| The Path to Freedom....... Aloha.....from the beaches of Maui. I know what you're thinking....most of you anyways. It's freezing cold...ice, snow and frigid temps.....gee thanks, Vanessa. Well, I'd apologize but I just cannot bring myself to say that I am sorry that our workshops are going great and yes, the weather has been picture perfect. We sure picked a great one this year. Blue skies, whales breaching from sun up to sun down and beautiful surf aside, the classes and the students are all that we'd hoped they would be. For those of you that managed to sneak away from your lives to join us....a big, big thank you. Jorma took a big gamble on this trip and decided to teach his first ever song writing workshop. Based on the premise that all of us have songs trapped within us waiting to come out. His mission is to help each student find the way to liberate these messages and to learn to express him or herself freely from the heart. I have known Jorma for over 23 years and there were many years where his own words were trapped and he could not find the path to free them into songs. I couldn't understand it.....then. I mean he wrote 3rd Week in the Chelsea, Genesis, New Song for the Morning, Been So Long and countless other heartfelt songs. But years later I look back and know why it was so hard. For him...it was about the way he was living his life. It's not always that way for songwriters. Some songwriters write their best material when times are tough. Without reading too much into it and telling his story....Jorma was experiencing a writers block. It | Whale Tail! (black speck in middle) | wasn't until he unearthed the things in his life that had kept him from being truly free from his bondage of self, that he was free to write again. We are in the perfect place to help set someone else's words free. We'll be leaving this week...back to the mainland, back to the cold, back to the beauty of home. Stay warm everyone. We'll be seeing you soon........ Vanessa |
| Pete Huttlinger Returns to Fur Peace!
As many of you are aware, Pete Huttlinger had to cancel his workshops with us last year, as well as his touring schedule, due to a major health problem. We are pleased to announce that Pete is back on his feet again, and even training to walk a half-marathon!
He reached out to us a week or two ago to thank Fur Peace and all of our students for their donations and well wishes and to let us know that he is back playing again and would be interested in returning to Fur Peace next year. (Pete, you see, understands that we begin booking the following season in the spring time).
An unfortunate turn of events occurred and Bill Payne needed to cancel his workshop . . . so Hurl said, it may be late notice, but we just received a nice letter from Pete, let's see if he would make his return to the Ranch now instead of later. Success!
Pete will be making his return to the Ranch to teach an Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar Workshop (level 2/3) on March 30 - April 02, 2012. Join us as we welcome Pete back to the fold!

Clive Carroll makes his first visit to the Ranch to lead a workshop on Composition and Arrangement For Solo Guitar April 27-30th. This workshop is for everyone who is interested in creating pieces and arrangements for solo guitar. Clive will be demonstrating various techniques and compositional devices, which can help the metamorphosis from an initial idea into a complete work. The sessions may be approached from a wide variety of genres including, traditional styles from the British Isles, swing, 'classical' works and music from the 60's to the present day. Coupled with the group sessions, Clive will also be working with each student individually, as this will allow time to focus on very specific areas such as personal style, melodic & harmonic structure and voice independence.
He was recently described as "probably the best and most original young acoustic guitar player and composer in Britain" by Acoustic Guitar Magazine. The music press describes him as an 'Incredible acoustic talent' and 'Peerless - no other word for it...' Born into a musical family at the height of the 1970s, Clive's musical career really began at the age of two, when his father presented him with a homemade banjo, he got his first guitar at the age of 9. It wasn't very long before he was playing regularly with the family band. At this early age Clive was exposed to a variety of music - everything from traditional Irish to rock, pop and soul. Clive later enrolled in London's prestigious Trinity College to study composition and guitar, graduating in 1998 with a First Class Honours Degree. However, all the time he was playing the works of Bach, Dowland and Albeniz clutching a nylon string classical guitar, the lure of the steel string instrument was working its charm. Soon after graduation, Clive was given the opportunity to play at a gig with UK guitar maestro John Renbourn (of Pentangle), who, on hearing him play, immediately suggested that Clive record an album. The album's 2000 release didn't go unnoticed by mentor and friend John Renbourn, either, because the pair spent the next two years on tour together in Europe and the United States. Clive relates that he "learned the subtleties of working as a soloist and the importance of changing the music every night to keep it fresh." His next solo album, 'The Red Guitar' appeared in 2004 and this time it was guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel's turn to invite Clive to tour with him. "Tommy is an amazing performer, and when you're learning how to deliver a solo show, there's no better teacher." After years of traveling with guitar giants Renbourn and Emmanuel, it was time to go solo and so in 2006 Clive embarked on a series of tours under his own name, accepting an invitation to appear at the highly-regarded International Guitar Night of America along the way. Clive will be making his debut at Fur Peace April 27-30, 2102 ENROLL NOW! Clive will also be performing in the Fur Peace Station Concert Hall on April 28 as part of the Guitar Masters Show with Laurence Juber, and Frank Vignola with Vinny Raniolo. | FUR PEACE RANCH ON-THE-ROAD AT WANEE FESTIVAL 2012!
