I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Spirit of 3, Spirit of 4, by Jon Menges and it's a set of solid straight up jazz. The title refers to the make up of musicians on the 2 different sets presented on the release. Opening with Anchor In The Path, Jon Menges plays a muted trumpet intro setting the theme. Pete McCann on guitar takes the melody expanding it with great finesse, supported by Evan Gregor on bass. Menges circles back on trumpet with a firm solo of his own, and Gregor on bass delivers a really nice bass solo giving the track a full plate. Very nice. Sweet swing in 3/4, Tree of Hope is smooth with a super bass line by Gregor and fluid trumpet lead by Menges and active rhythm guitar work by McCann. McCann takes the lead with warm chords and full bass lines by Gregor. On Coqui, Menges doubles up with Nathan Childers on tenor sax who plays a really nice improvised melody. Taking the lead back, Menges on trumpet gets a real nice bop going, backed by Joe Fitzgerald on bass (who also steps up for a nice solo) and Robert Weiss on drums. Fitzgerald on bass and Weiss on drums set a real nice groove and Menges slides right in with one of the best, melodic solos on the release. Childers follows with a strong tenor solo of his own really adding to the track and a hot bass lead by Fitzgerald brings the track up to the close. Wrapping the release is driving, Somethin' with Menges setting the pace. Childers on tenor hits it hard with a chunky solo of his own and Fitzgerald and Weiss each lay in just the right amount of spice to make this a tight closer.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, It Comes In Waves, from Denin Slage-Koch and its a nice blend of instrumental interpretations. Opening with title track, It Comes In Waves, Ryan Keberke on trombone, and Shane Endsley on trumped create a ccol blended intro. With Seth Lewis on bass and Bobby Wiens on drums, Denin Slage-Koch lays down a sumptuous melody on guitar followed by a knockout trombone solo by Keberle, floating on a bed of keys by Gavin Allen-Dunn. Very cool. On One For Honey, Slage-Koch kicks up the tempo with fluid finger work over Lewis and Wiens keeping a tight bottom and a fluid piano jaunt by Allen-Dunn really hits the spot. Continue really gets going with a driving rhythm by Lewis and Wiens. Endsley on trumpet and flugelhorn and Keberle on trombone set the stage and Slage-Kock solos aggressively over the rabid bass line of Lewis and Keberle adds some really nice trombone lines and Allen-Dunn's keyboard work is well formed and fluid making this one of my favorite tracks on the release. With a bluesy rock feel, Slage-Koch shows a totally different side on Signal Fires with a long, Gilmore inspired solo, pushed ever higher by Allen-Dunn's full load organ work and the bottom by Lewis and Wiens. Very cool. Wrapping the release is Quiet Year, an interesting track with Slage-Koch and Lewis each taking beautiful solos over a subtle background. This is a solid closer for an enjoyable release.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Songs of Beauty for Ashes of Realization and it's another solid set from Reverend Freakchild. Opening with swamp funky, All I Got Is Now, the Rev on lead vocal and National Resolectric guitar, sets a terrific feel. Joined by Hugh Pool on lap steel and backing vocals, Brennen Schedler on drums, Steve Sirockin on organ and Chris Parker on drums, this is a great opener. High energy rocker, All Across America, has a driving bottom courtesy Jon Robinson on bass and Patrick Carmichael on drums, with Sirockin riding high on organ. Rev drives the track with potent vocals and harmonica, complimented by Drew Glackin on lap steel. The Rev takes to an acoustic track on Amsterdam Blues which finds him showcasing his acoustic slide prowess in compliment to his vocals. Wrapping the release is laid back blues rocker, Keep On Truckin' with it's distinctive, Grateful Dead rhythm but original sound. With the Rev on lead vocal, guitar and uke, Hugh pool on harmonica, vocals and bass, John Ragusa on backing vocals, Sirockin on organ and Chris Parker, this is a cool contemporary closer.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Six, from The Bluesland Horn and it's a cool, funky blues jam. Opening with lazy shuffle, My Old Truck, Marty Cochrane leads on vocal, backed with a full horn compliment including Miguelito Valdez and Doug Zacharias on trumpet, Barrie Sorenson on tenor sax, Armando Alvarez on bari sax, Tim Keels on tuba and with Casey Ryder on bass, Jan Randle on piano, Ross Hall on drums and Terry Medd on acoustic guitar and dobro. Cool opener. Shuffle In The Attic has a Freddy King feel with Medd laying in some real nice guitar riffs and Alvarez on bari holds the bottom tight. I really like rocker, Rock My Roll with it's swagger. Featuring some real nice guitar work by Medd and a strong sax solo by Jerry Cook, this track has attitude. Alley Shuffle again finds Medd up front with a taste of T Bone Walker but with the punchy horn section of Doug Zacharias, John Reid and Paul Evans and with Guy Plecash on piano and Gavin Sorochan on drums. Wrapping the release is So Long, Goodbye with Jack Lavin on vocal, harp and bass. I really like Lavin's harp tone which adds great texture to the track. A solid shuffle featuring Medd on slide, Miles Jackson on organ and Ross Hall on drums, this is a solid closer.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Islands, by Dan Bonsanti and The 14 Jazz Orchestra and it's strong. Opening with Tyner's Man From Tanganyika, Peter Erskine on drums and Dennis Marks on bass set the pace. Ed Maina on flute (solo), and alto sax, Peter Brewer on tenor sax, flute and clarinet, Ed Calle on tenor sax (solo) and flutes, Mike Brignola on Bari sax, flutes and bass clarinet, set the melody and Mike Levine takes the first solo on piano. Brett Murphy, Jason Carder and John Lovell on trumpet and Dan Teboe, Dante Luciani (solo), Major Bailey (bass) and Dan Bonsanti (including tuba emulation) on trombone really swing. with excellent solos. Really nice opener. With plenty of punch, Corea's, Bud Powell, really excels with the front line of brass and Maina blows a great alto solo, Carder on trumpet and Levine on piano solo nicely as well, joined by Mike Harvey on drums, Lindsey Blair on guitar, and Jamie Ousley on bass. Levin original Carmencita has a great Latin rhythm fueled by Lee Levin on drums, Richard Bravo on percussion and Nicky Orta on bass. Ed Calle again really goes the extra mile on soprano sax supercharging the track and Levine's own piano so gives the track tremendous integral body. Excellent! Will Lee steps in on bass (solo) on Levin penned, Jaco. With a flowing melody and muted brass, Calle gets a nice opportunity to open up with a soulful tenor solo. Wrapping the release is Newman's, When She Loved Me, from Toy Story. Calle softy presents the melody on tenor sax and Mark Egan has a nice fretless bass solo, nicely complemented by Randy Bernsen on acoustic guitar. Nice closer for a really enjoyable release.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Wooden Music, from Mick Kolassa and it's chocked full of of blues talent. Opening with shuffle, Educated By The Blues, Mick Kolassa on vocal and guitar lays down a cool melody, with Doug MacLeod and Jeff Jensen on guitar, Carl Casperson on bass, Tom Lonardo on drums, Rick Steff on piano and featuring Eric Hughes on harmonica. Up-tempo, If I Told You, has a swampy rhythm with Jensen on guitar, Casperson on bass, Lonardo on drums and Vince Johnson on harmonica. Very nice. Over My Shoulder is a cool little tune with a saunter. With solid vocals by Kolassa and tight guitar melody by Jensen, this track has a great feel. Wrapping the release is country flavored, Gas Station Sushi, with Kolassa on vocal, kazoo and guitar, with straight up slide from Jensen and Lonardo on drums. This is a cool closer for a characteristic Kolassa release.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Live, from Raphael Wressnig & Igor Prado and it's hot! Opening with funky, Bill Withers' Kissing My Love, Raphael Wressnig on Hammond and Igor Prado on guitar set up an excellent jam. Wressnig lays down the melody, backed by Yuri Prado on drums and Igor picks up the melody making this a great opening groove. Wressnig has the mic on Born To Roam with full Hammond backing and Igor's phrasing on solo guitar kicks it up to overdrive. Very cool. Crossfire is an excellent guitar fueled blues jam featuring some of Prado's best chops on the release. Wressnig pushes the heat on organ, making this one of my favorite tracks on the set. Igor gets his shot on the mic on Snooks Eaglin's, swampy, Drive It Home. With New Orleans style he rips some great riffs and Wressnig cements the groove. Bobby Blue Bland's Ain't No Love (In The Heart of the City) is a real nice change up with it's slinky feel, led by Wressnig on Hammond. Igor digs deep for some really soulful riffs on guitar giving the track real balance between the instrumentalists. Very nice. Wrapping the release is Prado's original boogie, Faceslap Swing No.5 when this band really soars. With Yuri driving the beat on drums, Igor and Wressnig go full tilt making this a terrific closer for a really cool release.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, New Southern, from Justin Cody Fox and it's strong set of well written rock and radio tracks. Opening with Living Ghosts, Justin Cody Fox sets a solid rocking opener on guitar and vocal. Backed by Fred Eltringham and Seth Aldridge on drums, David Morse and Robert Kearns on bass, Jen Gunderman and Rhett Huffman on keys and Tarsha Murphy on backing vocals. Bluesy ballad, Take Me Home Virginia, has a great melody and shows strong radio appeal. Show Me Your Light really kicks it with a driving drum beat and piano. The vocal is perfect for radio and with it's super hook. My choice for top radio track. My favorite track on the release is heavy footed Walking These Blues, with just the right tempo and a rock guitar riffs. Fox's vocals are super with full vocal backing by Murphy and the track is full of attitude. Very cool. Wrapping the release is rural Old Man Rest, a simple ballad duet between Fox and Murphy over acoustic guitar. This is a solid closer for a solid release.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The Franklin Sessions, from Mike Guldin and Rollin' and Tumblin' and it's a solid set of contemporary blues. Opening with The Franklin Shuffle, Mike Guldin leads the way on vocal and guitar, backed by Yates McKendree on drums, James Pennebaker on guitar, and David Santos on bass. With a nice guitar lope and sparkling piano work by Kevin, this track cuts a nice groove. With a nice soulful feel, The Right Thing finds The McCrary Sisters backing Guldin on vocals, Kevin on organ, Yates adding some real nice lap steel, Bill Sharrow on bass, Tim Hooper on piano and Billy Wear on drums. Very cool. Yates really shines on guitar on Blow Wind Blow with a super bass groove by Sharrow, and Wear on drums. Guldin on lead vocal and Kevin really getting the organ going makes this one of my favorites on the release. Smokin' Woman has a deep groove with Sharrow leading the way on bass. Guldin's vocals have just the right feel Tim Hooper really pumps the organ and Guldin's guitar solo adds a real swing. R&B track, Two Hearts, sets up a real nice vocal duet between Guldin and Su Tears and The Philadelphia Funk Authority Horns (Dale Gerheart on trombone, Kyle Hummel on bari sax, Neil Wetzel on tenor and Andrew Kowal on trumpet) really add punch. Wrapping the release is Diving Duck Blues with a romping bass line by Sharrow. I think that Guldin's vocals on this track are my favorites on the release and with Hooper on organ and Kevin on piano there is a great foundation for Mikey Junior to solo on harmonica. Wear on drums keeps a tight ship and Guldin's own gritty guitar work is perfect for this solid closer.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Crusin' Kansas City, from Mike Bourne Band and it's straight up rockin' blues. Opening with laid back title track, Crusin' Kansas City with my man Johnny Burgin on guitar with Mike Bourne, Patrick Recob on bass, and Dave Creighton on organ. Cool opener. Swing track, Lose Your Rings, Keep Your Fingers features Bourne on lead vocal and beefy organ work by Creighton. Burgin steps up with his hot, stylistic guitar soloing giving the track real sting. Morganfield sound permeates, Hollow Man with John Paul Drum on harmonica and Bourne on vocal. Adam Hagerman on on drums and Recob on bass keep the bottom tight and understated slide work adds nicely to the set. Loose With The Truth is absolutely my favorite track on the release with real nice vocal work by Bourne, a featured trumpet solo by Greg Hopkins a cool sax solo and Johnny Burgin loose with some of the signature, blistering guitar work that makes him one of my contemporary favorites. Sam Treinen blows some righteous R&B style sax on The One and Burgin really digs in deep with a rich solo of his own giving Bourne a strong platform for his soulful vocals. Dangerous Game is another of my favorites with it's swampy indie rocker feel. I really like how the track just lays in it's discolored groove and Bourne rides high on his vocal style. Burgin again steps in with reckless abandon on guitar and this is really something that he shines at. Great contrast for the release. Wrapping the release is slow blues, Kansas City Grease, featuring Johnny Iguana on delicious piano, Big D Ericson on lush harmonica, solid guitar work from Bourne, Rob Lorenz on drums and Mike Grinns on bass. This is a strong closer for a real entertaining release.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Generations of Blues: West Side Legacy, from Larry Taylor and the Taylor Family and it's strong. Opening with She Treat Me Just The Same, Larry Taylor on lead vocal and drums leads the way. With a bluesy R&B feel, he sets a solid drum line, joined by Joe B. Brinson on guitar, Abraham Avery on bass, Barrelhouse Bonni on keys and hot sax work by Ronnie G. Solid opener. Demetria Taylor steps up to the mic on Bad Girl, a nice shuffle and she's the perfect leader for this track. Her vocals are sassy and tight, backed by Eddie Taylor Jr on guitar and Ronnie G. on sax and Duke Harris on keys. Brenda Taylor is featured on lead vocal on I Found Out with Jerry-O Mansfield on guitar and Ronnie G on sax. This is a strong track with a great balance between Brenda and Ronnie. Demetria is back up front on funky, You Belong To Me. This is one of my favorite tracks on the release with a hot sax solo by Ronnie G. I Paid My Dues is another track featuring Larry upfront on vocal and his style and presence carries this track nicely with an almost Albert King like feel. With wailing sax work by Ronnie, solid piano by Bonni and Brinson on guitar, this track is another showpiece. Wrapping the release is slower blues, Larry and Eddie Jr. Groove (Blues In The Rain), Eddie Jr. has the guitar lead with Matthew Skoller on harmonica. Larry keeps the bottom tight on drums with Michael Sleepy Riley on bass. This is a solid release packed with talent.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Nosy Neighbors, from Paul Boddy & The Slidewinder Blues Band, and it's a cool, straightforward contemporary blues band. Opening with easy shuffle, Trouble Finds Me Everyday, Paul Boddy on lead vocal and guitar sets a solid platform, joined by Glenn Halo on keys, Chuck Hearne on bass and Dave Hollingsworth on drums. Another shuffle, Hanky Panky Blues has a real nice sway with a strong piano solo by Hale and excellent vocal by Boddy who adds some real nice slide. With it's cool Latin beat, title track, Nosy Neighbors, has strong radio appeal with a great melody, hot drum rhythm and real nice slide work by Boddy. Right Way Up is a real nice blues rocker with nice finger work by Boddy, a driving bass line by Hearne and strong backing vocals. Wrapping the release is Trash Can Head, a laid back bluesy rocker with super jammy piano by Hale, and a cool bass line by Hearne. Backing vocals aren't listed on the album, but I do think that they add nicely to Boody's smooth slide work. Solid closer.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Ridin' The Blinds, from Hudspeth and Taylor and it's an excellent new interpretation of early Mississippi Delta Blues. Opening with Poor Boy Long Ways from Home Jaisson Taylor on vocal and percussion and Brandon Hudspeth on guitar take this traditional tune and retain the best of it's vintage sound with modern style. Taylor has a strong voice and Hudspeth's slide work is solid. Nice opener. Otto Virgial's Little Girl In Rome has great energy with electrifying slide work by Hudspeth. One of my favorite tracks on the release is Willie Borum's Lonesome Home Blues with excellent vocal power by Taylor and driving guitar work by Hudspeth. Excellent. Waters' I Can't Be Satisfied kicks the set into up tempo mode and the duo is really jamming. With Morganfield trademark slide styling and super vocals, this is a great track. Wrapping the release is Big Bill Broonzy's Hey Hey with it's country style finger picking styling by Hudspeth. A casual but solid closer for a cool release.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Six Strings of Steel by Duke Robillard an it's terrific. Opening with Barney Kessel's Git With It!, Duke Robillard hits the ground running. This is a great tune and Robillard knows how to sell it. Joined by Marty Ballou on bass, Mark Teiseira on drums and with an outstanding solo by Doug James on sax, this is an excellent opener. On, Shame, Shame, Shame, Robillard really gets things rockin. Chris Cote does a great job on vocal and another outstanding solo by James and of course strong guitar work by Duke. Chuck Willis' Love Struck is deep in soul and Cote does an excellent job. Warm organ work by Bruce Bears paves the way for exceptional guitar phrasing by Robillard making this one of my favorite tracks on the release. Leo Parker's Billy In The Lion's Den is an excellent showcase for James and he really does shine. Robillard springboards from the deep throaty work of James with his own light fingered attack, then trading solid riffs making this another exceptional track on the release. Lowell Fulson's Lovin' You fits nicely into this set with it's R&B feel and with James and Bears holding the line for Cote on vocal and nicely stylized guitar lead by Robillard, a strong addition to the set. Wrapping the release is Link Wray's Rumble. Nothing has the grit of Wray's classic, and that reverb saturation is so time perfect. Robillard really works it making it a perfect closer for one of his best releases in years.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Painting Stars, from The LH Express (formerly The Lucas Haneman Express) and it's energetic. Opening with Getaway, with it's country rock feel, shows Lucas Haneman up front on vocal and guitar with Megan Laurence on vocal, and Martin Newman on bass and Valera Negovora on drums and percussion. Powerful vocal duet really gives this track a nice push and Negovora's potent drumming really kicks it up a notch. Bluesy, Being Strong, features Laurence with rich vocal lead and one of the most powerful tracks on the release. A cool, rock bottom and firm bass by Newman makes this one of my favorite tracks on the release and Haneman steps up with a particularly soulful guitar solo. Very nice. Funky rocker, When I'm With Her, has a strong guitar riff and Haneman and Laurence's interplay vocally makes this my choice for radio track. Very cool. Rising From The Dead digs deeper into blues rock with a lightly salted back beat. Haneman's lead vocals are great and I really like the boost by Newman with the tight drum work of Negovora. This is another track with a strong melody and real radio potential. Wrapping the release is title track, Painting Stars, with light percussion and bass under Laurence's lead vocal and Haneman on slide. A country rock beat and a solid melody, is a fitting closer to this solid release.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Anahata, from Michael Franklin and Timothy Franklin and there's some cool music on this release. Opening with horn unfused, Shinkansen, Timothy Franklin lays down a relentless bass line and Michael Franklin on keys alternates with him taking turns on lead, all backed by the Tower of Power horns (Emilio Castillo on Alto sax, Stephen Kupka on bari sax, Adolfo Acosta on trumpet, Tom E Politer on tenor sax, Sal Cracchiolo on trumpet) Marc Clement Jr on drums and Steady Joseph on percussion. Excellent opener. Ave For Josephne has a strong melody featuring lead bass by Tim, Larry Coryell on acoustic guitar, Olga Kopakova on violin, Michael on grand piano and Paul Fluery on cello. Very nice. Maynardvishnu is an aggressive track with Blilly Cobham leading the way on drums. With Donnie Rogozinski really hammering the trumpet, and an excellent guitar solo by Tommy Carlton, this track will make you sit up and take notice. Strong solos by Danny Jordan on Tenor sax, Charlie DeChant on bari sax and of course powerful keys by Michael and Tim on bass, another exceptional track. Wrapping the release is Pavanne for Deborah Ann, a quiet stack with soft keyboard melody by Michael and lead bass by Tim. This track is really nicely done and a strong closer for a totally enjoyable release.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Vol. 12, from Andres Roots and it's a solid acoustic blues release. Opening with So It Is, Subhuti, Roots plays a solid, resonator with slide tune and a solid opener. Dromedary is a cool. finger picked acoustic track with a strong melody and rhythm. Roots has a great sense of blues as it fits in todays world. Another favorite on the release is Picnic at Dockery's with a claw like picking style and super slide accents. Years Past Midnight is a cool rout with country blues style picking, again accented with fat slide work by Roots. Wrapping the release is Sherwood with rhythmic strumming setting a firm foundation for Roots' melodic slide work. This is a cool release featuring a full load of blues approaches.
