Soulful Femme - Attitude - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Attitude, from Soulful Femme and it's a tight rocker with a blues overtone. Opening with title track, Attitude, Soulful Femme principals Stevee Wellons and Cheryl Rinovato get down to business. Wellons is upfront on vocal, with Rinovato playing a great blues rhythm, backed by Albert Castiglia on guitar, Michael Bram on drums, Matt Raymond on bass and Dave Gross on Hammond. Kevin Burt adds some really soulful lead vocal on Insane Asylum. Rich, warm vocal blending with Wellons and nicely placed guitar lead by Rinovato make this one of my favorites on the release. With an R&B feel, Loser's Game has a strong melody, and with Wellons' vocal lead and a solid guitar solo, just the right feel for a top radio track. Reggae fused, Dysfunctional Funk is another track with strong radio appeal with a strong melody, solid lead vocals and nice addition of Doug Wooverton on trumpet and Mark Earley on sax. Wrapping the release is Time To Walk, an easy cruiser with smooth vocals by Wellons and a cool guitar solo by Rinovato and super bass lines by Raymond. Solid closer.

NOLA Blue Records artist Lil' Jimmy Reed with Ben Levin - Back To Baton Rouge - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Back To Baton Rouge, from Lil' Jimmy Reed with Ben Levin and it's terrific. Opening with Jimmy Reed shuffle, Down In Virginia, Lil' Jimmy Reed is up front on guitar, harmonica and lead vocal and showing excellent aptitude at both gets this release going. Backed by super piano guy, Ben Levin on piano, Aron Levin on second guitar, Walter Cash Jr on bass and Ricky Nye on drums. On slow blues, They Call Me Lil' Jimmy, Reed gets the chance to show some really tasty guitar riffs, complimenting his strong blues vocals. This track may be my favorite on the release. Fats Domino style blues, Back To Baton Rouge has a war swagger and Reed's trademark guitar sound elevates the track. Another Jimmy Reed track, I'm The Man Down There, has that Jimmy Reed Strut. Lil' Jimmy really does it nice with satiny vocals and broad sound harmonica over a solid bottom. Wrapping the release is Mailbox Blues with it's Latin rhythm and cool guitar lead. Reed's vocal phrasing and excellent call and response on guitar makes this a perfect closer.

Earwig Music/Unisun Productions artist: Lady J Huston - Groove Me Baby - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Groove Me Baby, by Lady J Huston and it's a cool set of blues, R&B and soul. Opening with Your Call, a cool shuffle with Lady J Huston on lead vocal, complimented by Adrea Rohlehr on backing vocal, Ben Shafer on tenor sax, Darryl Bassett on lead guitar, Frank Dunbar on bass, James Gugle on drums, Jason Cooper on lead guitar, and M. Lew Winer III on bari sax. Huston plays a cool flugelhorn on Tearing Me Apart, a nice slower blues ballad, with Anna C. Allen on backing vocal. Very nice. With a light Latin rhythm on, Corona You Make Me Sick!, Huston mixes it up and adds a sweet trumpet solo. With Dunbar on bass, Winer III on tenor sax and Nichaus Iv on lead guitar, a real cool track. Pure R&B oozes on title track, Groove Me Baby. Adding synth herself, and joined by Rohlehr on backing vocals, with Ashton Channing Proctor on rhythm guitar, Shafer on flute, Bwayne Smotherson on backing vocals, Charles Smotherson Jr on drums, Bassett on lead guitar, Dunbar on bass, and Jocelyn Rugaber on electronic keys, this is the definite radio track on the release. Wrapping the release is a live version of At Last, made popular by Etta James. Huston's vocals are deep, backed by Bassett on lead guitar, Dunbar on bass, Gerald Warren on drums, and with sweet tenor work by Winer III. Solid closer.

Blue Heart Records artist: Grainne Duffy - Dirt Woman Blues - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Dirt Woman Blues, from Grainne Duffy, and it's a healthy helping of blues, rock, soul, country and pop. Opening with blues rocker, Well Well Well, Ireland born, Grainne Duffy shows plenty of swagger on vocals, backed by Marc Ford on guitar and vocal, Paul Sherry on guitars, Elijah Ford on bass and JJ Johnson on drums. Upfront lead guitar by Marc Ford gives the track bite and along with Elijah's bass work and Johnson's tight drumming makes this a strong opener. Soul soaked, Running Back To You really is a showcase for Duffy with emotional vocal work, highlighted by a crisp guitar solo by Ford. Another soulful ballad, Hold On To You, is really strong with a memorable melody, strong vocals and plenty of feel, not unlike the music coming out of Muscle Shoals in the 70's. Very nice. Yes I Am turns up the heat on rock with a great bottom and driving guitar under strong vocals by Duffy. Wrapping the release is Killycrum with it's pop country feel and blues rock flavor. This is a solid book of music with strong players and great hooks.

Michael Vincent - Electric Fox - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Electric Fox, by Michael Vincent and it's a cool, modern, edgy pop release. Opening with Together, Bay area, singer/songwriter Vincent crafts his lyrics and melodies supported by his band, U No Who. With Anthony Fulgar on drums, Scott Warren on lead guitar and David Mendoza on bass and harmony vocal, these guys rock. Solid harmonies with Mendoza and jangly guitar work by Warren give this track that indie feel. Kinda Like (Forever) is my favorite track on the release with it's almost Kinks like feel with loosely structured guitar work and a tight bottom by Fulgar. Wrapping the release is Travel with an up tempo beat. Vincent uses a call and response setup with Warren on guitar balancing his vocal lead. A firm bass line by Mendoza and excellent accent swats by Fulgar give the track a real kick.

Little Village artist: D.K. Harrell - The Right Man - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The Right Man, by D.K. Harrell and if you're looking for a new favorite blues singer who knows how to play a great blues phrase, look no further. Opening with title track, The Right Man, D.K. Harrell on lead guitar and vocal is smooth. He knows how to swing and his riffs are clean. Joined by Kid Andersen on rhythm guitar, Jim Pugh on keys, Jerry Jemmott on bass, Tony Coleman on drums and Jon Otis on congas this is a great opener. With a lot of soul and a funky overtone, Harrell lays down Get These Blues Out Of Me. I really can't think of a more BB King like performer who sounds genuinely original. His delivery is sincere and his counterpoint guitar is effortless and rich. One of my favorite tracks on the release is Hello Trouble with a slower pace and perfect vocal/guitar call and response. Backed by Neil Levonius and John Halbleib on trumpet, Mike Rinta on trombone, Mike Peloquin on tenor and Doc Kupka on bari sax, Harrell really works this track with stinging guitar lead and rich vocal lead. Funky blues, Honey Ain't So Sweet really has a JG Watson or WW Washington feel with punchy horns, firm bass lines by Jemmott and tight drumming by Coleman. Wrapping the release is One For The Road, a real swinger with Harrell playing against Pugh on organ pushing the track ever higher. A real nice blues jam with Harrell setting up the melody with a fiery guitar intro. Pugh takes the first proper solo on organ with Jemmott really pounding the bass and Coleman rips up the skins. Harrell steps back up front closing with a real nice guitar outro. Check this release out for sure.

Guitar One Records artist: Misty Blues - Outside The Lines - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Outside The Lines, by Misty Blues and I really like it. Opening with Where The Blues Come From, MB lays down a heavy bottomed blues rocker with thumping bass lines and vocal by Bill Patriquin, and heavy drum work and vocals by Rob Tatten, and rabble rousing organ by David Vittone with solid contributions by Gina Coleman on cigar box guitar and vocal, Diego Monque on guitar and vocal, Seth Fleischmann on guitar and vocals and  Benny Kohn on keys. On One Of These Days, Matt Cusson on keys and vocals gives the track a cool, Latin feel with Fleischmann soaring on lead guitar, strong sax work by Aaron Dean, and snappy drumming by Tatten. Coleman really shines on lead vocal on funky, Grip Your Soul. Her deep vocal attack, along with excellent guitar work by Fleischmann and screaming sax work by Aaron Dean make this one of my favorites on the release. Kat Riggins and Justin Johnson guest vocal with Coleman on The Hate with excellent deep vocal interplay and strong balance by Mongue on bass and Dean on sax. Wrapping the release is soulful, Been A Long Time Coming with excellent vocal lead by Coleman and a real nice bass line by Patriquin. Eric Gales steps in on lead guitar with Fleischmann and Mongue and vocal blending by Ed Moran, Chantell McFarland and Wanda Houston make this a strong closer.

Will James - Sundancer - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Sundancer, from Will James and it's a lively mix of contemporary blues, R&B and soul. Opening with Shadowman, with it's second line rhythm by Sergio Gonzalez, and Nathan Brown on bass, Will James has a silky smooth vocal style working his guitar with Jon Gilutin on keys. Solid opener. Soulful, Still Blue, has a really nice approach with smooth vocal over a pure melody, backed by Gilutin on keys and rhythm guitar by Randy Jacobs. Very nice. 6 Up is one of my favorites on the release with it's funky rhythm and guitar edge leading to a full out revival romp. Another funky blues track, Q Blues, really sets a nice groove and James on guitar plays nicely against Gonzalez, Brown and Gilutin. Wrapping the release is a dynamic rocker, Sundance with a touch of psychedelics, a driving beat and solid Hendrix like vocal and guitar expression. I think this release has a cool approach and definitely worth a listen (or more).

Junkyard Dog Productions artist: Jimmy Bennett - Sunday Morning Sessions - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Sunday Morning Sessions, by Jimmy Bennett and it's a solid set of acoustic country style blues. Opening with Easter Morning Melody, Jimmy Bennett, shows solid command of the Piedmont picking style and delivers this jaunty tune. Nice opener. Getting out the slide on his dobro, Bennett shows fluid technique and feel on Snow Sliding. Delbert McClinton's casual blues rocker, New York City features Bennett on vocal and guitar and John Ginty on keys. With a good melody, fluid guitar runs and some of Bennett's best vocals on the track this is a strong radio track. Playing Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire in up tempo fashion, Bennet gives it a different feel and is certain to draw crowd attention at shows. Wrapping the release is Serenade For New Orleans with a somber melody and Bennett accompanying himself on dobro. This is a solid release and one that his that right spot.

Little Village artist: Nic Clark - Everybody's Buddy - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Everybody's Buddy, by Nic Clark and it's strong. Opening with lazy shuffle, Laughing At The Rain, Nic Clark shows a warm voice, backing himself on dobro and accompanying himself on harmonica. Joined by Charlie Hunter on guitar and bass and George Sluppick on drums, this track has definite air potential. With an R&B feel, It'll Be Alright sounds like it's out of Sam Cooke's songbook. Harmonica, nicely phrased, warm vocal lead, Hunter's bass line and Sluppick with rimshots makes this a really nice track. Showing Jimmy Reed style on Don't Count Yourself Out, Clark's vocal and harmonica really solidify as the most focused up tempo blues track on the release with Hunter and Sluppick just adding the bottom for Clark's work. Very nice. My favorite track on the release, How I Met The Blues really is a showcase for Clark's vocal and harmonica work with some beautiful guitar chords by Hunter over his own bass line and the simple percussion of Sluppick. Strong. Title track, Everybody's Buddy, has an acoustic "country blues" feel with Clark on vocal and harmonica and nicely overlaid pedal steel work by DaShawn Hickman. Wrapping the release is folky, Breathe Slow with Clark on vocal and dobro and backing vocal by Wendy Hickman. Solid closer for a cool change of pace release.

VizzTone Label Group artist: Gaye Adegbalola - Satisfied - An Anthology - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Satisfied- An Anthology, by Gaye Adegbalola and it's packed full of tracks from 9 of her solo projects. The Dirty Dozens is a strong piano boogie with great vocals by Gaye and excellent piano by Jeff Covert. One of my favorites on the release is Tippin' On The Down Low with plenty of swing. Rodney Barnes adds great personality on piano giving it a terrific vintage feel. I really like Gaye's vocal work on Prove It On Me Blues. Her ability to dig in and deliver is well demonstrated, backed by Barnes on piano. Simple acoustic blues, Blues For The Greens starts off with Gaye alone with guitar but explodes with full support of Covert on keys, bass, drums and slide guitar. Sensitive, Winona, is a quiet blues featuring Gaye on vocal and guitar and Phil Wiggins on harmonica.  Wrapping the release is Lift Every Voice and Sing, in duet with Resa Gibbs. A solid closer for a lifetime of music.

Big Song Music artist: Lisa Biales - At Christmas - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, At Christmas, from Lisa Biales, and it's a solid mix of blues, pop and holiday sounds. Opening with title track, At Christmas, Lisa Biales leads the way on vocal with Tony Braunagel on drums, Jeff Paris on keys, Johnny Lee Schell on guitar, David J. Carpenter on bass, Jerry Vivino on sax, Maxayn Lewis on backing vocal, Mark Pender on trumpet and hot trombone work by Garrett Smith creating a cool second line feel. Shuffle, That's What I Like About Christmas, opens with a slick guitar intro by Schell. A snappy bottom by Braunagel, great vocals by Biales, swinging keys by Paris and a solid sax solo by Joe Sublett makes this a likely radio track. Mary's Little Baby Boy is my favorite track on the release with a distinct rock feel. Biales holds the reins tight and Braunagel's drum snap paired with Carpenter's bass line gives the track a Stones sound with high tension Hammond work by Paris and really cool slide guitar work by Schell. Excellent! Wrapping the release is bouncy, Christmas Cheer, with it's pop rocky feel. A definite radio track with Paris punching up the mix on keys and Schell accenting the mix with choice guitar work. Warm backing vocals by Lewis and a snappy drum rhythm by Braunagel makes this a solid closer.

VizzTone artist: Bob Corritore & Friends - High Rise Blues - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, High Rise Blues from Bob Corritore & Friends and I really like it. Opening with Last Time featuring Jimmy Rogers on vocal and guitar, this band is in the groove. With Chico Chism on drums, SE Willis on piano, Johnny Rapp on guitar, Bruce Lopez on bass and Bob Corritore on harmonica, this is a solid opener. Title track, High Rise Blues, features Chism on vocal and he does a great job.  Rapp is joined by Luther Tucker who rips some great guitar riffs backed by Gordo Moraga on bass and Chism on drums. Chicago blues, Honey Where You Going has a great feel with Corritore upfront on harmonica joined by Sam Lay on vocal and drums. Rapp and Chris James on guitar Patrick Rynn on bass round on this great track. Pinetop Perkins is featured on vocal and piano leading Grinder Man. His quiet yet firm vocal style provides great balance for his deliberate piano style and Corritore gets the harmonica humming on this one. With Brian Fahey on drums, Rynn on drums and James on guitar, it's a solid Pinetop track. Willie Big Eyes Smith  leads off on She's Alright, a Morganfield classic with Corritore punctuating the lead. Joined by Rapp on guitar, and Fuzz Jones on bass, classic Chicago. Shuffle, Sail A Ship features Eddie Clearwater on vocal and guitar with Chris James on guitar, Rynn on bass and Hiller on drums. Closing the set is Caught In The Act, with Lil Ed on guitar and lead vocal. Ed lays out some really nice guitar soloing, trading with Rapp, Corritore adds harmonica, all backed by Paul Thomas on bass, and Chism on drums. Strong closer.

Borealis Records artist: Michael Jerome Browne - Gettin' Together - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Gettin' Together, by Michael Jerome Browne and it's a full plate of authentic blues, performed as written. Opening with Mississippi John Hurt's, Monday Morning Blues, Michael Jerome Browne on vocal and 12 string shows a true understanding of the original music with his articulate picking pattern and vocals, joined by Harrison Kennedy on vocal and harmonica. Excellent opener. Delmore Brothers' I've Got The Big River Blues is a terrific track with MJB on guitar and Mary Flower on lap slide guitar. Really nice. Mississippi born Rube Lacy penned Ham Hound Crave and MJB and guitar wiz Colin Linden really bring this track to life. On Bukka White's (BB King's cousin, Booker T. Washington) Fixin' To Die Blues was reimagined as a mountain duet featuring MJB on vocal and gourd banjo and Teilhard Frost on fiddle. This is a great track and it's hard to imagine it any other way. Slow blues, Black Boy Shine's, Married Man Blues, has terrific vocal phrasing and 12 string by MJB, accompanied by Mary Flower on lap slide. Wrapping the release is Brownie McGhee's up tempo, Living With The Blues, with lively vocals and 12 string by MJB, joined by John Sebastian on harmonica, Happy Traum on lead guitar and John McColgan on washboard. This is a great closer, noted as learned from Penny Lang.

Jolani Music Group artist: Nalani Rothrock - The Rock House Sessions (extended cut) - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The Rock House Sessions (extended cut), from Nalani Rothrock and it's a blend of pop, rock and blues with a definite radio target. Opening with bluesy, Every Time I Close My Eyes, Nalani Rothrock shows her excellent vocal skills and smooth delivery. With Joshua Lamkin on guitar, Kevin McKendree on keys, Steve Mackey on bass, Kenneth Blevins on drums, and backing vocals by Nicole Boggs and Jonell Mosser. Excellent radio track. R&B flavored, Hold On, has a cool vamp and smooth backing behind Rothrock's vivid vocal delivery. Jackie Wilson adds warm backing vocals and McKendree and Lynn Williams firm up the track. Very nice.  Latin rhythm permeates Midnight, a real nice track with a sweet melody and a great showcase for Rothrock's vocal work. A cool stylistic Tex Mex guitar solo by Lamkin and percussion by Bryan Brock elevates this track and makes it another of my  favorites on the release. Lamkin pulls out the slide on Try, a New Orleans flavored blues with a lot of pop sauce. Rothrock just lights on the melody and her voice is perfect with just the right touch of backing guitar, keys and drums making this another really strong entry. Wrapping the release is Hey Little Bird, a light pop, country blues track with a sweet melody and easy guitar and drums back. Warm harmonies and rich lead makes this an excellent closer for a solid release.

Joe Krown - Tribute - New Release Review

 

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Tribute, from Joe Krown, and it's a New Orleans soaked release. Opening with Allen Toussaint's, All Of It, renown piano and B3 player player really gets things going, backed by  Mark Brooks on bass, Doug Belote on drums and with some searing guitar riffs by Leo Nocentelli. Powerful opener. Dr. John's Such A Night maintains all of the spirit of the Daytripper's original with Ivan Neville on lead vocal and Kassie Netherland backing, Jack Miele and John Fohl on guitar and of course Krown really  working the piano. On Ode to Mr. Davis, Krown lays back in the slot with cool piano and B3, joined by excellent sax work by Joe Sublett, Belote and Brooks. Very nice. Lightning Hopkins' Feel So Bad, features Wolfman Washington on vocal and guitar. I have always loved his style and his vocal, paired with his own funky guitar riffs makes this my favorite track on the release. wrapping the release is a stirring original, Gumbo Boogie, with Krown really cranking up the heat. With B3 under the bottom and piano on the top, a walking bass line by Brooks and a tight drums line by Belote, this is an excellent closer.

Walk That Walk - Big World of Trouble - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Big World of Trouble, by Walk That Walk, and it's a cool, modern mix of delta, boogie, and funky blues. Opening with Roof Got A Hole In It, Popa C. De Snyder on slide guitar and vocal harmonizes with Tim Gartland on harmonica and vocal. Backing vocal by Maria Tollefson and Jonathan Rossoff add richness to the mix.  A cool contemporary acoustic blues, a solid opener. On John Lee Hooker's classic, Boogie Chillen, Stickman Waldron on harmonica, Randi Laak on drums and Mike Barrows on bass really do a nice job with DeSnyder on lead vocal. His riffs on guitar have a modern sound but deeply rooted in Hooker's own riffs. Very cool. Poppa C has a deep vamp supported by Dirk van Gulden on bass and Laak on drums. Gartland on harmonica and DeSnyder on vocal and guitar really dig in on this one and Ted Hastings Armstrong adds keys that flesh the track out nicely. Muddy Waters' Still A Fool maintains all of the energy of the original with solid rhythm and harmonica. Wrapping the release is shuffle, Good Woman with  a driving bass line by Mike Barrows and Waldron on harmonica. Stinging guitar riffs and solid vocals by De Snyder are a good capper for this strong release.
