V. in Tambach-Dietharz. 1999 erhielt Kerth den Kulturpreis der Stadt Erfurt. Joe "Stride" Turner and Champion Jack Dupree

Joe Turner (November 3, 1907 – July 21, 1990) was an American jazz pianist. Joseph H. Turner was born in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. One of the masters of the stride piano style associated with Harlem, New York City, Turner got his first big musical break in 1928 with his hiring by the Benny Carter Orchestra. He also played with Louis Armstrong. After World War II, he settled in Europe, living in Paris from 1962. He played at La Calavados, a nightclub situated on the Champs Elysees until his death from a heart attack in 1990, at the age of 82 A rare French TV gem from the Sixties featuring two greats: Joe Turner born in Baltimore, 3 Nov 1907 died in Montreuil, France, 21 July 1990 (not to be confused with his great blues singer namesake "Big" Joe Turner), a dazzling stride pianist who played with all the greats in Harlem during the Twenties, Louis Armstrong amongst them, and the great "Champion" Jack Dupree (1910 - 1992), the embodiment of of the New Orleans blues and boogie woogie pianist, a true barrelhouse "professor" and a great showman to boot as is amply evident. One can only marvel at the level of mass culture back then compared to now.

Sonny Rhodes

Sonny Rhodes (born Clarence Edward Smith, November 3, 1940, Smithville, Texas) is an American blues singer and lap steel guitar player. He has recorded over two hundred songs. "I'm what you call a self-proclaimed Disciple of the Blues!" said Rhodes about his years playing and singing for fans of blues around the world. He has been nominated fifteen times for the Blues Music Awards, and won the Instrumentalist-Other category in 2011 Rhodes was born in Smithville, Texas, he was the sixth and last child of Le Roy and Julia Smith, who were sharecroppers He received his first guitar at the age of eight as a Christmas present and really became serious about the blues at age 12. He credits his uncle as his source of inspiration. Rhodes began performing around Smithville and nearby Austin in the late 1950s, while still in his teens. Rhodes listened to a lot of T-Bone Walker's music when he was young, and other guitarists he credits as being influences include L. C. Robinson, Percy Mayfield, Pee Wee Crayton and B. B. King. Rhodes's first band, Clarence Smith and the Daylighters, played the Austin area blues clubs before Rhodes joined the Navy after high school graduation. In the Navy, he was stationed in California, where he worked for a while as a radio man and closed-circuit Navy ship disc jockey, telling off-color jokes in between the country and blues records he would spin for the entertainment of the sailors. Rhodes recorded a single for Domino Records in Austin, "I'll Never Let You Go When Something Is Wrong" in 1958, and also learned to play the bass guitar. He played bass behind Freddie King and his friend Albert Collins. After his stint in the Navy, Rhodes returned to California while in his mid-20s, and lived in Fresno, California for a few years before signing a recording contract with Galaxy Records in Oakland, California. In 1966, he recorded a single, "I Don't Love You No More" and another single for Galaxy in 1967 and then in 1978, out of total frustration with the San Francisco Bay Area record companies, he recorded "Cigarette Blues" on his own label, Rhodesway Records in 1978. Rhodes toured Europe in 1976, opening the European market to him, and he recorded with several European labels, but without much success. His European recordings included I Don't Want My Blues Colored Bright and a live album, In Europe. In 1985, Just Blues, appeared on his own Rhodesway label. In the late 1980s, he began recording first for Ichiban Records and later for Kingsnake. His albums for Ichiban included Disciple of the Blues (1991) and Living Too Close to the Edge (1992). Aside from his self-produced 1985 release Just Blues, later releases included The Blues Is My Best Friend and Out of Control (1996) If you support live Blues acts, up and coming Blues talents and want to learn more about Blues news and Fathers of the Blues, ”LIKE” ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! Don't Hit Me No More - Mabel John

Mable John (born November 3, 1930) is an American blues vocalist and was the first female signed by Berry Gordy to Motown's Tamla label. John was born in Bastrop, Louisiana. At a very young age, she and her parents moved to Arkansas, where her father got a job in a paper mill. There four brothers (including R&B singer Little Willie John) and two sisters were born. In 1941, after her father was able to secure a better job, the family moved to Detroit, where two additional brothers were born. The family lived in a new housing development at Six Mile and Dequindre Road. She attended Cleveland Intermediate School, and then Pershing High School, which is at Seven Mile and Ryan Road. After graduating from Pershing High School, she took a job as an insurance representative at Friendship Mutual Insurance Agency, a company run by Berry Gordy's mother, Bertha. Later, she left the company and spent two years at Lewis Business College. She subsequently ran into Mrs. Gordy again, who told Mable that her son Berry was writing songs and was looking for people to record them. Gordy began coaching her and would accompany John on piano at local engagements. This continued until 1959, when John performed at the Flame Show bar on John R Street at the last show that Billie Holiday did in Detroit, just weeks before Holiday's death. The same year, John began recording for Gordy. First she was signed to United Artists, but nothing was released there. Eventually, she became one of the first artists signed to Tamla, Gordy's own label. In 1960, she released her first Tamla single, "Who Wouldn't Love a Man Like That?," a blues number, to no success. John followed with "No Love" in June of that year and then with "Actions Speak Louder Than Words" by year's end. While Motown was beginning to have success with acts like The Miracles and The Marvelettes (and later The Supremes, who had sang background vocals for John) that appealed to teenagers and young adults, it failed to make an impact in the established blues market. As a result, Gordy soon thinned out his roster of early blues artists. While John continued to be used as a background singer, Gordy dissolved her contract in 1962. After leaving Motown, John spent several years as a Raelette, backing many Ray Charles hits. In 1966 she attempted a solo career again, signing with Stax Records. Her first single with the label was "Your Good Thing Is About To End." The song peaked at #6 on the R&B chart, and even managed to cross over onto pop radio, peaking at #95 there. She released six more singles for the label, none of which captured her first single's success. After leaving Stax Records in 1968, John rejoined The Raelettes for several years. She left secular music in 1973, and began managing Christian gospel acts, occasionally returning to the studio as a singer. John received a Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1994. She appeared in John Sayles' 2007 movie Honeydripper.

The Trashman - $5Sugar

The Five Dollar Sugar, of Tulsa, OK, is really something that must be heard, as words can fall short. Setting the stage for a new generation of true musicians, $5 Sugar is putting their trademark "Bluedirt" sound on the map. Blending a wide variety of blues, rock, country, jazz, and folk, they bring an unparalleled energy to any ear they touch. Still in their freshman year, The Sugar has already been featured three times on 97.5 KMOD, placed 2nd in The Tulsa Blues Society's 9th Annual Blues Challenge, opened the stage for two national acts and have released one acoustic album, one live album and two full length albums. Joshua "Too Loud" Yarbrough Joshua Yarbrough's heart belongs to the blues. You can hear this influence in almost all of his original tunes. A local Tulsa boy, Josh started playing around town in 2005, and his buzz has been growing ever since. It's hard to categorize Joshua Yarbrough into one genre of music, as his sound is as diverse as it is heartfelt. At any given show you'll hear some blues, country, classic rock, folk, and even the occasional beatnik ballad. In 2011 he was nominated for an Absolute Best of Tulsa Award, in the R&B Category. After fronting and playing in every band he could, playing with Oklahoma Blues and Jazz Music Hall of Fame members Harry Williams, Rocky Frisco, and a number of others, Joshua found himself opening shows for blues legends Guitar Shorty and Watermelon Slim. Joshua competed in the Blues Society of Tulsa's Blues Challenge on three different occasions, most recently with The Five Dollar Sugar (placing second at the Historic Cain's Ballroom). After years of playing Tulsa in various formations of "The Joshua Yarbrough Band", Joshua now wields his searing guitar licks, wailing harp tones, and heart-dropping voice as the front man of Tulsa own Five Dollar Sugar. "Big" Joshua Eatmon Hailing from Tulsa, Joshua Eatmon carries a rhythmic force to be reckoned with. Rasied on the music of James Brown, Tower Of Power, The Temptations, and The Allman Brothers, Joshua started singing and playing drums in chruch, at age 10. He grew to learn orchestral percussion, as well as being heavily influenced by drummers Dennis Chambers, Carter Beauford, and Christopher Coleman. Now 26, he has spent 4 years touring with inspirational Christian artist Michael Gungor, and backed current Tulsa blues star Steve Proyor on many occasions. As the rock-solid foundation of The Five Dollar Sugar, Joshua Eatmon can't help but turn heads all across Tulsa. Dusty "Low Down, Dirty Rotten" Robison Dusty began playing music at the age of 12 and never looked back. Having been brought up by a mixture of musicians in and around his family, he quickly developed musical skills. By mixing certain genre's of music together thoughout the years Dusty has created his own original sound. In 2004 he joined the band A.D.D and was featured on the album 'Moodswings'. Later that year A.D.D featured as the supporting act for Shooter Jennings and Teddy Gieger at The Cains Ballroom in Tulsa, Ok. Later, he went on to play with Optimistic To A Fault and Standing Ape Count. Having won Gorilla Production's Battle of the Bands, Standing Ape Count recieved a twenty hour recording session and released thier album "Muda Erph" in 2009. In 2010 he signed a recording contract at Deka Records with a band called Zero Crossing. Dusty wrote and co-produced the tittle track of Zero Crossing's album 'Story of My Life'. Later, that same year, he was featured in two seperate groups that were nominated for three Absolute Best Of Tulsa music awards. Rap/Rock group The Ne'er Do Well was nominated for Best Hip Hop and featured as the supporting act for Bone Thugs at The Cains Ballroom in Tulsa, Ok. Southern Rock group Ransom James was nominated for Best Newcomer and Best Live Rock Band of the year. Later, the group recorded the album 'Uncle Don's Appleshine' and took a tour to Memphis on 'The American Hero Ride'. All proceeds from the album went to the Veterans Hospital in Memphis Tenn. In Sept. 2011 Dusty performed with Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame member, Curly 'No Shoes' Jr. at The Eighth Annual Tulsa Blues Challenge. In That same month he went on to perform with yet another Oklahoma Blues Hall of Famer, Harry Williams, at The Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame 'Dusk Til Dawn' festival in Rentiesville, OK. In March, 2012 Dusty performed with Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame member Johnny Rawls at The Cimarron Bar in Tulsa, Ok. Since then Dusty has shared the stage with local legends and Hall of Famer's such as Rocky Frisco, Bob Withrow, Billy Snow and Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame Co-founder, Selby Miner. He is a former member of The Kevin Pharris Band, The O.T.S.B. and is currently doing his solo project, Dirty Rotten and performing with The $5 Sugar. He has been quoted to be one the strongest, most versitile bassist in Oklahoma. He has set his sites high in the music industry and aim's to be inducted to The Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame in the not so distant future. Timothy "Timbo" Kelly Born in Tulsa, OK, raised in Billings, MT, Timbo Kelly is a grab bag of musical prowess. Heavily rooted in blues, jazz, rock, and folk, Timbo didn't stop at simply learning guitar. Playing piano, mandolin, banjo, cello, and saxophone (just to name a few), Timbo cut his teeth across all genres of Tulsa. From latin-blues-funk quintet David's Bandana, to acoustic heavy metal legend Chuk Cooley, Timbo has yet to find a sound he couldn't get in on. After studying music theory at TCC, attaining a certification in Pro Tools engineering at SongSmith Records in Broken Arrow, OK, and being nominated for 7 different Absolute Best of Tulsa Awards, he has found his home with The Five Dollar Sugar. Vizztone artist:Dennis Gruenling - Rockin' All Day - New Release review

I just received the newest release, Rockin' All Day, from Dennis Gruenling and it's a flat out blast! Gruenling, joined by his touring partner, Doug Deming (guitar and vocals)Andrew Gohman on bass, Scott Hornick on bass, Devin Nell on drums, Tom Papadatos on drums and Dave Gross on piano really know how to make the place jump. Beginning with Rockin' All Day, Deming takes the vocal spot and plays some hot riffs but Gruenling shows why he is considered one of the top harp players on the planet. On Roll Your Moneymaker, Deming keeps the vocal slot and plays tight little riffs opening the door again for Gruenling to play over the top riffs. The mix is really solid on these recordings making a huge difference. One of the observations that I have about people who make classic blues recordings is lack of clarity in the recording. This recording sounds really authentic but the instruments aren't muddy or hidden. They are clear and distinct. Deming plays an outro on guitar that again has the heart of the original recordings. Original track, The Rev is a real blistering harp track (Stilladog...you listening?)! This is the kind of track that really blasts along and Deming gets his chance to play some blistering riffs as well. Spectacular. The classic Saturday Night Fish Fry is always a favorite and the band plays it like it is the first time it has been played. Deming's delivery on vocals retains the curiosity that was shown on the original track and it sounds fresh and fun. One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer has a much more laid back tempo than what is most often heard today setting the table for some really smooth guitar soloing and soulful harp work. She's So Pretty comes right off Muddy's song sheet but Gruenling plays some great riffs under the melody and Deming's solid guitar playing drives the band on and Gohman keeps the bottom tight. The harp work on this track in particular has just the right tone. Warm, distorted and crisp. You Can Do No Wrong is a real blues rocker opening the door for Gruenling and Deming to play some cool out of the box rock riffs. On It Went Down Easy, Gruenling takes the lead on vocals for a retro blues track. Deming again plays some really tasty riffs on guitar and Gruenling keeps the groove with his notorious harp tone. 2:22A.Am, another Gruenling original instrumental takes a slow pace and Gruenling plays some beatifically articulated harp lead. This is a great track! No jump release would be complete without Bloodshot Eyes and here it is. The difference in this inclusion is that it is done with great feeling and respect and humor. The delivery is lively and full of life. Actin' Crazy, a Deming original has the total Chicago swing sound coaxing the best from Gruenling on harp and some unusually low harp phrasing. This is a really solid track making you stomp your foot as you enjoy this terrific band. Another original Gruenling track, Hotso, wraps up the release. This lively rhythmic instrumental track is a crisp ending to a really enjoyable recording. This is one you'll leave in your player for a long time!

At the ripe age of 15, after a very early start in his professional music career recording his first album with the Scorpions and after joining UFO age 17, Michael Schenker focused exclusively on lead guitar and pure self-expression.
The second chapter in his career was focused on experimenting and developing his expertise on a more musical and personal level. With excellent musicians, friends and fans from all over the world, this live recording is part of this celebration.

Schenker sees his music as a building block in the construction of the Temple Of Rock.
"The Temple is almost finished," explains Michael. “The foundation was laid in the 60s by Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. The walls were then built by UFO and others in the late 70s.  By the 80s it was further reinforced by the likes of the Scorpions, and many other influential rock bands.
"There's not much new left to expect, but I am glad to be a part of this temple,” says Michael. "It’s unbelievable fun and an honor to share a stage and make music with some of the world's best musicians."
A concert from Tilburg, the Netherlands was recorded in May 2012 that noticeably distinguishes itself from previous releases due to the line-up that includes Michael Schenker (lead guitar), Doogie White (vocals), Herman Rarebell (drums), Francis Buchholz (bass) and Wayne Findley (rhythm guitar, keyboards).

In addition to this Tilburg concert, fans can experience extracts from London's 2011 High Voltage Festival with Michael Voss (vocals), featuring awe-inspiring guest appearances from Schenker's friends and musical companions including his brother Rudolf Schenker (The Scorpions) who plays rhythm guitar on “Rock You Like a Hurricane”, “Hanging On” and “Doctor Doctor”, UFO’s Pete Way who plays bass guitar on “Doctor Doctor”, and vocalists Jeff Scott Soto (ex-Journey), and Doogie White, who jointly sing on “Doctor Doctor”.
All in all, there has never been such extensive and high quality material from Michael Schenker for your viewing and listening pleasure.

                                           Richie Onori  - Biography
Many people would consider drumming for one of the most iconic bands of the 70s the pinnacle of a music career. But for Richie Onori, drummer for The Sweet ("Ballroom Blitz", "Fox On The Run") and the band Heaven and Earth, it is only the beginning.
Richie Onori got his first break when he was 16 playing with the group ? and the Mysterians (who had the hit song "96 Tears"). He then joined the group Satyr. With a cast of amazing musicians this band opened shows in Canada for Alice Cooper as well as Aerosmith.
Richie made his mark on the music scene as a world-class drummer, having played and recorded with a diverse cross-section of artists such as Keith Emerson, Richie Sambora, Louis Johnson, Ronnie James Dio, Paul Rodgers, Slash, and Steve Lukather before joining The Sweet.
Now, Richie has released his own CD, entitled "Days Of Innocence", a collection of songs imbued with influences of the classic California blues/rock scene that he grew up with in LA's San Fernando Valley in the 60s and 70s. A prolific songwriter, Richie speaks from his heart and says what's on his mind. As usual with Richie, it was soon evident that he would need more than one album to say what he wanted to say and he decided to release two CDs, giving himself room to explore both his emotional journeys ("Days of Innocence") and his spirituality and social commentary (the upcoming "American Fighters") within the frame of an infectiously grooving blues/rock sound, ably assisted by the talents of a roster of heavy hitters with whom he has played over the years.
Like drummers Dave Grohl and Phil Collins, Richie brings his impeccable groove and rock-solid pocket to the table as a component of his larger concept. In addition to drumming, Richie is also an accomplished guitarist, singer, songwriter - and business entrepreneur. He has a very successful line of guitar straps, Onori Guitar Straps, and is the US distributor for Albion Amplifiers.
Keeping up with even one of those careers would be enough for most people, but for Richie it's all in a day's work. As successful as these endeavors have been, his first priority is making music that speaks about what's important to him as a person, and in a larger sense as a citizen of America and of the world, and the common thread is connection and communication. Richie Onori is driven by a creative spark that enables him to thrive in a variety of endeavors, and redefine the word 'artist'.
When it came to his own musical vision, his interests and accomplishments in so many different spheres led to the development of Richie Onori not simply as a musician or an artist, but as a brand. The Onori brand represents creativity, positive energy, communication and integrity, and these values are expressed in everything he undertakes. He succeeds in the business world by bringing an artist's perspective to his companies, with an innate understanding of what other artists need and want (his strap line's motto is "For musicians, by musicians"), and his music reflects his personal and social outlook and experiences. Richie says, "As we sink deeper into our mechanized and corporate worlds, all we can hope for is that the artist can rise to the occasion and help shape our world and realities with real vision, truth and leadership".
'Rise to the occasion' he does. Richie walks the talk, and believes music is a vehicle that can be used to communicate truth and awareness, as well as to promote change. With this in mind, Richie Onori has put together a body of work that reflects his multifaceted life - and speaks directly to his audience as well, with a multi-layered approach all his own. Richie is on a journey of the heart, of the mind, and of the spirit, and he invites you to come along for the ride - but, be warned - if you're with Richie, you had better fasten your seat belt! Exhilarating, inspiring, and energizing - so hang on tight!

Bright Boy Blues - Cecil Scott and his Bright Boys

Reedman Cecil Scott and his older brother Lloyd (born 8-21-1902), who played drums, came out of the relatively small community of Springfield, Ohio which proved to be a rich cradle for jazz musicians, producing the core of McKinney's Cotton Pickers and the Scott band which became Cecil Scott and his Bright Boys. The triangle of Springfield, Wilberforce and Xenia had a particularly strong black community because it housed one of the two pre-Civil War private black colleges, Wilberforce. The Scotts began their band in Springfield in the early 1920s to compete with Milt Senior's Synco Jazz Band which became McKinney's Cotton Pickers. In the early 1920s, Scott's Symphonic Syncopators, as their bass drum called them, included Gus McClung, trumpet; Earl Horne, trombone; Cecil Scott, reeds; Buddy Burton, violin; Don Frye, piano; Dave Wilborn, banjo and Lloyd Scott, drums. They played as far away as Pittsburg. In the mid Twenties they had a three months' summer gig at Hermit's End or Herman's Inn, 2493 Seventh Avenue, in Harlem. Their band was still a little small and young for the big city and they returned to Ohio. They added two excellent men: Dicky Wells, trombone from Louisville, Kentucky and Frankie Newton, trumpet from Huntington, West Virginia. As a ten piece group called Lloyd Scott's Symphonic Syncopators, they returned to Harlem and were quite successful, based for almost two years at the Capitol Palace, 575 Lenox Avenue. This was an after-hours club that stayed open well into the morning hours. Since their own job started so late, the Scott outfit often served as relief band for bigger units such as Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson etc. They first recorded in 1927 under the name of Lloyd Scott and his Orchestra featuring arrangements by pianist Don Frye and trumpeter Kenneth Roane with solos by Dickie Wells in his first recording. Along with Roane, Hubert Mann played banjo and Cecil Scott was on baritone sax and clarinet. Lloyd Scott stopped playing to concentrate on managing the band now billed as Cecil Scott's Bright Boys. The band prospered, playing at the Savoy and Roseland ballrooms and touring to St. Louis and elsewhere. They featured showmanship, smooth danceable tunes and really advanced hot arrangements. The band featured two contrasting trumpeters in Bill Coleman and Frankie Newton and the excellent trombone of Wells, way before his Count Basie days. Scott on clarinet, tenor and baritone sax and Frye also took lots of solo space. This group recorded in 1929. Although the Depression caught up with them and they never recorded again, Swing Era musicians such as Roy Eldridge, Johnny Hodges and trumpeter Joe Thomas all reportedly passed through the band. After disbanding his group in the early 1930s, Cecil Scott continued as a sideman in swing bands. He was active in the late 40s small band jazz revival in New York as well and is featured in photographs on the Library of Congress American Memory website. Cecil Scott died in January of 1964. Speedo - Speedo and the Cadillacs

Earl "Speedoo" Carroll (born November 2, 1937) is the lead vocalist for the doo wop group The Cadillacs. The group's biggest hit was "Speedo", Carroll's subsequent nickname. It was released in 1955. He later joined The Coasters. Carroll left The Coasters in the early 1990s to permanently reform The Cadillacs. In the 1990s, a newspaper feature discovered that Carroll had made a successful life for himself as a custodian at PS 87, a New York elementary school, where according to the later book, he was a beloved figure whom the children called "Speedoo". Earl was chosen to be the subject of a children's book, That's Our Custodian, by Ann Morris (Brookfield, Connecticut): Millbrook Press). The publicity helped him to revive his career. He became a mainstay of the PBS series honoring doo wop, hosted by Jerry Butler. Alcohol And Jake Blues - TOMMY JOHNSON

Tommy Johnson (1896 – November 1, 1956) was an influential American delta blues musician, who recorded in the late 1920s, and was known for his eerie falsetto voice and intricate guitar playing Johnson was born near Terry, Mississippi, and moved around 1910 to Crystal Springs where he lived for most of his life. He learned to play the guitar and, by 1914, was supplementing his income by playing at local parties with his brothers Major and LeDell. In 1916 he married and moved to Webb Jennings' Plantation near Drew, Mississippi, close to the Dockery Plantation. There he met other musicians including Charlie Patton and Willie Brown By 1920 he had become an alcoholic and itinerant musician, based in Crystal Springs but traveling widely around the South, sometimes accompanied by Papa Charlie McCoy. In 1928 he made his first recordings with McCoy for Victor Records. The recordings included "Canned Heat Blues", in which he sang of drinking methanol from the cooking fuel Sterno. The song features the refrain "canned heat, mama, sure, Lord, killing me." The blues group Canned Heat took their name from this song. Johnson's "Big Road Blues" inspired Canned Heat's song, "On the Road Again". A significantly different version of the song appears as "Canned Heat" on the Big Road Blues album by K. C. Douglas. He recorded two further sessions, in August 1928, and for Paramount Records in December 1929. He did not record again, mistakenly believing that he had signed away his right to record. This resulted in a legal settlement with The Mississippi Sheiks who had used Johnson's "Big Road Blues" melody in their successful "Stop and Listen". Johnson was party to the copyright settlement, but was too drunk at the time to understand what he had signed to. Johnson's recordings established him as the premier Delta blues vocalist of his day, with a powerful voice that could go from a growl to a falsetto. He was also an accomplished guitarist. His style influenced later blues singers such as Robert Nighthawk and Howlin' Wolf, whose song "I Asked for Water (She Brought Me Gasoline)" was based on Johnson's "Cool Water Blues". He was a talented composer, blending fragments of folk poetry and personalized lyrics into set guitar accompaniments to craft striking blues compositions such as "Maggie Campbell". To enhance his fame, Johnson cultivated a sinister persona. According to his brother LeDell, he claimed to have sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his mastery of the guitar. This story was later also associated with Robert Johnson, to whom Tommy Johnson was unrelated. Tommy Johnson also played tricks with his guitar, playing it between his legs and behind his head, and throwing it in the air while playing. Johnson remained a popular performer in the Jackson area through the 1930s and 1940s, sometimes performing with Ishman Bracey. He was highly influential on other performers, partly because he was willing to teach his style and his repertoire. Tommy Johnson's influence on local traditions is discussed by David Evans in Tommy Johnson and ''Big Road Blues. Tradition & Creativity in the Folk Blues He died of a heart attack after playing at a party in 1956. He is buried in the Warm Springs Methodist Church Cemetery outside of Crystal Springs, Mississippi. In 2001 a headstone was commissioned through the Mt. Zion Memorial Fund, a Mississippi non-profit corporation, by the family of Tommy Johnson and paid for by musician Bonnie Raitt. The large, granite memorial engraved with Johnson's portrait was not placed on Johnson's grave for several years afterward, however, due to an ongoing dispute between Tommy Johnson's family (led by his niece, Vera Johnson Collins), the owners of farm property encircling the cemetery, and the Copiah County Board of Supervisors in regard to a deteriorated road preventing access to the burial site. This issue was resolved in October 2012, when it was announced that the headstone would reach its final destination on October 26. The headstone had been on public display in the Crystal Springs, Mississippi Public Library since being unveiled on October 20, 2001. An annual Tommy Johnson Blues Festival is now held in Crystal Springs, on every third weekend in October. The inaugural edition was held in Jackson and Crystal Springs in 2006 If you support live Blues acts, up and coming Blues talents and want to learn more about Blues news and Fathers of the Blues, ”LIKE” ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page!
