band that I have not been aware of prior to this listening. Grab a copy. I think you'll really like it.
