Friends,
fans, and blues lovers —
I'm particularly proud to introduce you to Gracie Curran and
her band! I had the distinct pleasure of working with Gracie on this debut
release, of witnessing her growth and emergence as a powerful and unique
vocalist and songwriter, and feeling the tremendous positive spirit and deep
soulfulness she brings to the music.
We began the sessions by having Gracie sing along with the band in a sort of
makeshift isolation booth in the corner of my little studio, but that just
didn't work — before long we were recording her live with the band, singing and
dancing in the middle of the room, hand-holding a big RE20 microphone (about the
size of a large can of Foster's beer, and the weight of a medium-sized salami)
and infusing the band and the songs with her remarkable energy.
From the beginning Gracie was set on creating a big sound, augmenting her tight
quartet — Gracie, Tom Carrol (guitar), Geoff
Murfitt (bass) and Derek John Bergman (drums) — with
Bruce Bears (Duke Robillard Band) on keyboards and Roomful's
Mark Earley (sax) and Doug Woolverton
(trumpet) on horns. The moment the band kicks in on the opening track, "Even
With the Rain," it's obvious this is a absolute powerhouse of an album. She
even let me blow some over-the-top harmonica on her grinding slow blues "Been
All Over," which was a real treat.

“Their
debut album, Proof of Love, tears open your chest and breathes into your soul
with a baptism of raw power and emotion. A five-alarm stew of blues, gospel and
soul that burns in your gut like the first time you heard Aretha Franklin's "I
Never Loved a Man." Pass the cool water, please."

“Occasionally
a vocalist comes along with such a presence that they command everyone’s
undivided attention. Such is the case with Boston’s Gracie Curran. There is
nothing subtle in her booming big mama voice. Her band and the addition of a
horn section match the soulful energy of her voice, hanging in and driving her
along on their musical excursion. Elements of soul, blues, gospel and funk
coalesce to create a moving and heartfelt experience that should no doubt lead
to a successful and ever-growing career. All the pieces fit; well-crafted
band-originals, razor-sharp production and skilled musicianship all giving a
rock-solid foundation to the powerhouse that is Gracie Curran. Talent as seen
here deserves to be heard. With the right exposure this band should have no
trouble in attaining the success that they truly deserve. "
